Hotels near Beckley, West Virginia that aren't too expensive but that have a great view?
Question:
I'm taking a four-day working vacation next week and wanted to escape to the mountains, and I'd been considering somewhere around Beckley, WV, where I've been through a couple times and absolutely loved the view. I'm going to be working on some projects that will keep me more or less tethered to an electrical outlet somewhere, but if I'm going to be in a hotel, I'd really like one with a balcony that would give me a great view of the mountains around Beckley and that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. I'd like to pay no more than $50 a night, if possible. Any suggestions on any places with a view around Beckley that are still near "civilization" would be appreciated.

Looking for opinions of Beckley, West Virginia?
Question:
I am going there for a job interview later this month. I am interested in general impressions and specific information about the community.
Answer:
Beckley, WV - I lived there for 8 years and it really hasn't much to offer. It has a very low crime rate because most of the population is elderly.
Most stores have left the downtown area and have relocated to Eisenhower Blvd. which is a two lane road. (Walmart is the biggest store there). If you want to shop, do it before the first of the month because that is when everyone gets their welfare checks or social security checks and the traffic is bumper to bumper.
The nearest city is Charleston - about 50 miles away. There is nothing "cultural" to be found unless you want to see the "tuff-man" contest that is held about every 6 months here. Or you can go to see the Exhibition Coal Mine which is the biggest tourist attraction there.
There are no restaurants with class - there's a Ryan's near Walmart which is a buffet type establishment. It's packed to the ceiling on the first of the month. There is a Texas Steak House out by the Hwy 77 - also a Cracker Barrell.
The only good reason for my staying there for 8 years was the money I made and the low cost of living. The minute I was able to retire I did and moved out of the state.
Oh, I transferred there from Florida and my first year there we had about 4' of snow. The weather is horrid and the ice storms can shut the town down.
I see you're a surgeon - there are two hospital there and when I had a serious illness I had to be taken to Charleston for my surgery, so without a doubt you'd be an asset to this community. However, many doctors left the area because of the high cost to doctors for insurance so you probably should check out the rates.

Beckley West Virginia?

I have been searching to web for a few months now and stubled on a few pages of reviews on mountain state university and Beckley WV. I was wondering if anyone could tell me first hand what its like there? I am going to be going to MSU and would like to know what is there around there to do? Any bars that the college kids go to? Or am I going to be bored out of my mind? Any info would be great!

My info is old, but Beckley isn't far from my grandmother's place.
There's some rocking outdoor stuff, including whitewater rapids. I don't know about bars, but I can guarantee you I could find things to do around Beckley!
If I lived in West Virginia...so, so many places I would go, and so many things I would do! My first would be rafting, then I would climb. If you're bored in WV, you lack guts and imagination!

My man just went down there and is staying with some chick he claims is his friend and I just want to know what the setting is like. He said they are off city limits in some small town? Any insight??? He said that everyone knows each other and that they are in the boonies??? What is it like out there? Nice or really poor and depressed looking. Please let me know.. Also, what are the houses out there like? The houses that they auction off for dirt cheap??? I need to know. Is this like appalachia or what?

I live in the northern part of West Virginia, and I don't think Beckley is the boonies. Beckley is probably about 20,000 people, and where I live is about 1,500 people and the closest towns the size of Beckley to me are 60 miles away from where I live. I do live in the Appalachian mountains. The county where I live only has a total of 4 red lights, and some counties in West Virginia does not have a one red light or cops. If he only lives off the city limits, I personally would not call that the boonies. I feel West Virginians are fairly nice people. As for houses to buy, well I have seen them as low as $15 - $20 thousand dollars with an acre or 2. However West Virginia pay rate is low compared to other states, feel very luck to make $10 per hr. I'll let you know ahead of time that the roads are not very straight or flat. Left you a website I thought was interesting. If you would like more info, please feel free to email me.

Anyone know what you need to do after applying to become a beckley wv police officer?

After submitting an application for beckley of west virginia police dept. (city police, no state), how long does it take to get a response? Also how long is the training for a city officer, not a trooper?
Answer:
A response will be forthcoming when an opening is available or when city council approves more money for more officers.
Training length varies from place to place. If they send you to the State Police Academy in Kanawha County it could be from 6 to 12 weeks (I think). Then you will be assigned various duties like traffic direction, crowd control, etc. Then you will ride with a training officer for a period of time. Then probably assigned a partner for a while before you are able to ride on your own. At any rate better start doing a lot of running and push-ups , pull-ups (under and over-handed). lifting weights etc. Get a jump on things if you're serious. Above all...don't try to impress your superiors with things you may have learned on tv. Just keep your mouth closed and your ears,eyes, and your mind open. Don't volunteer for anything don't stand in front or in back of the crowd. DO NOT overtly try to show up the boys, and be prepared to take some ribbing. No matter what though do not let them draw you out (make you angry). Police forces do not like reactionary people too much. Keep your cool at all times. Oh yes...work very hard on your skills of observation. Do things like going into a store or diner and by just glancing see how much you can recall about the people there, what they are wearing, height, weight, hair color eye color etc. Who would you consider the most likely threat,practice it, but do it quietly, don't make people nervous. I used to live in Braxton County, and I can tell you one thing that's badly needed is free dental clinics. I never saw so many bad teeth in my life, and the people are so poor they can't afford to even travel to a dentist, let alone afford to pay for dental work. there needs to be one at least in Sutton., Beckley, Summersville, and a lot of other places.

What's the best cell phone service for the central/southern West Virginia area?

I currently have Verizon and it seems to work when I am there visiting. I am going to be relocating in the next couple of months to the area just south of Charleston - about 30 mins south of downtown, off of I-119. My job will have me based out of Charleston and traveling to Huntington, Beckley, Parkersburg, Elkins, etc. Just wondering if I should keep Verizon or if another carrier is doing better there. I do realize it will be spotty off of the interstates but just trying to get as much coverage as possible. Thanks in advance!
