Boy Scouts of America Venture Crew 258 Seeks Members. Dateline 24 Nov 2008, Colonial Beach, VA
On Friday evening the voting members of the William I. Cooper Memorial VFW Post No. 10574 voted unanimously to sponsor the Town of Colonial Beach's newest Scouting Unit. Venture Crew 258.
Venture Crew 258 invites the Town's and it's surrounding area's Youth (male and female, ages 14 years to 20 years old) to join us as members of our Venture Crew.
What is Venturing?
It is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age.
Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and Scouting promote the basic principles, the moral values, and the dedication to country and service to our fellow man that is and always has been important to both our organizations.
Venturing is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth, adult leaders, and organizations in their communities.
Local community organizations establish a Venturing crew by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community.
The result is a program of exciting and meaningful activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, to grow, to develop leadership skills, and to become good citizens.
Venturing crews can specialize in a variety of avocation or hobby interests.

Are You Sick of Junk Mail?
You stop to pick up the mail - it's full of credit card offers, catalogs, and other forms of junk mail. You don't have time to look at it so it piles up. As time passes, you end up throwing it in the trash can or the recycling bin. Putting it in the recycling bin is a good thing but actually there is something much, much better - never get it the first place! In other words - STOP THE JUNK MAIL! Following are free services you can take advantage of to reduce the amount of junk mail that you receive. Remember, registering at these sites won't stop all the mailings - you'll still get mail from local merchants, religious, charitable, professional, and alumni associations, politicians, companies with which you already do business, and items addressed to Household or Resident. However, you should see a tremendous reduction in the items in your mailbox pretty quickly.

- Maybe Wal-Mart Isn't So Bad For Small Business After All
We keep thinking about what we could bring to town to expand our tax base and provide jobs for our citizens... Found this article to be of interest... something maybe we should look into, at least in a scaled down size anyway.
September 18, 2008, 9:21 am Maybe Wal-Mart Isn't So Bad For Small Business After All Posted by Raymund Flandez
Over the years, many community and labor groups have fought to prevent Wal-Mart stores from opening up in their neighborhood. Most claim the big-box retailer harms, even destroys, small mom-and-pop businesses.
But a new study by researchers at West Virginia University finds Wal-Mart's supposed negative impact on the profitability and survival of small shops simply isn't true.
"Contrary to popular belief, our results suggest that the process of creative destruction unleashed by Wal-Mart has had no statistically significant long-run impact on the overall size and profitability of the small business sector in the United States," writes Russell S. Sobel and Andrea M. Dean of the WVU's Department of Economics. (You catch watch a Fox News video of Mr. Sobel talking about the study here.)
And for those small businesses that do close shop, others spring up to take their place, the study found.
Their paper entitled "Has Wal-Mart Buried Mom and Pop?: The Impact of Wal-Mart on Self Employment and Small Establishments in the United States" is being published in a forthcoming issue of the journal Economic Inquiry.
West Virginia's State Journal newspaper reported that the analysis also concluded that small-business bankruptcies declined over time and small businesses made just as much profit as before in states where there were numerous Wal-Mart stores.
What made small businesses more resilient? Better customer service, mainly. And that consumers don't necessarily need to stock up on basic goods all the time. They use that money that they save at Wal-Mart (which an ad earlier this year claims to be $2,500 each year) to spend on other items and services in town.
- Colonial Beach Council Torpedos Boat-Decal Proposal
After months of floating a plan to require boat decals, the Colonial Beach Town Council sank it this week.
In its most recent form, the plan would have required marina owners to buy the town decals each year and resell them to boat owners. The decals would have cost $225 for boats assessed at $5,200 or more and $25 for boats of lesser value.
Called a boating safety fee, the new tax would have generated about half of a $100,000 budget deficit the town faces this year, said Mayor Fred Rummage.
"We have to fill that hole," he said, while concurring with a council majority that boat decals were not the way to do it.
A poll of council members before a public hearing and vote on the decal plan Thursday night showed that six of the seven members were against the idea. Only Vice Mayor Trish King, who steered the plan through many meetings and drafts for nearly five months, said she favored it.
Councilmen who opposed the plan said it placed an excessive burden on marina owners.
They "should not be tax collectors. It's not up to them to enforce town laws," said Councilman Stephen R. Kennedy.
To encourage boaters to make Colonial Beach their home port, the town has reduced its personal-property tax on boats to just 1 cent for each $100 of a boat's assessed value. However, boat owners must also pay Westmoreland County personal-property tax of $1.86 per $100.
Some county boaters reportedly keep their boats in other localities, such as Maryland, that charge no personal-property tax.
"Boaters are the future of this town, and we need to do everything we can to encourage them," said Rusty Curley, owner of a Colonial Beach marina.
"We're a community that loves the water. Colonial Beach is for boaters. We want boats to stay in Colonial Beach," said Councilman Burkett Lyburn.

