  • City Description

Brigham City is a city in Box Elder County, Utah, United States. The population was 17,412 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Box Elder County. It lies on the western slope of the Wellsville Mountains, a branch of the Wasatch Range at the western terminus of Box Elder Canyon. Brigham City saw most of its growth during the 1950s and 1960s, but has seen a struggling economy and stagnating growth since then. It is currently the headquarters of ATK Thiokol, the company that created the solid rocket boosters for the Space Shuttle. Mormon pioneer William Davis first explored the Brigham City area in 1850. He returned with his family and others a year later to create permanent homes. Brigham Young directed Lorenzo Snow to create a self-sufficient city there in 1853. Snow directed both religious and political affairs in the settlement, eventually naming it Box Elder in 1855. Brigham Young gave his last public sermon there in 1877 shortly before his death and the name of the town was changed to Brigham City after the church president. In 1864, the cooperative movement began in earnest with the creation of a mercantile co-op store. Other industries were added, and the Brigham City

Where is a nice suburb of Salt Lake City?
    Question:
I'm thinking about moving to the Salt Lake City area ... I have a number of relatives in Utah, but they are in smaller towns (Brigham City, Cedar City ...) I want to live in a bigger city for now because I think it would be best for my career. I'm looking for somewhere out of Salt Lake City that is a reasonable driving distance, with good schools, nice, larger homes, and opportunities for recreation, shopping and dining. A good place to raise a family basically. I prefer somewhere that the houses are newer. Where would this be and how much are the homes?

    Answer:
Sandy is the nicest suburb of SLC. Nice homes start at about $200K. 23rd best place to live in the country. #1 in Utah. (2006) Cottonwood Heights scored well in 2007. Much more expensive than Sandy though...

How did the city of St. George in Utah get it's name?
    Question:
St. George is in South Western Utah 60 miles south of Cedar City. St. George was one of the first city's organized and collonized by Brigham Young. I'm just currious as to the origin of that city's famous name.

    Answer:
Well, Brigham was growing wine grapes, tobacco and cotton down there in St. George -- oh for the early days of Mormondom. The city's website lists two possible sources for the name of St. George: George Albert Smith, a Mormon apostle and Phillip St. George Cooke, a non-Mormon pal of Brigham Young's. You can go to the website for the whole story. Personally, I have two theories of my own: 1. St. George the Dragon Slayer. As you may know, the city of St. George is hotter than Beelzebub at a barbecue. The inhabitants wanting some relief from the oppressive heat named the city after the mythical saint who slayed the dragon that was devouring nubile princesses and threatening the water supply. They were hoping for some relief from the heat, which felt like the breath of a dragon. 2. George Washington and Babtism for the Dead. As you may know, St. George is in Washington County, which we know was named after our cherry tree chopping, first president. It follows that the county got his last name, the county seat got his first, but where did the St. part come in? It came from babtisms for the dead. The Mormons call themselves Saints and if you weren't one of them when you were alive, they'll babtize you and make you one of them after you are dead, thus making your corpse a Saint. The Saints had built a temple down in Utah's Dixie, with its cotton and tobacco fields, and one hot summer day, one or two of the local religious establishment decided to do some babtisms for the dead and realized no one had vicariously dunked the guy who crossed the Deleware, so they did and he was elevated from President to Saint. Thus St. George was born, or born again, so to speak.

