advice for driving on interstates in USA?
    Question:
Hi all, my wife and me are off to the USA in 2 weeks to visit family, and we're renting a car. Could you give me some tips and advice for driving on the interstates ? We're staying at a hotel for 1 night in Charlotte then taking to I-77 north from NC to Bluefield Virginia the next day. Im a lil worried about missing the turn for the hotel and being unable to turn around. I have driven in the USA before but only on regular highways Any advice you folks could give me would be great . Thanks

    Answer:
U.S. Interstates for the most part are limited access roads. This means you get on by a ramp, and off by a ramp and therre are no intersections ect. If you miss your off ramp, go to the next one, get off, cross over the interstate and get back on the other way. There are a very few instances where you can't get right back on the other way because there's no on-ramp. To be sure, just as you're approaching your off ramp, look across the interstate and see if there's an on ramp to get back on. Of course that means go to the next off-ramp. You should be aware of the mile marker of your intended exit off the interstate. Most U.S. interstates have what are called 'mile markers' that keep you informed of exactly where you are. If you're getting off at mile marker 275 and your at mile marker 245 you have 30 miles to go. Don't worry, if you get messed up, go to a gas station and ask. My only caution would be, if you suddenly realise you're stuck in the wrong lane or something, don't get panicky and make a rash move, just keep driving, miss your turn or exit, turn around, and give it another try. Watch your fuel gauge. Lastly I guess I'd have to say, it's occured where a foreiner got lost, got panicky, and opened their door or window to a badguy. If you find you're in a bad area and you're getting scared, drive until you're out of that bad area, then ask directions at a gas station. It's OK to not open your window to someone that might be have criminal intent.

What is West Virginia really like?
    Question:
Please only serious answers from residents or visitors. I'm interested in Charleston or Bluefield areas. I love the outdoors (camping, hiking, rafting, hotsprings) and would like to know if these are good places to visit/live.

    Answer:
It's a very rugged state, and has mountains and beautiful scenery. Some parts are very poor. If you're going to travel into those very rural areas and camp or fish or hunt......mind your manners and remember NO hilbilly or "sex with your sister" kind of jokes. Some (very few) bars can be rough.....do NOT mess with the locals. However, that being said.....I LOVE West Virginia! My experiences with the state are limited to the southern and southeastern areas. When you get off the highways, many areas have no lights on the roads.,...and there are no street signs at many intersections so getting lost can be easy sometimes. Go...have a great trip.....the people are usually friendly and down to earth and just enjoy yourself.

Paulownia trees in southern West Virginia!?
    Question:
Is anyone growing Paulownia trees in southern WV or VA? I've got 4 small tree-lings (one year+, about a foot high), with high hopes of giant trees and lots of flowers... Our weather here in the mountains (1/2 hour from Bluefield) is weird- late April.May killing frosts & snow, lots of rain, etc... Any help will be appreciated! If these work we might put in more to replace trees that were downed by the 2001 & 2002 floods. And if anyone's looking for a "test garden" for wildflowers, sunflowers, sculpture that kids can play on, etc., we've got the place - Landgraff, WV!

    Answer:
They do grow fast. I had one that got 8' tall in two years. I dug it out. They can be VERY weedy trees. A friend got many root sprouts from one she had. They are weeds in the local area. I'm in Southern California. I'm sure they would do well for you. Is it zone 8 in your area? The late frosts here are no problem for them. Perhaps something else would be just as good, like a Japanese pagoda tree or a mulberry? I just don't like the idea of planting invasive plants.

does anyone know of any volleyball camps ?
    Question:
near bluefield, west virginia. start after july 4th and end before august?

    Answer:
I would do a websearch on colleges in your area. Most schools that have a volleyball program will have a summer camp during that time. Also you could search under Nike, they have a bunch throughout the summer. Finally I would look at the USVBA. They may have links for other camps. Good luck and keep playing....it is a great sport and only gets better the more you know.

In Virginia, what do these religious displays mean?
    Question:
From where I live, in Marion, to Bluefield and maybe beyond there and other areas, there are displays of three-crosses side-by-side in various places that are visible from the highway. It's like the crucifixion crosses. According to my mom, some preacher went around with some people and put these displays up back in the 70s in order to make a religious statement. What statement was he trying to make? It would be really great if you can tell me who the preacher was too, but it's ok if you don't. I may be incorrect about it being in the 70s, it could have been years before then. BTW, I think I might have found the answer after searching the web. Take a look here: http://www.christiancrosses.org/History.htm Yes, I'm most certain that my link is the answer.

    Answer:
He was reminding us of the crucifixion of Jesus between two thieves. Jesus died to pay for our sins.

Poll: Do you ever wish your community was more diverse?
    Question:
I use to live in Charleston WV which had plenty of diversity. After I married my wife about 2007 we moved to southern West Virginia where there isn't much diversity near by. We live in Montcalm. Most of the diversity is in Bluefield. I had good friends of other races and many enemies also. Sometimes diversity causes problems but I think its worth it. I get really bored when there isn't other races in my life. I am not here to hate other people who are not like me. I find that a little silly, don't you? There is an African American Pastor, Mel Hoover and his wife Rose at a Unitarian Universal Congregation on the west side of Charleston WV that I loved to death. He was intelligent, kind and you can't help not to like somebody like that. He spoke one time about racism even at the Unitarian Church and I thought that was cool to be courageous to bring that perspective up during his speech he spoke on Martin Luther King Jr Day. He talked about the bullets of hate that killed Mr. King. And I thought he did a great job. I really miss him. I haven't talked to him since I been to that church in 2006 or 2007. Do you ever wish your communities or more communities was happily mixed with diversity? Its all about respect. Nobody should have to put up with loud music at odd hours or anytime. Not all people try to offend others. Sure there are ignorant people. They are everywhere from the country to the city. You just have to deal with it the best you can.

    Answer:
I understand what you are talking about Mike. I'm originally from Hurley, VA which isn't far from where you are now. The lack of diversity is stifling. I live in a more diverse area now and I love it. I really love going to Atlanta. Diversity is a wonderful thing. We all have more in common than we have differences.
