How to choose a university? Question: I have applied to 4 universities, specifically Indiana University - Bloomington, University of Wisconsin - Madison, University of Illinois at Chicago, and DePaul University at Chicago. I am planning to pursue a Business degree concentrating on Corporate Finance and Economics.
I have a few questions here:
1. How can I choose a distinctive university among all those?
2. Do I have to consider rankings?
Indiana's Kelley School of Business is ranked very highly for its Finance program, same goes to Wisconsin but not so on Illinois Chicago and DePaul.
3. Do I have to consider job/internship opportunities?
4. If so, will Chicago provide an easier access to this?
5. Would you go for big campus with nice college town or small campus located in the city?
Please help me, I'm confused.
I can be contacted directly via email at kellyn_tan@hotmail.com
Thank you.
I have difficulties on choosing a university at the midwest region. Please help me, thank you! =)
Which would you choose?
Indiana-Bloomington, Illinois-Chicago, Wisconsin-Madison or Depaul??
Answer:
First of all, why UIC and not Illinois? It's not the same caliber as the other schools. Champaign is the main campus, not UIC, and has an EXCELLENT business school with plenty of career opportunities in Chicago for business and non-business majors alike.
Second, DePaul has highly regarded MBA programs... but not so much for their undergrad degrees.
As for Madison - solid state school. On par with Illinois (Champaign, once again, not UIC). If you live in Wisconsin, I would not hesitate to go there over the others for the savings in tuition dollars.
Indiana's business school is one of the best in the country. However, if you decide to switch majors outside of the business school, few programs have much of an academic reputations (business and music and Library sciences are world renown... rest of the campus lags in undergraduate education). Something to keep in mind, as Economics is a liberal arts major, and a weak liberal arts degree may not be the best compliment to strong finance program. If you live in Indiana, I'd take the in-state tuition there.
If you do not live in Wisconsin or Indiana... what is your flagship state school, and why didn't you apply there? Simple cost-benefit analysis of in-state tuition vs. out-of-state will tell you that this is the way to go. All major research schools will have internship and job opportunities, even if located in the middle of nowhere. Plus... are you really that worried about this NOW? Are you just going to college to get a job, or would you actually like to LEARN something about finance, economics, and yourself? If it is the first, then head to a smaller liberal arts college with a business certificate program because you are going to be one boring interview prospect without more life experience. Otherwise, visit these 4 campuses and see which one feels right.

PO1414 2000 Ford Taurus check engine Question? Question: I have a 2000 Ford Taurus with a check engine light. I am going on a trip from Madison, Wisconsin to Bloomington , Minnesota. Took it to go see what was the light on for, and it came up with code 1414 (po 1414), which means it is something to do with the electric air pump. How much would it take to repair it, or will I be able to make it to and back from Minnesota?
Answer:
This takes the place of the belt driven air pump. It blows fresh air in the exhaust to reduce hydrocarbons and increase catalyst efficiency. I'd drive it with out worrying. On the Taurus SHO it is located behind the front bumper

Which universities are best for me to learn media and jounalism and sociology? Question: I am a second year university student from japan. I will go to US to study as an exchange student. I am interested in media and jounalism and sociology(political science). I can't decide which universites are best for me. These universites are the list of it.
Answer:
My niece is in college for journalism, wanting to become a television reporter. She did a lot of research on good schools. She told me that the best one in the Mid-West where it looks like you are concentrating was Northwestern University in Evanston IL - that indeed it was one of the top schools for that in the nation. It's also hard to get into. She is going to another one of the top schools for journalism but it's in Syracuse NY.
If you want a well-rounded education with a school with a good reputation, using one of the "Big 10" schools is usually a good idea - and you've listed Purdue, Wisconsin, U of Iowa and Indiana U.

Will an 85 % average get me into these colleges? Question: along with other admission criterias of course. My school offers very few AP courses, one or two I believe? One of which I'm planning to take in grade 12.
I'm a CAN resident(Ontario), US citizen by the way.
Here are some schools that I'm interested in:
UNC Chapel Hill
U of Penn
Penn State U – U Park
UC Berkeley
U of Michigan – Ann Arbor
Indiana U – Bloomington
U of Wisconsin – Madison
Ohio State U – Athens
U of Virginia
Thanks for your input!
Thanks! Those were both great feedbacks!! i'm going to work really hard to keep those grades up..
Answer:
Well you have a full range of universities there, some willing to take grades far worse than yours. An 85% is above average but US Universities look at more than just your GPA.
It's a whole person concept. Your grades and your rank at school play a part. SAT scores play a part. Whether your parents attended college plays a part (there is a correlation with the mother with a college degree and her children successfully completing college). It depends on the college.
Extracurricular, essay, etc also play a part.
The right combination of the above can get you into a good university WITHOUT a good GPA although a GPA definitely helps. GPA doesn't matter as much as most people think because it's hard to tell how well your school grades so the best way to compare student's abilities are with standardized test scores and the activities he/she participates in.

