Should I go to Ohio State or Umass Amherst or George Washington University?
    Question:
For next year I'm going to West Virginia University, but maybe for only a semester. Ohio State offered me their fall semester 09 and umass amherst offered me their spring semester 09. My parents want me to go to george washington but I don't really want to go. Which one should I end up going to?

    Answer:
I will be attending Umass Amherst this fall, but I think George Washington is a good school. It depends how much you are willing to pay. I would have to say GWU is very expensive, and you can definitely get a good education in another institution. I have visited WVU, and I did not like the surrounding area.

    Amherst or W&M or U.Va.?
    Question:
Let's say I've been admitted to Amherst College and the College of William & Mary. Which should I choose? Now let's say I've been admitted to Amherst College and the University of Virginia? Or all three? (In reality I've been accepted to Amherst only, but I want to know in advance of this week when I hear from the other two.) By the way, I just got into William & Mary, too, right now.

    Answer:
University of Virginia's incoming freshman had an average GPA of 4.07 w/ a 37% acceptance rate. It also placed on the following lists on princetonreview.com Best College Library Jock Schools Best in the Southeast Best Value College Amherst on the other hand, I'm not sure about the GPA, but I know they had a 19% acceptance rate last year so REALLY consider yourself one of the select FEW. Congratulaitons, BTW. Also, Amherst made the following lists on princetonreview.com Best Overall Academic Experience for Undergraduates Professors Get High Marks School Runs Like Butter Best in the Northeast

Am I related to Susannah Martin?
    Question:
I was looking through our family records and found the following information: Henry Martin B: Abt. 1672 Amherst, Virginia D: 11 May 1755 Albemarle, Virginia Spouse: Mrs. Ann Martin B: Abt. 1675 Amherst, Virginia Is there anyone who can tell me more information about Henry and his parents or Ann and her parents? We have no records concerning Henry's parents' names and there isn't much information available about Susannah's grandchildren. Any help would be much appreciated. *Yes, G S has the right Susannah. I'm looking for a link between her and my ancestor Henry Martin.

    Answer:
Heres some info I found, maybe the wrong person but anyway, hope I helped. Susannah Martin (baptized September 30, 1621 – July 19, 1692) was a woman and a victim of the Salem witch trials. Martin was the fourth daughter, and youngest child, of Richard North and Joan (Bartram) North. Her mother died when she was a child. Her stepmother was named Ursula Scott. She was baptized in Olney, Buckinghamshire, England on September 30, 1621. Her family first moved to Salisbury, Massachusetts around 1639. On August 11, 1646 at Salisbury, Susannah married the widower George Martin, a blacksmith with whom she had eight children, including daughter Jane, the great-great-great-great grandmother of Chester A. Arthur. Site:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susannah_Martin

I am looking into these colleges: -University of Massachusetts, Amherst -Boston College -Worcester Polytechnic Institute -University of Virginia -George Washington University

    Answer:
UMass Amherst is probably a good target. I don't know about WPI. UVA is unlikely. GW and BC are probably reaches. Good luck

    Getting in?
    Question:
I am currently a junior in a Massachusetts Public High School. I have a 2.85 gpa(got screwed sophmore year with absences, but I have a 3.7 through my junior year, and should bring it over 3 again) A 3.25 weighted gpa Take all honors and APs available 2150 on SATs, taking it again(hoping to break 2200) Taking 2 APs this year and planning on taking 3 more next year Top 30% of my class 3 Varsity Sports, captain of 2, Math team, environmental club, and I have some community service under my belt My question is could i get into these schools and how likely Reach: University of Virginia(Reach/Dream school) Brandeis Wake Forest Penn State Clemson NC State UMass Amherst West Virginia University Rutgers new brunswick Virginia Tech Is there any thing I can do to increase my chances also

