  • City Description

Burke is a census-designated place and an unincorporated community in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. As of the 2000 census, Burke had a total population of 57,737. The area of Fairfax County known as Burke is named for Silas Burke (1796–1854), a 19th century farmer, merchant, and local politician who built a house on a hill overlooking the valley of Pohick Creek in approximately 1824. The house is still standing. When the Orange and Alexandria Railroad was constructed in the late 1840s, the railroad station at the base of that hill was named Burke's Station after Burke, who owned the land in the area and donated a right-of-way to the railroad company. The community that grew up around the railroad station acquired a post office branch in 1852. Currently, railroad tracks on the same historical line are owned by the Norfolk Southern Railway and form part of the Manassas line of the Virginia Railway Express commuter rail system, of which two stations lie in the Burke area. During the American Civil War, the railway station was garrisoned by Union troops. On December 28, 1862, Confederate cavalry under General J.E.B. Stuart raided the station. Stuart seized supplies from the

What bait/lures/etc should I use to fish Burke Lake in Fairfax, Virginia?
    Question:
Any information would be helpful. I don't have a boat, however, so I'll be fishing from the shore.

    Answer:
I really dont know that lake but either your fishing for trout, bass or a small number of other species. Almost everything goes for live bait, like a worm on a hook with a bobber. If your fishing for bass maybe a jig.

Are there any dance spots in Burke, Virginia?
    Question:
Someone told me about a place called Rain or Raina

    Answer:
It's Rain Lounge and Restaurant: http://www.fairfaxrain.com/ The site is under construction. Antonio Burrell opened Rain (as chef) in November, but Feb 1 left for another restaurant and his position has been filled by Nathan Bearfield. They should be up and running now, but with a completely different menu... not sure what that did to the rest of the venue. They're located at 10418 Main St., Fairfax; 703-865-6150 The bigger issue facing the business appears to be licensing: http://www.connectionnewspapers.com/article.asp?article=81099&pap er=63&cat=104 so depending on how that goes, I'm not sure if it will continue to operate as a dance place... and there's also a security problem, as there often is with a nightclub type venue of this size. I wish they'd left their old web site up so you could see it. The whole place makes you feel like you're underwater with blue everything, including the lighting, they even have a waterfall... and Antonio had this nuevo latino cuisine that was presented totally upscale. The food was just art! I'm not sure... but my understanding is that the new chef is going more toward American standard stuff... baked potato soup, steaks, seafood, whatever... pot roast, who knows - lol

Any good neighborhoods in Burke, VA?
    Question:
My husband and I are looking for a modest 2 bed 1.5 - 2 bathroom house for around 250K in Virginia and we want to move in a few months. We have our hearts set on Burke but we visited the town and were unhappy with one neighborhood we saw. Any neighborhood suggestions for a young couple looking to raise a family in Northern VA?

    Answer:
What neighborhood in Burke did you see? I have some friends who live there, I am not too impressed with the area. They have a nice townhouse, but when they have company over the company has to park across the street and walk up a pretty steep hill. The neighborhood we have to park in also doesn't look great. Too many houses in too small a space in my opinion. Parking is a nightmare, traffic is bad, and you see a lot more people speeding in that area and driving recklessly than in other areas. If I were you I'd go out towards Loudoun County somewhere. South Riding is a good area where lots of young families are living now. The traffic on the major highway near there can back up which is a downfall, but the whole area is really nice compared to other parts of Northern Virginia. There are lots of restaurants, and the communities seem to have plenty of parking. And many of the shopping centers are close to townhome communities. The only problem there is that the houses are a little bigger, so if you anted an actual single family home, there aren't many of modest size, but the townhomes are really nice. If you want to go closer to Burke you can find some places in Centreville or Fairfax that are decent, you just have to be aware of traffic; it can take you 15 minutes to go to a nearby store. I live in a nice quiet neighborhood in Clifton. It's secluded, and the deck in the back of my townhome faces trees and a walking path, not other townhomes which is unfortunately a common theme in N. Va. There are also houses in this neighborhood, and parking is never an issue. Lots of younger familied too. Chantilly VA has a few nicer areas, but be careful there, a lot of the smaller modest SFH's are in areas that aren't the best. It seems to be in N. VA if you want a SFH that is a smaller size, the neighborhood isn't the best, and the houses are usually older. The past 20 or so years, the new houses are all bigger lots. You can look at a neighborhood called Greenbriar in Fairfax/Chantilly. They have decent size SFH's. They are still older, but more families live there, you don't find many homes with 6 adults living under one roof in that neighborhood.

    Finding Edgar Allen Poe's Grave?
    Question:
Hi, I love All work by Edgar Allen Poe and I Live in Burke, Virginia and I heard that his grave was in Baltimore Maryland, Which isn't that far away from me. Would some one be able to give me the address? I would LOVE to go visit it. I'm visiting his house soon as well.... Thanks in Advance

    Answer:
Westminster Hall and Poe's grave are in the southeast corner of Fayette and Greene Streets. (See map under Images.) From the Poe House on Amity Street: Continue south on Amity to the end of the block. Turn left on Lexington to the first traffic light, which is Fremont. Turn right on Fremont and follow for 2 blocks south to Baltimore Street. Turn left on Baltimore and go 3 blocks to Paca. (The University of Maryland Hospital will be on your left and the Veterans Hospital on your right.) Turn left on Paca and stay in the left lane. Go one block and turn left on Fayette, heading west. The next street is Greene. Westminster Hall and the Poe Grave are immediately on the left, at the corner. From the Inner Harbor, south of town: Take Charles Street (one way) north to Fayette. Turn left on Fayette. Follow Fayette to Greene. Westminster Hall and the Poe Grave are immediately on the left, at the corner. Parking: Metered parking is available on the street. (The meters take quarters. Do not go beyond Greene Street on Fayette looking for metered parking as this is likely to take you far out of your way.) For off-street parking, turn left on Greene for one block. Turn left on Baltimore and continue to the traffic light. Turn left on Paca and there is a garage (payment is required) on the right.

