How did Virginia get Arlington back from Washington D.C? Question: What is the history behind Virginia getting Arlington, when it appears to have been part of the original plan and compromise to create Washington D.C. out of Virginia and maryland?
Answer:
Basically, the federal government decided it was never going to use the land provided by Virgnia and gave it back in 1846.
Here's the full story, per the wikipedia:
Once part of Fairfax County in the Colony of Virginia, the area that contains Arlington County was ceded to the new U.S. government by the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1791, the U.S. Congress formally established the limits of the federal territory that would be the nation's capital as a square of 10 miles (16 km) on a side, the maximum area permitted by Article I, Section 8, of the United States Constitution. However, the legislation that established these limits contained a clause that prohibited the federal government from locating any offices within the portion of the territory that Virginia had ceded.
During 1791 and 1792, Andrew Ellicott led a team of surveyors that determined the boundaries of the federal territory. The team placed along the boundaries forty markers that were approximately one mile from each other. Fourteen of these markers were in Virginia.
When Congress moved to the new District of Columbia in 1801, it enacted legislation that divided the District into two counties: the county of Washington, which lay on the east side of the Potomac River, and the county of Alexandria, which lay on the west side of the River. Alexandria County contained the present area of Arlington County, then mostly rural, and the settled town of Alexandria (now "Old Town" Alexandria), a port located on the Potomac River in the southeastern part of the area of the present City of Alexandria.
Residents of Alexandria County had expected the federal capital's location would result in land sales and the growth of commerce. Instead the county found itself struggling to compete with the town of Georgetown, a port located in Washington County adjacent to the capital city (Washington City).
As the federal government could not establish any offices in the County, and as the economically important Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (C&O Canal) on the north side of the Potomac River favored Georgetown, Alexandria's economy stagnated. It didn't help that some Georgetown residents opposed federal efforts to maintain the Alexandria Canal, which connected the C&O Canal in Georgetown to Alexandria's port. Moreover, as residents of the District of Columbia, Alexandria's citizens had no representation in Congress and could not vote in federal elections.
The town of Alexandria had been a port and market for the slave trade. With growing talk of abolishing slavery in the nation's capital, some Alexandrians feared the local economy would suffer if the federal government took this step.
At the same time, there arose in Virginia an active abolitionist movement that created a division on the question of slavery in Virginia's General Assembly (subsequently, during the Civil War, Virginia's division on the slavery issue led to the formation of the state of West Virginia by the most anti-slavery counties). Pro-slavery Virginians recognized that Alexandria County could provide two new representatives who favored slavery in the General Assembly if the County returned to the Commonwealth.
As a result, a movement grew to separate Alexandria County from the District of Columbia. After a referendum, the county's residents petitioned the U.S. Congress and the Virginia legislature to permit the County to return to Virginia. The area was retroceded to Virginia on July 9, 1846.
In 1852, the independent city of Alexandria was incorporated from a portion of Alexandria County. This led to occasional confusion, as the adjacent county and municipal entities continued to share the name of "Alexandria". Alexandria County renamed itself in 1920 as Arlington County. The new name was borrowed from Arlington National Cemetery.

Where can I rent a horse in the Washington DC/Arlington VA area? Question: I am not looking for a guided trail ride, just would like to rent/lease a horse in the area.
Answer:
I don't know of any place in DC or Arlington that will rent a horse in the way you want. (For example, the Rock Creek Park stables only offers organized trail rides.) However, if you are willing to go a bit further, you can find horses to lease. One location that does this is Stonegate Stables in Aldie, VA:

Metro's Orange subway line goes through Rosslyn, and up Wilson Boulevard passing through the Courthouse, Virginia Square, Ballston and East Falls Church stations in Arlington.
Metro's Blue and Yellow lines pass through Pentagon City, Crystal City and National Airport before going into Alexandria.
To get to Metro, there is also a comprehensive bus system, including some buses operated just by Arlington (called "ART") that generally connect residential neighborhoods with one or more Metro stations.
For a map, go to http://www.metroopensdoors.com.
All of the Metro lines stop either at or near the Mall. Which of the museums will you be working at?
Metro is completely safe. Arlington is also considered a safe community.
Many of the stations also offer bicycle parking.
If you are able to afford their prices, you might look into Oakwood Apartments in Falls Church, which is one block past Arlington, and in walking distance to the East Falls Church station. They offer transient housing on a month-to-month basis.

How hard is it to drive Washington DC? Going to Nationals game, driving from Annapolis to Arlington.? Question: I will be driving from Annapolis to Arlington, Virginia and then from Arlington to the Nationals game. What type of traffic should I expect? I understand DC is hard to drive in, even for those who are used to major cities.
Answer:
Do you have reserved parking? There is little or no public parking available at the stadium--it's all set aside for season ticket holders who have paid extra, and other VIPs.
It's far better to park in Arlington and then take Metro to the game. That's what most people do. You'll also avoid the traffic that way.
If you don't have a specific reason for going to Arlington, you would do still better by parking at one of the Metro stations in Prince Georges County Maryland, such as at New Carrollton, and taking the Metro from there.

Why did George Washington Parke Custis build Arlington House?
Answer:
Arlington House was built as a living memorial to George Washington. Commissioned by his adopted grandson, George Washington Parke Custis, a significant portion of the north wing of the house, completed in 1802, was used to store George Washington memorabilia that Custis collected, including portraits, Washington's personal papers and his command tent from Yorktown. The house was designed by English architect George Hadfield. Custis once intended to call the estate Mount Washington. The property's later association with Robert E. Lee had nothing to do with Custis' original intention.

Any one in Washington DC and Arlington Virginia can tell me where 2 get 2 Washington Lee High School by subway
Answer:
Yes, this is very easy.
You take Metro to the Ballston station on the Orange Line.
When you come up, get the elevator on the north side of Faifax Drive. At the road surface you want to head EAST, that is toward the IHOP, and toward the church that you can see from there. Fairfax drive will be on your right as you walk. (I think it is a right turn from the door to the elevator, but I am not sure.
You will walk one block to North Stafford Street and turn left. Continue 3 blocks on North Stafford street (in the last block you will pass the track/football field for the high school. The school should be obvious at this point.

Where is the best place to shop and eat local food in Arlington Washington VA? Question: Is there any not-to-be missed spots to visit here ?
Answer:
If you want to stay in Arlington itself, avoid the chains--- there is so much more to see and do there!
For shopping, check out the Clarendon neighborhood (near the Clarendon Metro). It's very pedestrian-friendly and you'll find all sorts of shops, ranging from big, nationwide stores like Bed Bath and Beyond to small independant bookstores and antique shops.
For nightlife, don't miss Iota--- their food is great and reasonably priced, and after dinner step next door to their bar area where most nights you can catch a local band or an indie act. That's on Wilson Blvd. There's also Galaxy Hut and Rhodeside Grille nearby, both very fun places to stop in and have a beer.
For the ultimate in dive casual dining, Bob and Edith's on Columbia Pike is the best diner in town. Their hash browns rock!
Or try Queen Bee on Washington and Wilson (or thereabouts) for great Vietnamese--- there's other great Vietnamese and Thai places right in that strip.
Basically if you jump off the Metro at Clarendon, you can walk a mile or more in either direction (up or down the hill) and have about a million great restaurants, coffee shops and bars to pick from! Enjoy!