Amplified indoor tv antennas stink! Why is there not much improved indoor tv antennas? ? Question: I am a proud owner of 2 ZenithDTT901 digital tv converter boxes. I have returned antennas for a refund of my money back 5 times now. My best results are with cheap $5 to $15 antennas. My best antennas have been home-made using a coax cable in the Zenith box, split using aligator clips to shielded copper wire attached to metal of some various shapes. A "U" shape is good, but needs to be rotated to receive Wisconsin, Rockford IL, Bloomington IL, South Bend IN, or Lower Michigan southwest of Midway Airport where I'm located. From my experience, many antennas amplified drown out these far away signals and are poor for local stations. Why is there not a good non-directional, non-amplified indoor TV antennas on the market? I've tried many. Two "U-shaped" coat hangers pick up all the far away stations I need, and the sound and picture quality is better than any cable signal I EVER had. But why do manufacturers not consider "long-distance" reception non-amplified? Wire and various metal shaped in various shapes can pull in stations at least 75 miles to 150 away for me.Has anyone else besides me experimented with home-made INDOOR TV antennas and recieved stations several states away, like I am getting?(Due to atmospheric conditions, clouds, precipitation, signals vary.)

What college should I go? options are IU, U-Illinois,and U-WIS.? Question: I've got accepted in Indiana University-Bloomington, University of Illinois-Champaign, University of Wisconsin-Madison. And I'm on the waiting list in University of Michigan- Ann Arbor.
Michigan is my first choice but if I don't get into that school where should I go?
Give me every information about those colleges.( good and bad both.)
I'm Asian and wanna go for Business major.
Answer:
Indiana and Illinois both have EXCELLENT business schools. Wisconsin also has a good academic reputation, and if you take advantage of the opportunities offered, it will be a good experience as well.
If you are not completely sure about business, then skip Indiana. It has a terrible academic reputation outside of the business and music schools for undergraduate education. If you find yourself wishing to become a engineer instead, you will have to transfer to Purdue... or Illinois or Wisconsin. U of I and UW both offer a full slate of majors, whereas IUB splits academic duties with Purdue in the state. However, if you plan to attend college to learn how to take your idea for a business into the real world, then the Kelley school will offer the best Entrepreneurship major. They also tend to insulate the business majors at Bloomington so that they do not associate with undergrads of the other schools, and have their own clubs and organizations to provide leadership roles without larger campus contact.
This is in stark contrast to Illinois' College of Business (no longer the College of Commerce... aw). Illinois has more of a focus on having students take classes from multiple colleges and contributing to the campus first, college second. As a result, there is more pressure to become a President or Treasurer of a campus wide organization, fraternity, or sorority. Not sure if this is your cup of tea, but know that this is out there. Great business school - #1 school in the country for Accounting (in the top 5 programs every year over the last 5 years). Bar entrance age is 19 in Champaign, and it's an easy drive, train ride, or bus ride to Chicago.
Wisconsin is also a great school. Bascom Hill might be a scary, slippery sight in winter, but Madison is a great town. I don't think anyone cares what the bar entrance age is there - this is Wisconsin. Great school, great academics, plenty to do, but you will be surrounded by cheeseheads.
Michigan is overpriced if you plan on attending from out of state. You might as well go to a private school for the amount of money you dish out.
My advice... if one of these schools is in-state, then go there. You have the possibility of a great experience at all three (or four), so it is not worth the out of state tuition to attend one of the others. (Unless, you live in Urbana - everyone deserves the right to attend college away from home.) You seem to be down to 3 choices, so go to each of those three campuses, and really figure out if you can see yourself there. It's only seven hours from Madison to Bloomington via C-U.

Can i get into these schools? please help? Question: I am a junior soon to be senior in highschool. I have a 3.2 GPA and i got a 27 on the ACT, i hope to get one or 2 points higher on it. I have been a member of my school newspaper for 4 years and next year will hold the position of Associate Editor in Chief. I also have taken many honors/Ap classes, by the end of highschool i will have taken 6 AP classes.
What are my chances of getting into the following universities.
1st choice. Penn State
2nd choice. Boston University
3rd choice.Wisconsin-Madison
4th choice.Indiana University-Bloomington
5th choice,University of Illinois
6th choice. Syracuse
7th choice Marquette
8th choice university of Iowa
9th choice Purdue
Please help me out!
Answer:
Penn State- ACT is good enough, GPA may be low. Pretty okay chance
Boston University- I would think so, but some people get surprising rejections from BU.
Wisconsin-If your instate you have a decent chance, out of state it would be tough
Indiana-Good chance
Illinois- same as Wisconsin
Syracuse-I don't know anything about syracuse so I couldn't tell you
Marquette- Very good chance
Iowa- Very good chance
Purdue- Very good chance
I gotta tell you though, it would be better to ask your college counselor--you shouldn't depend on others opinions too much, since college admissions advisors get way more info about you than your sending out in things like this, so they'll have a slightly different perspective. You don't want a pessimist to stop you from applying somewhere you should or an optimist to get your hopes up.
Good luck!

