    To add to Julie's comments. We are a waterfront community resting on the shores of the Potomac. George Washington is evident throughout the historic core. Come on a Saturday and enjoy our Farmer's Market at the Market Square aka City Hall (6am-11)..Check out the Carlyle House across the street on Fairfax. Stop and have the areas best Crab cakes at The Wharf (their Bloody Mary's are good too!). Head down to the Torpedo Factory and check out the various artists lofts. Then suggest taking a 45 minute cruise on the Potomac. Head north on Cameron Street and stop by the quaint shops on Cameron as you wind your way past Gadsby's Tavern and George Washington's home towards Christ Church. Check out the 200 year old homes along the way. Check out the civil war memorial in the Church Cemetery. Walk two blocks north on Washington and visit the Lee Fendal House (aka Robert E. Lee's boyhood home and Harry Lighthorse Lee's homes). Head back towards King Street and walk the street and decide where to eat for dinner! (My favorite past time!). There are too many choices to mention. Suffice it to say, we are finally getting some gastronomic respect with some of the finest restaurants in town. Restaurant Eve; Farrah Olivia; Vermillion are but a few. Also, we have the original home of the best burgers in town at Five Guys! If you are in town for our own City Celebration of Independence, walk down to Oronoco Bay Park and listen to the Alexandria Symphony do a host of family favorites. Hang out later and enjoy our fire works on July 12th.

    I'm moving to Alexandria next month and I want to know which areas are the best for residential living. I'm trying to avoid areas that have crime problems and bad housing.

    if you have a family with small children, i would recommend living in fairfax county where the school district is one of the BEST rated nationally. there are many areas of alexandria that are great for residential living. it really depends on what your needs are and what your budget is. are you looking to rent or own? is it important for you to have public transportation? rent - if you're renting, you'll find that between the nice modern building and the older buildings, the rent will differ about 100-200 bucks. pay a little more to live in a nicer area! i would suggest crystial city and old town. buying - go out a little further to Springfield which is directly south of Alexandria. it's primarily residential neighborhoods... check out www.apartments.com to find an apartment. you will be able to tell if the location is a "good" location by reading more about it!     you could look into an extended stay place perhaps out in the western part of fairfax county or maybe even the north-eastern part of Prince William county, those are both well within a 25 miles range. You mgiht have better luck looking in Maryland though for 100 dollars a night.

    Everytime I go there there is no assigned parking there for the metro. The sports are only for the AMC theater across the street and they will tow your vechile if you part there. Now nobody is allowed to park there. What is up with that and where are you supposed to park to use that station?     Do you know the taste of a Dixie Pig Barbecue Sandwich (from Alexandria, Virginia)?

    I am looking for a sandwich with the appearance, taste, texture of the barbecue sandwiches that used to be sold by the Dixie Pig Barbecue restaraunts of Alexandria, Va. Dixie Pig had a couple locations... Beacon Hill and also old town Alex. The sandwiches were a pulled pork type as best I recall... but I never saw them barbecue anything there as I remember. It seemed they just pulled out a plastic bucket and grabbed an ice cream scoop and dropped a dollup on each hamburger bun and served it to you. They were great though... maybe it was the sauce... I dunno. I am looking for a recipe, a taste, maybe another restaraunt, anywhere, that serves a sandwich like that. Anyone out there remember this one? Thanks!

    I don't know about Dixie Pig, but the Virgnia Barbecue Review says that Ben's Whole Hog in Manassas is the best around! Give them a try! Here is the review: We had suspected long before we actually found it, that there must be a good barbecue joint in Manassas. We finally found it earlier this summer, and what a discovery. I will stick my neck out here and say that it in my estimation, is THE BEST in the Washington metro area. Why? Because the meat is so slow-cooked, patiently, lovingly and respectfully--and it shows. Four visits have concentrated on the pulled pork sandwich and two sides--we haven't yet had the ribs, but we hear they are terrific too.

    Has anyone recently dined aboard the Dandy boat in Alexandria, Virginia?

    Just wondering how was your experience and would it be a suitable place for having a 50th wedding anniversary party that has mostly older folks? Just want to know how accessible it is for people with walking difficulties and if the food was good?

    Answer:
    I have dined recently on both the Dandy and the Odyssey. The Dandy is a nice ship and the food was good and plentiful as buffets go. We also did a Sunday Brunch trip, which was lovely and much more reasonable. Parking is located right next to the gang plank but can get full quick as the previous writer indicated. There are several other parking garages within two blocks of the ship. The music was piano and singers and frankly was lovely and perfect for a 50th Anniversary party. The Odyssey was similar, but picks up folks from the Waterfront in DC which IS a major pain for parking and access. They have, however, provided an alternative to pick up at the new National Harbor, just across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Maryland (there is a specific exit right off the bridge) that is hassle free and cheap. If you choose the Odyssey, it is more expensive as the dinner cruise goes, but the difference is you can easily see the sights as it is glass enclosed during poor weather. Neither is fun when its freezing out! But the Odyssey is a better choice as you can see more. Dandy is a better value in my opinion though! Hope this helps!
