Does anyone know anything about the Cedar City, Utah area? Question: I am currently being forced to relocate from the East coast to around Cedar City Utah area for a corporation. My wife and 18 year old son are going with me.
What my major question is, is what is the place like? IE, humidity, weather, possible job situations for my wife and son, cultures and culture shocks, do's and dont's, traffic, etc.
Anything you can give me will be of great help. Thanks.
Answer:
You are really lucky to be "forced" into such a beautiful area! Cedar City's population is about 30,000 with much of the population connected to a small university, Southern Utah University (SUU).
*Humidity- Very little, to none at all. Cedar City is a high desert, and humidity is non-existent in the summer months. During the winter, Cedar City averages about 6 feet of snow, but it is extremely dry snow.
*Weather- Cedar City enjoys all 4 seasons. By this I mean cold & snow in the winter, hot and dry in the summer, mild in spring & fall. Relatively, Cedar City gets very little precipitation, with most of it coming in the winter and spring.
*The job situation fluxuates with the university's schedule- during the summer, there are many job opportunities available, especially for your son, but during the fall there will not be an open job in town. Your wife may experience the same general trend, depending on what industry she works in, and how much experience she has.
*Culture- there will be 2 factors in adjusting to Cedar City: 1. Small town- there just is not a lot to do if you are used to large cities. There are plenty of recreational activities available, but only a few movie theaters, restaurants, etc. Most stores open late and close early, and very few are open on Sundays, which leads to factor #2- LDS (or Mormon) culture. As mentioned before, the town essentially closes on Sunday. Religion is a major factor in most citizens' lives, and it's likely that you will hear about it as you explore town.
*Do's and Dont's- Really, the biggest Do is to remember that it's a small town. If you fly into a rage at the store, it's likely that the whole town will know in a matter of hours. Treat people civilly, and they will return the favor- if you are nice to people here, they will be VERY nice in return. But the reverse is also true.
*Traffic- Not a factor at all. Ever. Cedar City was recently ranked as the city with the fastest commute in the nation. There just is not enough of a population base to make this a factor. The ONLY time traffic is an issue is during a heavy snow storm, but that is not because of volume, but because some people just don't know how to drive in it.
Here are some web sites about the local area, (the Chamber of Commerce web site is pretty good) and feel free to email me if you have any other questions or if I can help in any way.
