City Description

Bonney Lake is a city in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,687 at the 2000 census. According to the Washington State Office of Financial Management, Bonney Lake ranked 7th of 279 eligible incorporated communities in population growth between 2000 and 2005. The 2008 population estimate according to the Office of Financial Management was 16,220. Bonney Lake is located at 47°11′13″N, 122°10′12″W (47.187019, -122.170035). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.5 square miles (14.3 km²), of which, 5.4 square miles (14.1 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (1.27%) is water. The greater area of Bonney Lake is upon a plateau, which one day may save the city itself. The city is near Mount Rainier, a 14,410-foot (4,390 m) volcano that may one day send a lahar into the valleys below. Bonney Lake will be safe, but the lower surrounding cities may not. As of the census of 2000, there were 9,687 people, 3,266 households, and 2,583 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,780.9 people per square mile (687.5/km²). There were 3,404 housing units at an average density of 625.8/sq mi (241.6/km²).
