Betta fish and leaves?
Question:
I know Indian almond leaf is the preferred choice for bettas, but is there a cheaper/more convinient leaf that i can use? I live in wisconsin so we don't have tropical plants to gather dried leaves from. Ive heard that oak leaves work but just not as good as IAL. My uncle has a money tree aka pachira tree, and i was wondering if i could use the dried leaves from that. I know leaves aren't necessary unless im trying to breed my bettas without success, but i just want to know this stuff.

Answer:
I have also heard that oak leaves are a good substitute for Indian Almond Tree leaves but I use styrofoam plates or cups in my betta breeding tanks with a piece of driftwood. The driftwood adds tannins to the water while the styrofoam provides the bubble nest cover. When using cups, just cut the cup in half so you are making a clam shell shape. They float just fine and usually stay where you put them when the open end is against the glass.

Are cheeses and other dairy products bad for you?
Question:
I've heard alot of people trying to lose weight and cutting out eggs and some people even cut out cottage cheese. I've always thought these things were healthy. And cream cheese isn't one of the healthier, but is it bad to have every once and a while. I ask cause I'm trying to lose 15 pounds by June. I don't eat too much meat (unless it's in a sandwhich of some kind)... so I eat a boiled egg with my salad, and cottage cheese to dilute the dressing (so i don't use to much). And a friend of my is telling me that my salad is a really unhealthy salad. :( It does look like a heavier salad, but counting the calories... it only reaches maybe 400 (if i add some low fat crutons, yum!). And doing a calorie count for my days... the highest i've reached is 1200...and that's on a day where i was ALWAYS eating. :( My average is 1059 calories a day. It sounds like a little, but i'm also not too active. I do stretches, then stay home all day and work on art projects. (so don't worry...doc says that you want to take in less calories if your less active...just to be sure to get my daily nutriants (or take a vitamin)). Just some advise and opinions on the cheeses. OH and i've also been snacking on this Wisconsin spreadable cheese with almonds. >.> I eat about 1 or 2 servings for my two snacks a day (one serving per snack time :3)

Answer:
No, cheese and other dairy products are not bad for you, as long as they are consumed in moderation. Just keep in mind that most cheeses, unless they are a reduced fat variety, are very high in saturated fats, ounce for ounce, since it is made mostly from milk fat. If you eat cottage cheese on a regular basis, I would recommend a low fat variety if you are trying to lose weight (you can usually find 1% milk fat, whereas regular cottage cheese is 4% milk fat.). I would also recommend no more than one egg every other day, since they are high in fat and very high in cholesterol. One large egg has over 200 mg. of cholesterol; to put this in perspective, 4 ounces of ground beef has less than half of that. It also has as much fat as half a tablespoon of butter. One other thing to consider is sodium. Most cottage cheese has about 400 mg of sodium per serving, and many dressings are also very high in sodium relative to calories, particularly most low or non fat varieties. Keep in mind that the more salt (sodium) you consume, the more your body will tend to retain water, which would make it more difficult to lose weight. I find that Balsamic vinegar with a little olive oil adds a nice zesty flavor to salads, and neither the oil nor vinegar has any sodium.