Why don't conservatives question authority as much as liberals do?
    Question:
During the 60s, liberals were leading the civil rights movement, the protests against the Vietnam War, and trying to change the system. Conservatives, by definition, remained loyal to authority. ============== INTERESTING ARTICLE ON ROMNEY DURING THE 60s. SOME EXCERPTS Mr. Romney described it as “a very interesting firsthand view of a very volatile setting.” But his friends say the strikes were terrifying and reinforced their respect for authority. “The social system failed. The country came to a stop,” said Byron Hansen, another missionary and now a car dealer in Brigham City, Utah. “It affected me and I am sure it affected Mitt.” The missionaries had often met with hostility over the Vietnam War. “Are you an American?” was a common greeting, Mr. Romney recalled, followed by, “‘Get out of Vietnam! Bang!’ The door would slam.” But such opposition only hardened their hawkish views. “We felt the French were pretty weak-kneed,” Mr. Hansen said. Most of the missionaries, though, were also relieved that their service meant a draft deferment. “I am sorry, but no one was excited to go and get killed in Vietnam,” Mr. Hansen said, acknowledging, “In hindsight, it is easy to be for the war when you don’t have to worry about going to Vietnam.” Civil rights became an even more insistent issue, when boycotts and violent protests over the university’s virtually all-white sports teams broke out at away games. The Mormon Church at the time excluded blacks from full membership, considering them spiritually unfit as results of a biblical curse on the descendants of Noah’s son Ham. (During their training, a fellow missionary of Mr. Romney took notes that read: “All men were created equal — No,” followed by “Sons of Ham. ”) http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21799799/

    Answer:
Please explain to me how turning over the control of your life to the government is "questioning authority". Seriously. Liberals want to turn over every aspect of our lives (retirement, charity, health care, business proftis, energy, medical research, etc.) to the government. How can you possibly define that as "questioning authority"??????

LDS can you give some insight to these questions?
    Question:
Why is there so much archaeological evidence for the Bible, yet none for historical accounts in the Book of Mormon? How could Joseph Smith be a true prophet when he prophesied that the United States government would be overthrown in the 1800s? (History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Deseret Book Company: Salt Lake City, Utah, 1973. 5:394.) How could Brigham Young be a true prophet when he said that the moon and the sun were both inhabited? (Journal of Discourses, 24 July 1870.) Why were Mormon males of African descent not allowed in the priesthood up until 1978? I want to thank those in the religion of the LDS who have asked these question. I think it is important that we all learn from each other. I mean NO disrespect to the people that follow this religion. I would like to know. These questions are from a site I came across and there was NO answer to any of those that I've asked It it get deleted, then guess it will be deleted and it will look like they are hidding things. http://www.bibletopics.com/BibleStudy/135.htm all questions came from this site Thank you I'mjustaduck asked should have been ANSWERED

    Answer:
There are actually evidences of the Book of Mormon. See MormonEvidence.com There are many examples in the Bible where a true prophet prophesied something which did not happen as he stated. There's the example of Jonah where he prophesied to the people of Nineveh that they were to be destroyed in 40 days then God changed his mind and spared them. The prophet Ezekiel provides another example of how true prophets may err or give prophecies of uncertain accuracy. In Ezekiel chapters 26, 27, and 28, we read that Tyre (a fortified island city) would be conquered, destroyed, and plundered by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. The riches of Tyre would go to Babylon (Ezek. 26:12). Yes, Tyre was eventually destroyed, but its complete destruction apparently did not occur during the Babylonian siege, and certainly the Babylonian army did not get the riches of Tyre as has been prophesied. It is Ezekiel himself who reports this "prophetic failure." The Bible makes it clear that prophecy can be conditional and that its fulfillment can depend on the actions of human beings. This makes sense when one realizes that God's purpose is to bless mankind, not to be rigidly "correct" about everything. Predicted doom, for example, can be avoided by human repentance. If we demand that all prophecy be strictly fulfilled according to our narrow interpretation, we are likely to reject true prophets, as shown in my previous examples. The reason blacks were excluded from the priesthood had nothing to do with them or any kind of doctrine pertaining to lineage, but with the unworthiness of a white society that practiced slavery. I can accept that the policy was given by or influenced by revelation, and I can see why it may have been wise to keep it in place even after slavery was banned - again, not due to unworthiness among blacks, but due to the realities of life in a white society still struggling with the legacy of racism and slavery. In other words, it may be possible that the reason the Lord waited so long to reverse the restriction on blacks (or the reason the Church waited so long to ask the Lord for new guidance on the matter) was because that much time was needed before white society was really prepared to accept blacks as priesthood holders and thus leaders in their Church. This doesn't ease the pain for the black members who felt they were second-class members for all that time. If there is any merit to this theory - and I personally suspect there is - then we whites in the Church have an even greater responsibility than previously imagined to go the extra mile to oppose racism, repudiate past racist attitudes, and truly live up to the teachings of living and past prophets who taught that salvation is offered to all, and are all alike before God.

