    Chantilly is an unincorporated community located in western Fairfax County and southeastern Loudoun County of Northern Virginia. Recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau as a census designated place (CDP), the community population was 41,041 as of the 2000 census. It is named after the town of the same name in France. Chantilly is part of the Washington metropolitan area and is approximately 24 miles (39 km) from Washington, D.C. Chantilly is home to Washington Dulles International Airport, which serves Washington, D.C. It is also the location of the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center annex of the National Air & Space Museum and the headquarters of the National Reconnaissance Office. During the American Civil War on September 1, 1862, the Battle of Chantilly (or Ox Hill) was fought nearby. Following his victory at the Second Battle of Bull Run (or Second Manassas), Confederate General Robert E. Lee directed Major General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson to cross Bull Run on August 31 and sweep around the position of Major General John Pope's Union Army of Virginia at Centreville.     Sorry friend, you are completely hosed! I couldn't wish a worse commute like that on anyone. You have been sentenced to a commute that has only the worse alternatives for east/north access to Ft. Myer. Your commuting time, will be of some assistance, however, your return commute will be miserable for certain. Ft. Myer is situated between the confluence of Rt. 50 and I-395 (aka I-95). Rt. 50 cuts a direct path from Chantilly to Ft. Myer, however, it is local traffic. I-66 is an interstate High Occupancy Interstate that becomes HOV2 ONLY inside the beltway. Depending on your ability to obtain a second rider, will improve your quality of life! I highly recommend it as that is your best alternative. Failing that, you can take I-66 and exit at I495 to Springfield/Alexandria (not sure what the new signs say...I never pay attention). Take the first exit at Rt. 50 EAST, which is timed during the commutes to improve the traffic light timing. My suggestion is to get in touch with Rideshare/Commuter Connections to find or start a car/vanpool to and from your place of work. Try the links provided below. I also provide the link to trafficland.com. This site is both free and pay and includes all the traffic cameras along the major arteries of I-66; I-95; I-495 (beltway); I-270. I never leave home without checking out the cameras. Your alternate routes to use are Rt. 29 (I do not recommend this as it is not commuter friendly) Others may respond with more elaborate escape routes or side streets. GPS have improved alternatives and will improve both your gas mileage and patience. Hope this helps. 15 years reverse commuting to Fair Lakes/Chantilly EDIT: The washington post this morning has a story about the GPS capability of the new Apple i-Phone that can interface with microsoft live's website which shows real time traffic flow...so am adding a new site.     why would the cops lie to us?

    on tuesday there were cops swarming everywhere by my work. down the road there were 4 cars (2 marked, one unmarked, and one SUV) and they had the dogs out. at that same corner was a bike (motorcycle) cop and turning onto the street was another unmarked. as i was going down the road that the unmarked was turning off of, i passed 2 more bike cops and yet another unmarked. on that road, you pass a highschool, and then there is an open field that is used as an off-leash dog park. in the field were 2 helicopters (they werent our county's tho, i know them) and there were 2 more bike cops, and a marked car, and you could see the cops in the bushes. at the end of that road was a black SUV off to the side, and inside it were 4 guys dressed completely in black, sunglasses to match, and what looked like bodyarmer. we had NO clue what was going on, it was cauing massive traffic issues cause everyone was staring and not paying attention to where they were driving. we were really worried that something was going on at the highschool, because 2 people from that highschool have gone "off" and killed people, one was the VT shooter and the other opened fired at the local police station (this is chantilly virginia btw - so westfields HS was the highschool in question). when i got back from lunch i told my boss and the receptionist what was going on, and the receptionist called the local police station to ask what was happening and if we should be worried and stay in the building (we had that DC sniper thing around here too, i was 2 blocks from one of the shootings and had no idea it was happening). They told us it was just "tactal trainning drills" and not to worry. well today in the paper we read that Bush was one road over - those were his presidental helicopters and the entorage. we cant believe that the cops would flat out lie about it. whats so hard about saying that they are just covering the president who just happens to be a few blocks away? now i dont feel safe at all that if something serious WAS to happen in the area again that we would be notified. is it just our county's policy or do cops not tell civilans about whats going on on a regular basis? i know that we werent told about the police shootings until it was reported on the news, that was just down the road! we could have been going to lunch and been caught in the cross-fire! yeah i know they didnt want to just say the president is here - but not telling anyone ANYTHING was causing a lot of panic. and its not like they said what building the president was in, but they could have just said he was giving a speech in the area and it would have helped, ya know?

    you'll have to travel closer to stafford or fredericksburg (maybe even culpeper) some of the better locally owned salons are elle's dixie's hair studio (awesome stylists - platform stylists and educators there) blondie's simply you (not the easiest place to find but WELL worth the effort) skin appeal isn't worth the money that will be spent (students stylists with professional prices) let me think of some more...........brb curl up n' dye on caroline street in downtown f'burg is hard to get in but she's a great stylist (not the guy there - the owner is good) montage has some good stylists - a bit out of the way, but worth it for the price riverside salon is also very good , but the price just went up to like $55. hair studio of olde towne (across the street from riverside) is usually easy to get into and won't break the bank, either.
