We know he was there until 1992. Plase help if you can. His first name starts with an R. I am not sure if it is Robert or Richard

    Chesapeake Virginia???
    Question:
I'm an optometry student with hopes of leaving St. Louis after getting my OD. I've done some researching and Chesapeake seems to be a nice city. Basically, here's the deal, I've lived in St. Louis all my life and have never been able to get far enough away from the ghetto. Crime here has got on my last nerve, as does the weather. If you have knowledge of Chesapeake, could you please give me your honest evaluation on the following: 1. Crime/safety (remember, I'm from STL, so it's more violent crimes I'm concerned with) 2. Market for new doctors (African-American male doctors to be more specific). 3. Real Estate: looking for newly constructed areas--strong brick homes, cul-de-saq, gated, etc. I don't really like the traditional southern-looking plantation style panel homes. 4. Entertainment: VA Beach is nearby, so there has to be something popping in the area; but I'm concerned with Chesapeake itself. Any nice restaurants, LAKES, theaters and other attractions? 5. Climate?

    Answer:
Ive been in Virginia my whole life except for Saint louis. I lived in Loughborough Ave in south side STL for a year or so a while back ive seen most of the ghetto crap out there........ and D.C., Maryland and Virginia is a whole other ball game believe me. Overall the tide water area has its good spots and bad spots. Newport News is probably the most ghetto of them all. Virginia Beach sucks brown water gangs no cursing signs everywhere it’s a strange place. P-TOWN (Portsmouth) is kind of bad as well Chesapeake area isn’t to bad though not as bad as the rest. P.S. If its crime your worried about move to northern virginia its safer than southern Virginia. (With the exception of D.C.)

Would Chesapeake Virginia be a good place to live?
    Question:
My husband is in the US Navy and he will return in late January. Once he gets back we have to relocate to VA where he is stationed. We had originally planned to live in VA Beach as I know that area is pretty nice. I however found an apartment that I absolutely love in Chesapeake VA. I need to know what the area is like and if it is pretty safe, as I will be staying there for 6 months alone once every two years.

    Answer:
Like any city, Chesapeake has both good and bad areas. On the whole, I think Chesapeake compares favorably to Virginia Beach. Chesapeake is less touristy and less impacted by the tourist fever that tends to grip much of Virginia Beach. My aunt has lived in Chesapeake (Great Bridge and now along the intercoastal waterway) for 50 years. She never speaks of safety issues. In addition, I have other friends in the area that speak highly of Chesapeake.

How is the cost of living in Chesapeake, Virginia?
    Question:
Good? Bad? Decent? How about gas? Anything you could tell me about the cost of living would be great.

    Answer:
You can buy a decent home for 250K and up. Median household income is around 41K, I got gas yesterday for 2.65 a gallon. Apartments range from 700 and up. Depending on where you're going to live, traffic around the Greenbrier area is horrendous, but they're doing interstate construction in that area. $12.00 an hour pay in this area is about average. We have every chain restaurant and store imaginable, weather is normally good, humid in the spring and summer. Have had a mild winter so far this year, a little snow one weekend. I played golf Saturday 2/9, and ended up in shirt sleaves by the end of the round. Hope this helps.

What is the weather like in Chesapeake, Virginia at this time of year?
    Question:
I was wondering if it snows there? Or if it is sunny all year round. Thanks

    Answer:
Right now its cloudy and 58* at 10:30 AM. The weather varies this time of year. Thanksgiving day is supposed to be 70* and chance of thunderstorms then drop into the 50's for a high for the rest of the weekend, then into the 60's next week.

Buying House and Moving to Chesapeake / Virginia Beach soon. What are good/bad neighborhoods?
    Question:
I'm not very familiar with the neighborhoods of the Hampton Roads area but given where I'm going to be working I want a place preferably either in Chesapeake (near Va Beach) or in Virginia Beach itself. I want something in a 'decent' neighborhood and I'm trying to avoid the bad ones since I am a single female living alone. Some of the areas I've looked at houses in are Campus East, College Park, Green Run, Windsor Woods, and South Norfolk. If anyone could give me a response on the neighborhodos I'd appreciate it.

    Answer:
I know every area you listed......they are all affordable homes but most are not pleasant areas to live, especially alone. Windsor Woods would be the best choice. Definitely not Campus East and not Green Run.....it's hard to find an affordable home in VB that's in a desirable neighborhood. Some good areas would be Great Neck, Hilltop, Chicks Beach, Shadowlawn,....just to name a few

how and why did a system of forced labor emerge in the Chesapeake and Virginia Colonies?

    Answer:
The answer above is correct...sort of. Tobacco was the Virginia/Chesapeake Bay area crop.. You have to go further South for cotton. North Carolina was Tobacco also. But growing Tobacco was SERIOUSLY labor intensive. Harvesting it alone is back breaking work, as pretty much any North Carolina and Virginia native will tell you. Also....Virginia did NOT use NATIVE LABOR. Virginia was home to one of the super large Iroquois Confederacies. Colonists were lucky to have survived the local natives period.... let alone "ENSLAVING" them. The Iroquois Chief/King Powhatan saw the Colonists use in new trading for his growing empire. The Spanish in the far South and Islands did use local native for dual trade.....native for blacks. Anyway......Tobacco was the ONLY reason for a LONG time that Virginia & the Chesapeake Bay prospered at all. There was a call for Tobacco in Europe. Virginia supplied it. To help produce the demand, Virginia turned to slavery. They were the first American Colony to take to slavery, they were the first to stop importing slaves also. Virginia hold some of the oldest African American communities in the country.....those and the Gullah of South Carolina and Georgia coast, ancestors of "dumped cargo" from a slave ship blown way off course during a hurricane. Sick, starving, out of drinkable water, and heavy damages, the ship dumped them in the coastal islands of Georgia and South Carolina before limping South towards Cuba. You can also see many of their ancestors in the local Native Ameircan Tribe of Lumbees. Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay area is also home to the MOST recognized Native Ameircan Tribes in th country. The local Natives out lived the colonists, the tobacco growers, and the Ameircan Revolution.

what is the weather like in virginia beach and in the norfolk/chesapeake area?
    Question:
im planning on going to visit my family in that area sometime this summer but i dont know what the weathers like there. never been on that part of the country. i live in houston, tx so im used to houston weather. o and it might be me and my boyfriend driving there from houston.

    Answer:
The weather in Hampton Roads (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, etc.) is similar to Houston (humid-subtropical). Summer is mid-80's, spring and fall are 70's and gorgeous. Winter is fairly mild and only occasionally dips below freezing. Snow is a rarity. Because of all the water it is humid here and it can especially be felt in the summer. We get pretty regular rain (3-4 inches every month). Storms can be pretty intense and it can be windy on occasion. Overall, the weather is nice, if unpredictable at times.