Good story or bad? Question: Age 22. A little old to have never kissed a girl before? Yeah i would say so. I have always been really shy with the ladies. Even though I am extremely good looking for weighing 270 pounds. Hah, not! I'm as ugly as they come, nicknamed Shamu second grade.
My first date had just ended and now I was standing outside with the most amazing girl ever. Wait a minute, let's rewind a bit so you know how I even got here.
< < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < <
I spent 21 years trying to get a girl in person. Sadly it never happened. I'm pretty sure what turned them off was that I was overpoweringly sexy with a combination of smooth moves and irresistible charm. It was too much for them to handle. Yeah, right. Like that would ever happen in the next billion years. I am extremely shy and just so, fat. I wanted to be with someone though, more than anything. I wanted to feel a warm body next to me, to give her gifts, and have long talks abouts everything. I didn't need a "hott" girl, just someone who didn't care about looks along with a great personality.
On line dating. I had been talking to a girl I could tell anything to on line for about three months. I told her my weight, about how I have been teased my whole life, and how I am extremely shy. She was okay with this because she too was not what you would call a mega-fine lady. Her problem was the exact opposite of mine. She weighed 89 pounds. This almost makes sense since she is 4 ft. and 9 in. I like to believe in the saying 'opposites attract' or 'we complete each other .' She has a problem though, eating. She knows my like story and I know hers. Her parents are perfectionists and whatever she did, she never felt good enough. A way to solve this? Not eating.
We finally agreed to meet. I lived in Minnesota and she lived in Wisconsin . Our midpoint was Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. When I arrived there I was sweating like crazy, but I knew she wouldn't care one bit. We spent the day throughout the mall, we went to the park at MOA , the aquarium, and we did a little shopping. The day was amazing, I knew it because everything just, clicked. We headed to the parking lot. My throat swelled, it was coming to the end of the date. I have seen enough movies to know what comes next, a kiss. We were saying our goodbyes and i knew it was the right time to do it. Even though a parking lot isn't what i call romantic, it didn't matter. I knew this kiss was going to be perfect. I stared deep into her beautiful eyes. Just looking into them had me speechless. They were the perfect shade of green, enough to make me stare into them for hours without even blinking. I leaned in just a little bit closer. I could feel her breath on my lips. I slowly closed my eyes and leaned in closer. I puckered my lips and then we kissed. My stomach tied into knots, but in an amazingly good way. I felt so happy, for once. I felt like my life was complete. I didn't need to think another thought about being fat. I knew she felt the same way. She would never worry about her weight again. It was all almost unexplainable, but then again it completely explainable. It was love.
Answer:
Ok so aftr I quit panting and sliding off my chair..................yeah pretty good story. Needs a little work but ya got me...........well yes it did have quite an affect .... alrighty then!

Which university is better for Business? Question: I'm having a hard time choosing which school I should apply to though I need to send in the papers at the start of October. Can anyone give me some preferences on which school here offers the best course of Business:
- University of Indiana-Bloomington,
- University of Pittsburgh,
- University of Maryland
- and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
I can only pick 2, or at most 3 of them and I'm really confused. So far, the school which suits me the best is University of Wisconsin-Madison as the tuition is reasonable and I can work a little bit to help my parents with the fees.
Thank you very much ^^
P.S: Some info about me: I'm an international student from Vietnam. I'm 18 and I just graduated from a high school in Vancouver, Canada in April 2008.
Answer:
Of those mentioned, I'd definately go with Wisconsin-Madison. It is usually within the to 20 in all rankings and is known for being a great program. The work load is intense but not overwhelming. Also, plenty of top companies recruit.

Guitar Man & Secure... I'm sorry, based on your reaction I must have touched a nerve.
Answer:
Because you do not even need a science degree to perform some of the tasks involved in studying the "physics of 911." You need web designers and account and other miscellaneous staff. You need non-PhD's to handle the computing and development the equipment/techniques for data acquisition. Also, a degree is just a piece of paper. It does not limit you to a particular field. Someone who studies biology can turn and study Physics.
