Is Arlington, Virginia a safe place to live in?
    Question:
I'm planning to live in Arlington; as I'm a candidate for working at the Smithsonian Institution in NW DC. I may also be lecturing at Georgetown University and studying at the Library of Congress, Dumbarton Oaks, etc. My question is: Are these places safe to live and work in? How safe are they? BTW, what are the advantages and disadvantages of living there? Please explain...

    Answer:
I live in Arlington, and visit DC often, and can provide the following guidance: --Arlington is a safe place to live. It has some crime, generally from folks from DC who cross the river, but on the whole it is a nice place to live and to raise a family. It's also a good place for young singles, with lots of good restaurants, shopping, and hang-outs aimed at them. --The Library of Congress, and all of Capitol Hill, are heavily patrolled and safe. Go some distance beyond and you'll run into more iffy neighborhoods. --Dunbarton Oaks is in Georgetown, a very ritzy area. It's safe. --The Smithsonian Museums on and near the Mall are all in safe areas. No need for concern. --Georgetown University is also quite safe. About the only other advice I'll add is that despite all of these areas being safe, it's always good to be street-smart. Know where you are. Don't flash large amounts of money. Don't walk by yourself late at night through unfamiliar areas. Don't leave your keys in your car. In short, use common sense and you'll be fine!

What are the advantages and disadvantages in living in Arlington, Virginia?
    Question:
I heard it's an affluent county that is near to many affluent areas like Fairfax county, NW quadrant and Montgomery county; not to mention Alexandria and Loudoun. I've also known that it is very safe...yet still, I've only been there once and there's a probability I might move there. Being a So Cal resident (who spent many years of his life in Orange County), what are the pro's and cons regarding moving to Arlington?? Is Rosslyn a good place?? Please explain...

    Answer:
Advantages: Very safe (I'm a woman and I walk around at night). Lots of good restaurants, shopping, etc. Can walk everywhere. Easy Metro ride into DC proper. Close to Georgetown (if you're on the Orange line). Close to Pentagon City mall (if you're on the Blue/Yellow lines). Lots of apartments are very accessible to Metro. I live a few Metro stops from Rosslyn - it's a great area. Very convenient to the Metro (Blue and Orange). Walking distance to Georgetown, where there are fantastic restaurants, shopping, bike paths, etc. Easy trip into the District. Most apartments in that area have parking, if you have a car. Disadvantages: Housing is insanely expensive - although maybe not for a current SoCal resident. Lots of preppy people (not super diverse in most areas). Some parts of Arlington are NOT Metro-accessible. Overall, I recommend - email if you have questions. Good luck with your move!

I was told my case should posted online at the court website, how can I find it?! Virginia, Arlington?
    Question:
I was charged with misdemeanor class 1, in Arlington, Virginia , then someone told me to find out more about it before you go to court check your court web site!!! but I can't find it, do anyone know if this is right fisrt? then where should I go to find a such thing online?!?

    Answer:
Information is available from the Virginia Courts Case Information System. You just need to know the jurisdiction where the case is being heard (Arlington), and whether it is general district or circuit court. (For the first hearing on a misdemeanor, it is most likely general district). Then just enter your name, and you should be able to access the case information, which includes the charge and hearing schedule, among other information.

Is Alexandria and arlington in Virginia good places to live?
    Question:
If not tell me which places in the area of northern virginia that are.

    Answer:
How much are you willing to fork out for rent? If the skies the limit then live in Fairfax, Burke, Reston or Herndon. These are very nice areas in Northern Virginia with good schools. Alexandria has some "suspect" areas that I would not venture in day or night. Arlington is okay if you want to live close to the Pentagon, D.C., Crystal City, etc. Depends on what you're looking for. We stayed in Fairfax because of the schools and it was central to a lot of conveniences and shopping. Contact a Real Estate agent if you want the good scoop. Long and Foster is a good one. Good luck finding a new home!

How did Virginia get Arlington back from Washington D.C?
    Question:
What is the history behind Virginia getting Arlington, when it appears to have been part of the original plan and compromise to create Washington D.C. out of Virginia and maryland?

    Answer:
Basically, the federal government decided it was never going to use the land provided by Virgnia and gave it back in 1846. Here's the full story, per the wikipedia: Once part of Fairfax County in the Colony of Virginia, the area that contains Arlington County was ceded to the new U.S. government by the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1791, the U.S. Congress formally established the limits of the federal territory that would be the nation's capital as a square of 10 miles (16 km) on a side, the maximum area permitted by Article I, Section 8, of the United States Constitution. However, the legislation that established these limits contained a clause that prohibited the federal government from locating any offices within the portion of the territory that Virginia had ceded. During 1791 and 1792, Andrew Ellicott led a team of surveyors that determined the boundaries of the federal territory. The team placed along the boundaries forty markers that were approximately one mile from each other. Fourteen of these markers were in Virginia. When Congress moved to the new District of Columbia in 1801, it enacted legislation that divided the District into two counties: the county of Washington, which lay on the east side of the Potomac River, and the county of Alexandria, which lay on the west side of the River. Alexandria County contained the present area of Arlington County, then mostly rural, and the settled town of Alexandria (now "Old Town" Alexandria), a port located on the Potomac River in the southeastern part of the area of the present City of Alexandria. Residents of Alexandria County had expected the federal capital's location would result in land sales and the growth of commerce. Instead the county found itself struggling to compete with the town of Georgetown, a port located in Washington County adjacent to the capital city (Washington City). As the federal government could not establish any offices in the County, and as the economically important Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (C&O Canal) on the north side of the Potomac River favored Georgetown, Alexandria's economy stagnated. It didn't help that some Georgetown residents opposed federal efforts to maintain the Alexandria Canal, which connected the C&O Canal in Georgetown to Alexandria's port. Moreover, as residents of the District of Columbia, Alexandria's citizens had no representation in Congress and could not vote in federal elections. The town of Alexandria had been a port and market for the slave trade. With growing talk of abolishing slavery in the nation's capital, some Alexandrians feared the local economy would suffer if the federal government took this step. At the same time, there arose in Virginia an active abolitionist movement that created a division on the question of slavery in Virginia's General Assembly (subsequently, during the Civil War, Virginia's division on the slavery issue led to the formation of the state of West Virginia by the most anti-slavery counties). Pro-slavery Virginians recognized that Alexandria County could provide two new representatives who favored slavery in the General Assembly if the County returned to the Commonwealth. As a result, a movement grew to separate Alexandria County from the District of Columbia. After a referendum, the county's residents petitioned the U.S. Congress and the Virginia legislature to permit the County to return to Virginia. The area was retroceded to Virginia on July 9, 1846. In 1852, the independent city of Alexandria was incorporated from a portion of Alexandria County. This led to occasional confusion, as the adjacent county and municipal entities continued to share the name of "Alexandria". Alexandria County renamed itself in 1920 as Arlington County. The new name was borrowed from Arlington National Cemetery.

where can i buy a turducken in or near arlington virginia?

    Answer:
You will probably have better luck ordering it online if it's not too late. Hickory Farms sells them but since I've never ordered I can't vouch for the quality or taste. Locally I don't know for sure but I would start with Balducci's, formerly Sutton Place Gourmet, http://www.balduccis.com. There are several around here. If you can't order it from them try another gourmet shop or a local butcher. I hope you find it I've often thought of trying it myself. Good luck.