I'm looking into transfering from one public school to another public school in a different district....?
    Question:
I currently go to Robinson Secondary in Burke, Virginia, and I'm looking into transferring from Robinson to Woodson Secondary in Annandale, Virginia. I don't have any other reason other than that I would like to transfer because it's closer to the Academy classes I attend, and I have more friends that I'm closer to in Woodson, rather than Robinson. I am wondering, on this form : www.fcps.edu/DIT/forms/se222.pdf What should I choose that would allow me to go to Woodson? Also, what does "Senior Status" mean exactly? Next year, 2008-2009 is my Senior year and I would like to end my year at Woodson, I've been at Robinson since seventh grade, (it's a secondary school). And would like to go to Woodson. Do you guys have any idea as to what I should do to make that happen? I've been told that I need to fill out that form, send it to my counselor, who will then send it to "Robinson's main principle", and then in turn it will go to Woodson's counselor then lastly their principle.. One of my issues is transportation, but I'm going to make that work, so my main issue is getting into the school, and thusly, I'm wondering exactly how you guys think I should make that happen.

    Answer:
First let me make it clear that my experience with changing schools in Virginia has been due to moves, so it may be a bit different in your case. But having said that I think the advise may still apply. Have your parent/gaurdian go to the Annandale school board supervisor and request the forms for transferring. As a curtesy to Burke District, let them know on the same day as well. This will help expedite matters greatly, if they are expecting the paper work. Also you may need to go ahead and sign a release form there as well. Some counties in Virginia have the option of going to the school of your choice, so it should be a matter of filling out the appropriate paper work. It will have to be signed by your parent/guardian and processed by the school board. Compared to S.C. or N.C., V.A. school system has been great to work with. (we were a military family for a while and moved a lot.) The senior designation is usually based on the number of credits you have. If you have enough course creditis to qualify it should be doable. I have found that being the parent, I can make things happen a lot more effectively, than if I wait for the school system to do it for me. The main thing is to be polite and fill out all the forms. Be sure to keep a copy of everything. It is not uncommon for the paper work to get lost, and if you have a copy to replace it with, it will save a lot of trouble. Also be sure you have a copy of your vacination records, birth certificate, social security number, and a proof of current residence (a bill usually works). Most districts will require them, even if you have that info in your current school records, as part of the transfer process. If you have all of your information gathered and copied before going to the school board office, it will help things move much quicker. Hope all this helps and your new school year goes well.

How will the Democrats gun control agenda play out in rural America?
    Question:
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) are among those who have said that the Virginia Tech shootings underscore the need for tougher regulation. "Everyone's afraid of the NRA," said McCarthy's spokesman, George Burke. "It's a pro-gun House and a pro-gun Senate. That's just the reality of it."

    Answer:
It won't play out well if they insist on targeting law abiding gun owners. People are only afraid of what they don't know and I would assume they are ignorant about the NRA. Democrats can't pick and choose which amendments they want to stand by. The second amendment has nothing to do with hunting either! As long as there is mental illness there will be people like Cho. How about addressing our non existant mental healthcare in america? Without the second amendment all other amendments mean nothing.

Best School Area in Northern VA?
    Question:
I am considering Move to Northern Virginia. Anyone knows the best school district in VA, such as Alexandria, Fairfax, Burke?Compare with Montergomery County, Horward County and AA county of MD, Is Northern VA better than these counties?

    Answer:
The competition among best public schools in the Washington DC Metro area is between: (i) FAIRFAX VA COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM, (ii) ARLINGTON COUNTY VA PUBLIC SCHOOLS <= much smaller and (iii)MONTGOMERY COUNTY MARYLAND. Why? Locationwise Fairfax County and Arlington County are closer in and they have attracted many college educated couples so home prices tend to be higher and Fairfax County government is well run. The school districts in Montgomery County MD (ROCVILLE, BETHESDA, SILVER SPRING) that are close in are also competitive and likewise have high SAT scores but in my opinion Maryland taxes are higher bec County has 50% piggyback tax on top of state income tax whereas Virginia has state income tax but they handle local tax based on book book value of automobiles. Good public universities in Virginia is another good reason why FAIRFAX is popular as high school students more choices: University of Virgina, William & Mary, Virgina Tech, James Madison etc vs University of Maryland College Park. Hope the Above Info Helps!

I want to play the piano in restaurants for entertainment.?
    Question:
I am a pianist looking for a restaurant in which I may play and entertain. If there are any restaurants in the Fairfax/Burke or around zip code 22032 in Virginia please let me know.

    Answer:
This is interesting...since I do reside in DC on occasion. I would think there are some mood appropiate places you could find work playing background piano if you can pass an audition first. Perhaps STARLAND CAFE would be a good place to inquire since it is ran and owned by a well known musician/songwriter named Bill Danoff who wrote and co wrote several hit songs in the Seventies. And I am sure there are numerous other piano bar type ventures that one can inquire to in the general DC regions. Perhaps you can make a demo recording and mail it out to various establishments that have that kind of set-up.