Serenity in Times Square? Come on...
When I think of peaceful and serene, New York's Times Square is not the first place that pops to mind.
Which may be why seeing a lighted billboard right there, in one of the busiest places in the country, featuring the new Welcome to Serenity website almost knocked me out of my chair.
Finally, after years and years of staring up at all those amazing Times Square ads for plays, I'm actually in lights on Broadway! This is very, very cool.
- There's only one thing wrong with Boy Scouts, there aren't enough of 'em. -- Will Rogers [1897-1935]
Dear Colonial Beach Parents/Grandparents/Guardians:
This is your son's invitation to join the America's largest youth organization. He can become a member of the Boy Scouts of America.
Scouting is fun-filled, educational, and a program with a purpose. Scouting helps develop boys' values of duty to God, Country, and others. Scouting's aims of character building, citizenship training and fitness have remained unchanged since the program began in 1910. Boys have fun and at the same time they develop leadership skills by serving as boy leaders.
Greatness is not found in possessions, power, position, or prestige. It is discovered in goodness, humility, service, and character.
The Boy Scouts of America has a program for your son:
TIGER CUBS is for boys in the first grade. The program focuses on activities for a parent-boy team from each family; each boy must have a parent partner. They meet at the Colonial Beach Baptist Church on Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 PM and follow a pre-selected theme of their own choosing.
CUB SCOUTING is for boys in the 2nd, 3rd grades. Cub Scouts have a Den Meeting each week, usually in the Den Leader's home. Once a month, all of the dens in the Cub Scout Pack come together for a Pack Meeting where they see exhibits and displays, have skits, ceremonies, and songs, and receive their awards and badges. Cub Scouting is a family and neighborhood centered program.
4th and 5th graders join the excitement of WEBELOS, and work to become prepared to join the adventures of Boy Scouts during the spring of their 5th grade year.
The Boys Scouts of America is an organization for boys age 11 and older. The purpose of the organization is to teach responsibility, leadership and citizenship, as well as to have fun. Many of the activities are planned around nature and the outdoors. Joining the Boy Scouts is an exciting adventure for newcomers and a rite of passage for boys who were cub scouts when they were in elementary school.
- To know where your're going, you've got to know where you've been
by Anne Congdon 12.NOV.08
Chairman David Coombes brought two pieces of information to the planning table this month.
Coombes who has said previously, on multiple occasions, that existing documentation concerning prior plans for the Town's development should be reviewed, shared with other commission members the September 1999 Recommendations of the Planning Commission for the Development of the Boardwalk as well as the June 22, 2004 Colonial Beach Boardwalk Vision Statement.
Contained within the 1999 document was a statement described in the following language: "The Commission was particularly moved by the following statement which appeared in Colonial Beach's first Comprehensive Plan: 'In conclusion, it can be seen that Colonial Beach has some serious community problems. These problems stem from the Town's history, its economic base, and its location.'
The Town is a resort area which can no longer compete with the first-class resorts such as Virginia Beach for tourists. The Potomac is polluted, the beach is small and buildings are deteriorated. Yet the Town does not have an adequate industrial base to make up for this loss of tourist revenue. Consequently the Town is going nowhere - only fighting time. Colonial Beach must make basic decisions for the future - soon."
- THANK YOU COLONIAL BEACH, VIRGINIA
Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack 258 of Colonial Beach, VA wishes to thank the Citizens of the Best Little Town on the East Coast!
Last year we collected 3200 lbs of dry goods and canned goods for those families in need in our area.
This year the generosity of the Town's Citizens helped us to more than achieve our goals for this year's food collection event.
Because of your help and kindness, we surpassed last years amount by collecting 3,850 lbs of food... 650 lbs more than last year.
We had a total of 69 volunteers, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Adult Leaders, Scout Parents, and friends of the troop & Pack who racked up 586 Volunteer hours over the 1st and 2nd Saturday in November.
Not bad kids... Not Bad at all.

