Questions Possibly Related to Canyon Rim, Utah

What's the best way to get to the Grand Canyon?
    Question:
Hello - i've been to the Canyon South Rim before by flying into Phoenix and driving through Sedona,etc... Is it quicker or easier to get there from Vegas or another route (Utah or NM?) or is Phoenix really the best? I'm thinking of taking a trip to see the North Rim and maybe Bryce Canyon which is why i'm asking. Also any suggestions for photogrpahy and stops in or near the Canyon area would be appreciated :) thanks for any help ! PS (the trip would be in spring or summer) (also - which airport will provide the shortest drive)

    Answer:
If you were going to the South Rim again, than Phoenix (Sky Harbor) is definitely the closest major airport (about an hour shorter drive to the South Rim than from Las Vegas). However, if you are planning on visiting the North Rim and Bryce, than you would definitely want to fly into Las Vegas. From Las Vegas to the North Rim is 264 miles and will likely take 4-5 hours drive time (much if it is on smaller state highways, not interestates). From Las Vegas to Bryce Canyon National Park is 249 miles and about a 3-4 hour drive. And finally driving directly between Bryce and the North Rim is 157 miles and takes about 2.5 - 3 hours. So you could basically do a big Bryce-North Rim-LV circle which would total about 650-700 miles. As others have noted, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is closed until mid-May. As long as you are going through that area, you should definitely stop at Zion National Park which is right along the LV-North Rim route. Zion is beautiful, has some great photography options, and a wide range of hiking trails. I personally like it better than Bryce and almost as much as the Grand Canyon (though in different ways). As far as photography goes... North Rim - The North Rim does not have as many developed overlooks as the South, but the few it does have are impressive. The view from the lodge area is not bad, but the nearby Cape Royale overlook (featuring Angels Window and Wotan's throne) is even more impressive (especially at sunset and sunrise). If you have a high clearance vehicle, you can drive an hour along a dirt road to the east of the lodge to Point Sublime - many people consider this to be the single most impressive rim view of the whole canyon. Bryce - There are a number of rim-side overlooks to the southeast of the lodge that provide the classic landscape view with all the rock hoodoos, etc. I would also recommend that you hike down into the canyon too... the relatively short Navajo trail will take you down into some impressive slot canyons (like 'Wall Street') where you can get some neat shots. Zion - The Weeping Wall (seep springs on a cliff) and Emerald Pools (larger waterfall) are both scenic and easy to get too. If you don't mind hiking (and are not afraid of hights) than doing the classic hike up to Angel's Landing with provide some dramatic views looking down the canyon (a popular shot for posters and postcards). If you have the time and inclination, going further east from the North Rim (along 89A to Page) will take to some interesting and very photogenic places that are quite different from the spots above. The Vermillion Cliffs are huge reddish cliffs bordering a desolate desert landscape and at Lees Ferry there are some intersting balancing rock formations, a chance to get right down by the river itself, and an impressive historic 1920s iron bridge spanning Marble Canyon. At Page, there is Lake Powell (which you really need a boat or a boat tour to appreciate) and the famous Antelope slot canyons which are just outside of town and can be toured for a small fee (you will recognize the photos of this place). One other note, while there are lodging options at all of these places (I especially like the historic park lodges), you might also want to consider staying in Kanab, Utah which is centrally located between Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon and makes a great base of operations for the area. If you want to stay at the historic lodges inside the park, they are all ran by Xanterra and you can make reservations online (see link below). Lastly, recommended places to eat in the area include Nedras Too and the Rocking V in Kanab, Zion Pizza and Noodle Company in Zion and Jacob Lake Lodge (north of the North Rim) which has great homemade cookies. It is a great area - have fun!
