City DescriptionBellingham, Washington is the county seat of Whatcom County in the U.S. state of Washington. It is the largest city in Whatcom County and eleventh largest in Washington. It is situated on Bellingham Bay, which is protected by Lummi Island, Portage Island, and the Lummi Peninsula, and opens onto the Strait of Georgia. It lies west of Mount Baker and Lake Whatcom (from which it gets its drinking water) and north of the Chuckanut Mountains and Skagit Valley. Whatcom Creek runs through the center of the city.
The Census Bureau estimate placed Bellingham's 2003 population at 71,289, and a recent calculation pushes it to 74,770. Residents of Bellingham are often referred to as "Bellinghamsters". The boundaries of the city encompass the former towns of Fairhaven (now home to the southern ferry terminus of the Alaska Marine Highway System), New Whatcom, and others.
The name of Bellingham is derived from the bay on which the city is situated. George Vancouver, who visited the area in June 1792, named the bay for Sir William Bellingham, the controller of the storekeeper's account of the Royal Navy.
The first white settlers reached the area in 1854. In 1858, the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush caused ... Read MoreCity Contained By:City Contains:- Fairhaven College

Questions Possibly Related to Bellingham, WashingtonProvided By Y! Answers
Bellingham Washington? Question: Is Bellingham Washington a nice place to raise a family? We where thinking of moving there later this year and was wondering if it's overall a safe place? Like are people getting robbed and murdered left and right? According to areaconnect.com it seems decent, but just to make sure.
Answer:
Bellingham is a nice town. It is strongly influenced by the presence of Western Washington University. During the summer, the town empties out. There is a small problem with homelessness in the city center, but it is not prevalent.
As a college student, I felt perfectly safe walking around town by myself. There are tons of parks and outdoor activities. It is a bit hard to find jobs because of the college, but if you are in a specialized field or already have a job lined up, you shouldn't have a problem.
By the way, if you want more answers, you may want to post this question under "Travel: Seattle". That's where all the Seattle area folk answer. :)

I live in Bellingham Washington and want to volunteer this Christmas eve, where can I? (with family)? Question: Enough with the over-consumption--I want to begin early teaching my 2 yr/old how to live sustainably, to live justly; exchanging over-priced gifts with my family makes me nauseous when so many suffer so greatly. My family can help, not monetarily, but with our hands and feet and minds. I'm just not sure where to specifically start. Can anyone help?
Answer:
Have you tried the Salvation Army, they always need help! The food bank needs volunteers to distribute food to the needy. Sometimes the churches do the same! Good luck!

Need afordable rental car at Bellingham Washington Airport? Question: I will be flying into Bellingham Washington Airport and need to rent a car for two weeks. The price is coming up on the high side, need ideas for economy car rental please.
Thank you
Answer:
Hi, I saw your other question about going to Bellingham and then to Montana. If you already read that answer, you saw my suggestion about flying on to Montana and then renting a car there instead of in Bellingham.
If you need a car in Bellingham, unfortunately they pretty much have you over a barrel. They're the northwesternmost sizeable town in the continental USA, so they're literally at an "end of everything" location and things are going to be more expensive there. (For example, gasoline in Bellingham usually costs more than anywhere else in Washington.)
You might do better to go further south for your car rental, even if you end up having to take a bus. I think you'll get a better deal in Seattle, or even in Everett or Burlington, than in Bellingham. Do some more checking online and see what the rental fee is if your starting point is somewhere other than Bellingham. Good luck!

How many days does it take to send a letter to Los Angeles from Bellingham, Washington? Question: HELP!
Answer:
For first class postage it SHOULD take only three days, so on the third day from the day you mailed it, it should make it to the destination (if you mailed it before the last pick up time at the post office, which is usually 5 pm.)
However.... mail gets misdirected all the time and goes on little detours, so I wouldn't get worried unless it's been a good week.

How long will it take to drive from Vancouver BC to Bellingham, Washington? Question: Planning to drive this Thursday morning (need to be at the Ferndale Refinery for 7am).
Answer:
For two years i drove this 4-6 times a week.
I still drive it several times a month.
Depending on where you are coming from, it will take an hour or less, the primary factors being traffic in Vancouver, and traffic at the border. I would allow an hour and a half just to make sure you get there on time, then you can go get a coffee at cruisin coffee, they are the best, while you are in ferndale waiting.
PS: Use the Peace Arch border crossing .... which is the primary one .... the pacific crossing is under construction so has delays and aldergrove isn't open until 8am.