What do Mormons think about the damaging claims against the archeology of the book of Mormon?
    Question:
One of the most damaging claims against the archaeology of the Book of Mormon was the publication of former Brigham Young University professor Thomas Stuart Ferguson’s paper written in 1975. Ferguson founded the Department of Archaeology (later renamed Anthropology) at BYU for the sole purpose of discovering proofs of the Book of Mormon. After 25 yrs. of dedicated archaeological research, the department had nothing at all to back up the flora, fauna, topography, geography, peoples, cons, or settlements of the book, and in fact, he called the geography of the book of Mormon "fictional." In Fergusons Manuscript Unveiled (Salt Lake City: Utah Lighthouse Ministry, 1988) the reader is treated to a wealth of insights into the sheer nonexistence of Book of Mormon Antiquities. What about how the Smithsonian Institution in Washington has also added its voice against the archaeological claims of the Book of Mormon. For example, iron, steel, glass and silk weren't used in the New World before 1492 except for the occasional use of unsmelted meteoric iron)... Native copper was used in various locations in pre Columbian times, but true metallurgy was limited to southern Mexico and the Andean region, where it’s occurrence in late prehistoric times involved gold, silver, copper, and their alloys, but not iron. Or how no reputable Egyptologist or other specialist on Old World archaeology and no expert on New World prehistory has discovered or confirmed any relationship between archaeological remains in Mexico and archaeological remains in Egypt. But yet, archeologists often carry the KJVersion of the Bible…. What about that?

    Answer:
I am going to star this so all my Mormon contacts will see the question. I have a degree in history and have wondered the same thing and researched it for awhile now. It doesn't mean the religion is false it just means there is no proof to the claim at this time. I live in a Mormon area and I think they are just wonderful people and I have no problem letting them believe what they want to. I have read all of their books but I have never been able to get past the lack of archeological evidence of the Lamanites and the Nephites ever existing.

Funny or lame? Star or stale?
    Question:
A woman visiting Salt Lake City in the latter half of the 18th century sees someone that she thinks may be Brigham Young, the leader of the Mormon church. Woman: "Are you Brigham Young?" Brigham Young: "I am." Woman: "Are you the Brigham Young that is the head of the Mormon church?" Brigham Young: "I am." Woman: "Are you the Brigham Young that led the Mormons to Utah?" Brigham Young: "I am." Woman: "Are you the Brigham Young that denounces all Christian religions as false except Mormonism?" Brigham Young: "I am." About this time, the woman is beginning to lose her temper. Woman: "Are you the Brigham Young who preaches polygamy?" Brigham Young: "I am." Now she's really getting mad. Woman: "Are you the Brigham Young who has 26 wives?" Brigham Young: "I am." Then furiously, she says - Woman: "You ought to be hung!" Brigham Young: "I am."

I have read enough to know that they don't have many scruples about covering up things they don't want people to know.... hmmmm

    Answer:
I actually just read an entry on a website that relates to this. Basically, no one ever left the Mormons. In 1855, some people did, including 100 polygamist wives (possibly your ancestor?). http://www.americanheritage.com/blog/ A little more is found here: http://www.millardcounty.com/massacre.html "Another complication was created by the involvement of soldiers and Mormon women through the winter. When the soldiers left for California in the spring, nearly 100 Mormon women, anxious to escape polygamy, left with them. To inform the public of the Mormon side of this confrontation, Brigham Young had many affidavits created, charging the soldiers and non-Mormon public officials with drunkenness, gambling, sexual abuses and other irregularities." http://books.google.com/books?id=lRrWqLh6CUkC&p g=PA105&lpg=PA105&dq=1855+mormon+escape+to+california&source=web& ots=dB4nDl-3sQ&sig=XSYYl6fgqhQeY-hTLlxr0W2bRo8&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book _result&resnum=5&ct=result