The residents of The Riverwood housing complex might not be getting an early Christmas present this year, but if everything continues as planned, they might very well be wishing one another a truly Happy New Year. That's because the Colonial Beach Town Council seems to be fully on board with supporting the sale of the Riverwood property to Related Apartment Preservation (RAP). Richard Hurlbert, bond counsel for the group, made an appearance at the Town Council's work session on October 30, 2008 and brought everyone up to speed. Hurlbert said that the marching orders he had received in August were to "approach the [Colonial Beach] Housing Authority and assess them. We contacted all but one", he continued.
- Troop 258 Members Earn Kings Dominion Awards
Three members of Troop 258, Colonial Beach, VA are also members of the Kings Dominion Scare Crew.
Eagle Scout and Assistant Scoutmaster Trevor Alger, Committee Member and Venture Scout Karen Probst, and Life Scout Timothy Alger "Did Their Best" to bring the spirit of the Halloween to life for Kings Dominion customers.
For Trevor this was his 3rd year working the park, for Karen and Timothy their first year.
During the Halloween Haunt program put on by Kings Dominion this past October two of the Scouters earned Monster of the Night Awards for their enthusiastic, or should that be "enthusiaction" (as Sam & Betty Bridgeman, Long-time Scouters from Reedville,VA, would say) performances in the parks mazes.
Trevor worked the "CLUB BLOOD" Venue and appeared as a mix of the "Dark Knight's Joker" and "Dr. Frank-N-Furter" from the "Rocky Horror Picture Show". I guess that's scary all by it self...
Karen worked the "TOXIC PLAGUE" Maze... as one of the Sssssnake People... slithering up to one park guest after another, giggling softly as they passed by... In some cases... they broke the sound barrier in their passing.
Timothy was transformed into a deranged, chainsaw carrying character, straight out of Texas who could change your idyllic Fall day into a Fall nighttime nightmare of fear and blood along the "Blue Ridge Blood Bath Highway".
Upon completion of this annual event Trevor was selected as one of four Maze Monsters of the year. The three Scouters have plans of returning next year for a follow-up performance of this years antics.

City DescriptionColonial Beach is a town in Westmoreland County, Virginia, United States. The population was 3,228 at the 2000 census. Possessing the second largest beach front in the state, Colonial Beach was a popular resort town in the early to mid-20th century, before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge made ocean beaches on the Eastern Shore more accessible to visitors from Washington, D.C. Because the Maryland state line ended at the "low water mark" of Virginia's Potomac River shore, from 1949 to 1958 Colonial Beach offered slot machines in pier casinos extending into legal Maryland waters. Colonial Beach has twice been devastated by hurricanes, Hurricane Hazel in 1954 and Hurricane Isabel in 2003. The family of Alexander Graham Bell maintained a summer home in Colonial Beach, The Bell House which still stands today. Sloan Wilson, author of The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, retired and died in Colonial Beach. As of 2007, efforts are underway to reconstruct the nearby birthplace of President James Monroe as a museum. George Washington, the first President of the United States was born here.

Questions Possibly Related to Colonial Beach, VirginiaProvided By Y! Answers
Has anyone ever heard of Colonial beach in Virginia? Question: any details would be nice
is it a nice beach? fun? things to do?
Answer:
It's on the Potomac River on Virginia's Northern Neck. The Potomac River is technically in Maryland and so for many years, there was a pier out into the river where things that were legal in Maryland and not Virginia could be done. The pier was destroyed by Hurricane Isabel in 2003 and has not been replaced.