I'm moving to Bellingham, Washington area. I have two sweet Pitbulls any suggestions on how to find housing? Question: We are in need of non-breed restricted houses, apartments, townhomes. In Mount Vernon, Sedro Woolley, Burlington or Bellingham WA. Our Pitbulls are very sweet and well trained. Please give any suggestions you may have.
Answer:
Hi-- You are going to love Bellingham! I lived there for several years and it is beautiful. As for the dogs, first you can do a search on apartments.com http://www.apartments.com/Washington/NorthwestWashington/Bellingh am,Everett&Vicinity/Bellingham . Check the box for "large dogs". There are apartments that do accept dogs with a deposit.
Also, I had a friend with 3 big dogs and she had good rental references and was always able to find homes. You may have a little better luck on the outskirts of Bellingham if you are looking for a house. I think if you get letters of reference and go talk to the people in person about your dogs, then you should be able to find a place.

Traveling to Bellingham Washington Airport? Question: I am flying into Bellingham Washington Airport and will then travel to Montanna. What are palces of interest to visit? Any activities that I should make a point of (dude ranches, trout fishing, hiking, sight seeing, etc...) I appreciate all infromation. Should I plan to rent a car from airport, will need to be back there in 2 weeks, or by chance is there alternate transportation to take advantage of (train, bus, tours)....???
Thank you in advance!
Answer:
Mount Baker is not far from Bellingham and probably has some hiking and/or fishing to offer. Check the town's tourism website (link below) for more ideas.
As for whether you should rent a car from the airport, it depends on where you're going in Montana. From Bellingham to Missoula (in the western end of Montana) is a LONG day's drive.
You might want to fly to Montana and then rent a car once you get where you're going there. From Bellingham, you can take Alaska Airlines to Seattle, and then to just about anyplace in Montana that has an airport (still on Alaska Airlines). Hope that helps!

How do i find a Wicca teacher in my area? I live in Bellingham Washington? Question: Im really really really interested in wicca, I have tried to study it and practice it, but my parents have been getting in the way, calling me a devil worshipper! There is no possible way for me to get books on it without them knowing, so I just wanted to find someone who would be willing to teach me....Im only thirteen but i really want this, I want it more than anything, so please how do i find a teacher!!!!????!!!!
Answer:
WitchVox.com
search www.egroups.com for on-line groups who might help.
However your being 13 will be a problem. Especially with parents who don't like you being a different religion.
Since your a minor, your going to run into people who don't want a legal hassle... don't get mad about this. Just persist and learn other things untill you are older.
Learn Tia Chi.. take lessons. This kind of training is not Wiccan, but the techniques can be helpfull later in life. Learn about yoga and meditation. Learn about herbs and things that are not just "Wiccan" and when you are older you will have a head start on your training. Learn about history and world religions and study the Tao de Ching. Watch tapes by Joseph Campbell, from your library.
And remember this, not all witches are Wiccans, and not all people who claim to be Wiccan know what they are talking about! Fakes abound! so be carefull.
Blessed be

Moving to Bellingham, Washington what to do? Suggestions? Question: Me and the Family are relocating to Bellingham,Washington. My Husband and my 13mt old son. We are a young couple, that needs suggestions. WHERE TO LIVE? WHAT TO DO? CHILDCARE? NIGHTLIFE? ETHNIC DIVERSITY?? LET ME KNOW.
Answer:
Hi, I live in Bellingham. Home prices in Bellingham are higher than neighboring cities like Ferndale, Lynden, and Blaine, but you can find a decent 3 bedroom place for under $300k. As far as what to do - we are located near Mt. Baker, Lake Whatcom, and the Puget Sound, so if you're into the outdoors, this is a great place. Childcare - there are several affordable day care places such as YMCA, Kid's World, and others. Being a college town, there is no shortage of nightlife - there are several bars downtown that cater to the college crowd and beyond. It's a great place to live, and not far from either Seattle or Vancouver, B.C. if you miss the big city life!