    Answer:
If you continue to bring your grades up, that one poor year won't necessarily hold you back, if the rest of your app is strong. Strong SAT scores and good recommendations will also help quite a bit. Make sure you write some strong essays, perhaps using one to highlight your most recent grades, and show that they are who you are, not that one bad year - and ideally, have the recommendations to back that up. The sports look great, as does sports in combo with the two clubs you listed - sports and math, golden. As for the schools you listed, based on the fact that you'll continue on an upward trend re: grades: University of Virginia - reach Brandeis - reach Wake Forest - reach Penn State - reach/fit Clemson - reach NC State - reach, wicked reach UMass Amherst - fit West Virginia University - maybe backup school Rutgers - fit Virginia Tech - fit That's saying that you'll bring your overall GPA up as high as you can, and that you'll be able to show them that who you are, now, is the true you - that your sophomore year was an abberation. So I strongly suggest you pick some good backup schools, just in case. Based on your list, and your grades, etc., you may also want to have a look at Boston University (unless that's too urban), U Delaware, Auburn, James Madison, Duquesne, maybe George Mason, and Tulane. Tulane has a great name, but post-Katrina, is still sort of looking to fill seats with qualified students. I consider it an opportunity.

    College Chances?
    Question:
I am currently a junior in a Massachusetts Public High School. Answer:
Very good SATs - keep up the clear thinking Top 40% - not so hot - that might hurt your chances You are pretty good for all the "fit" schools. I think you are good for all three "reach" schools too. Why don't you invest $14.95 into the US News Premium service and see what they come up with - there are some excellent schools out there that might really like to see you. For example, one of my daughters had a dynamite SAT, but not so hot ranking - she got a fantastic scholarship to Rhodes College in Memphis and has just been accepted for grad school to Colombia and Harvard. I'm not so sure about the community service stuff - we don't give it much attention.

guy gone away, and i can't forget :'(?

the best way to get into a good college?
    Question:
i'm looking to get into yale, stanford, harvard, virginia, brown, princeton or amherst i play lacrosse and i'm a rising freshman so what is the best high school advice for me to get into any of those schools best answer awarded

    Answer:
Get crazy good at your sports. CRAZY good. Also maintain a 4.0 in school as well as being very involved in extra curricular. Find some exotic race in your immediate back ground (this is terrible but true. Standard white boy or asian doesn't work) In addition choose an odd major when applying to those colleges... Write an amazing essay about some sort of amazing thing you truly. Have an absolutely stellar interview where you are shown to be incredibly interesting and incredibly intelligent without being incredibly annoying. If you are missing even one of those things your chances goes down drastically. I am sorry.

What is the tuition of these colleges?

which univerty should i travel 2 study at for a semester abroad?
    Question:
please help me chose from these universities... the only problem is that i can't go to japan bec it's for a whole year not just a semester and that the university in italy doesn't have my major ( mass communication :marketing) ... please tell me why do u recommend a certian university and i promise i will chose a best answer . i live in Egypt by the way You can choose to study abroad in one of the universities listed below: United States James Madison University, Virginia Penn State University Portland State University , Oregon University of California University of Colorado, Boulder University of Massachusetts , Amherst University of St Thomas , Minnesota University of Virginia, Charlottesville University of Washington , Seattle Washington College , Maryland Canada Concordia University Simon Fraser University, Vancouver Europe University of East London Bocconi University, Milan St Andrews University, Scotland Asia Kansai Gaidai University, Osaka Middle East American University of Beirut

    Answer:
If you are simply basing this on your major, you can't go wrong with places like Penn State (excellent reputation, good school), UMass, or Concordia. However, one thing to keep in mind is that the weather at some of these schools will be very, very different from what you are used to, even for a semester. If you want to stay warm, you are probably going to want to look towards U of Wash (Seattle) and California, even Virginia. Minnesota gets cold early, and usually has snow by the end of October. Colorado is a wonderful school, but again, it can get a fair amount of snow. Vancouver is a wonderful city, as is Milan and London. Hope this helped! Good luck!

    Answer:
Do you actually have a point – any kind of point – with this litany? McVeigh, for example, was executed. What are you asking?