Colonial Beach Virginia? Question: Any one know of a Fidel Andrada from that small town?
What ever happened to him?
Answer:
I know of a Fidel in college and I remember him telling me that he was from Colonial Beach.
He dropped out of college after the first year and joined to Navy.
Lived in Norfolk for a while, before he returned to GMU to get his degree.
He became a teacher and lived in Fairfax.
This is when I lost him because of this woman he met (some girl named Ashley). She was all wrong for him, and we basically lost touch because of it.
I hope he's doing well.
He's a great guy, but that girl was simply a bad choice.

From Colonial Beach, Virginia? Question: I remember these two clowns (Rob Townsend and Fidel Andrada) from high school.
What has happened to the two of them?
Are they still friends?
I lost touch o them after Graduation, and they went off to college at GMU.
I heard Rob became a film writer/director.
What happened to Fidel?
Answer:
Wow!
This is wierd.
This is the second question about Fidel today.
And they're obviously about the same guy (Colonial Beach)
I lost touch of him about 5 years ago when he met this sl*t of a woman. It was pretty sad. He was really blinded by her.
He's a great guy. I hope he's still not with her, because I'm sure he's got to be going through hell.
Never met Rob, but I've heard im mention his name a few times.
They were great HS buds. He thought highly of him...

I would love to take the kids to Bush Gardens and to Colonial Virginia too. what a nice vaca. need to research now to save for next year. has anyone gone before???
Answer:
Hi! i've lived in va beach for about 15 yrs... i hear a lot of good things about KOA campgrounds. it's realy close to the beach
http://www.koa.com/where/va/46109/
from there Busch Gardens is about an hour away but its worth the trip. it has tons of good rides and a really good section for the smaller kids (mine is 5 and she loves it) also i hear WAter Country USA is nice too but Ocean Breeze Funpark is closer to KOA and cheaper if you're looking for a waterpark
http://www.bushgardens.com/home.aspx
http://www.ocean breezewaterpark.com/
The "strip" by the beach has tons of things to do like minature golf, haunted houses, fun houses, mirror mazes, resturants, bars & clubs, candy shops.
Also next to the KOA campground is The VA Marine Science museum which has fish, sharks, seals, penguins..stuff like that
http://www.vmsm.com/
Also for kids there is the Portsmouth Childrens Museum which my daughter loves (again..she's 5, not sure how old yours are) its about 20 minutes away in Portsmouth but well worth it

Anyways...t here's some starting points for you. I hope you have a good time!

Staying at Staybridge suites in Chesapeak,Virginia? Question: I finally found a place that looks good to stay with my wife, 4 year old daughter and dog.Has anyone ever stayed here, if so how is the nieghborhood, and ofcourse the hotel. What are some cool things to do.We are going to go to virginia beach, busch gardens, colonial williamsburg..any other ideas.Thanks.
Answer:
We just came back from WILLIAMSBURG (5th time) but last summer went to Ocean City MD and summer before to MAINE. Normally when we go to to WILLIAMSBURG, we have been lucky to rent better timeshare facilities that are equivalent to Staybridge Suites and Residence Inn <= which we normally stay at in Atlanta GA.
My Dad and brother in law were stationed in Norfolk so one or two days we actually drive down to VIRGINIA BEACH and enjoy several beaches incl the Boardwalk. I think JAMESTOWN is GREAT and very educational, and my wife goes head over heels at the OUTLET MALL that has been expanded and is a FEMALE's DREAM of being in Paradise. When I served in Army, I had the pleasure of traveling conference at the historic CHAMBERLAIN? HOTEL and nearby FORT MONROE <= which is extremely interesting for history bluffs as Robert E. Lee helped construct the moat as an Army Lieutenant plus they have the cellblock that JEFFERSON DAVIS was held prisoner during the Civil War... YORKTOWN is also closeby
Hope the Above Info Helps!