How politically liberal or conservative are the following schools?
    Question:
On a scale of 1-10, 1 being ultra-conservative, 5 being moderate, and 10 being ultra-liberal...please rank the following schools: harvard yale princeton brown u-penn columbia co rnell dartmouth johns hopkins emory vanderbilt amherst swarthmore williams george town william and mary lehigh carnegie mellon u-virginia boston college notre dame northwestern u-chicago u-michigan wake forest unc at chapel hill brandeis tufts

    Answer:
In general, the large majority of colleges are 'officially' neither liberal nor conservative. But the large majority of faculty in American universities identify themselves as moderate or liberal. Only a small minority identify themselves as conservative. (There was a recent New York Times article about this). So, if you mean, is the atmosphere at these schools more liberal or conservative, then I would rank almost all of them about a 7 or 8. The ones in the South, like William and Mary are probably a little more moderate, about 5 or so.

Which of these schools have good physics programs?
    Question:
It's my senior year in high school, and I'm looking into colleges. I'm specifically looking for schools with good science programs, especially in physics. In an effort to cut down my current list of 37 prospective schools, I'm looking for information on which of the following schools have good physics programs. Also, feel free to mention schools not on the list (Please avoid the obvious, like MIT or Caltech). I'm especially interested in knowing which Ivies (marked by asterisks below) have good physics programs. Amherst Brown* Carnegie Mellon Columbia* Cornell* Dartmouth* Duke Emory Fordham Ge orgetown Harvard* Johns Hopkins Princeton* Rutgers Stanford Syracuse Tulane Univers ity of Chicago University of Virginia University of Pennsylvania* University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Vanderbilt Washington University in St. Louis Yale*

    Answer:
I would grab a copy of the US News report on universities to give you some further information. But I will try to give you a little more information. I would guess most good schools will have solid physics departments. And there are different fields of physics, where some schools may be good at one field and other good at others. You have a lot of schools on there I have no knowledge of in physics. But here's how I would break up the schools: Best of the Best: Caltech, MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford (yes, I know, you didn't want the first two, but you can't talk about the best of the best without the best) Very Very Good: Yale, Brown, Cornell, Chicago Other top schools you might want to look at: U Texas-Austin, U Michigan, U Illinois, U Maryland, U Colorado (in atomic physics), Gatech, UC Berkley, U Arizona, U New Mexico (they have a lot of quantum information physics) The rest of them I don't know that much about, so I will just list the ones I have heard of in physics, so have reason to believe they would be solid: CMU, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Johns Hopkins, U Virginia, Penn, UNC, Washington The others I have never heard of in physics. That is not to say that they aren't strong. You should realize that I work in atomic physics and quantum information, so I have more exposure to that specific field of physics than others. The top two groups will be very strong in everything. The ones I suggested are usually good across the board. The ones that have a specific focus that I know of, I pointed out. I hope that helps. Good luck with picking a school and your applications!

What should I do about these sat II scores?
    Question:
I took 3 sat subject tests in June and here are my scores. Math level II: 580 Physics:590 U.S. History: 690 My question is how much will these scores factor in. Would I have anything to benifit/ loose from sending these scores. My regular sat scores from may were 650 reading 630 math 660 writing I don't think those are too bad but I'm going to get a study book and take it again in the fall. Anyone know of any good review books? I was leaning towards princeton review or barrons. Do I need to take the subject tests again? I realy don't want to unless it is absolutely necessary. Colleges I'm looking at are: Boston College North Eastern Williams College Holy Cross University of Virginia Davidson University Of North Carolina Chapel Hill William and Mary Cornell University Stanford Umass Amherst any thoughts as to which ones I have a shot at getting into are welcome. Thanks

    Answer:
You are applying to some of the most difficult schools to get into in the country. Unless you have an incredible GPA, your SAT scores are going to prevent you from getting into nearly all of these except for UMass and Northeastern. Holy Cross is SAT Optional but you must be in the top 10% of your class to get in. I would suggest adding a few more safeties that you like.

    College Chances?

    Answer:
Well, from your resume, you look like you have a very good chance with most of the colleges listed with the exception of Virginia because it is very competitive. Just keep doing what you are doing now, participate in sports, volunteer, and maintain a high gpa, then no worries! Anyway, booster of confidence, since you're already break through to the 2100 mark, you are looking at getting scholarships from alot of those, esp from Penn St., NCS, WVU, and Clemson, so good luck.
