City DescriptionAlta is a town in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Salt Lake City, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 370 at the 2000 census, a slight decrease from the 1990 figure of 397.
Alta is also a ski resort that has 500,000 visitors a year. It is known for its powder skiing and its refusal to allow snowboarding.
Alta City was founded about 1870 to house miners from the Emma mine, the Flagstaff mine, and other silver mines in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Sensationally rich silver ore in the Emma mine enabled its owners to sell the mine at an inflated price to British investors in 1871. The subsequent exhaustion of the Emma ore body led to the recall of the American ambassador to Great Britain, and Congressional hearings in Washington.
Alta is located at 40°34′51″N, 111°38′14″W (40.580916, -111.637164).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.1 square miles (10.5 km²), of which, 4.1 square miles (10.5 km²) of it is land and 0.25% is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 370 people, 67 households, and 36 families residing in the town. The population density was 91.4 people per square mile (35.3/km²). There ... Read MoreCity Contained By:- Utah

Questions Possibly Related to Alta, UtahProvided By Y! Answers
Best time to go skiing in Utah? Question: I'm planning a skiing trip to Utah. Alta, Snowbird,Solitude,Park city area.
When is the best time to avoid the big crowds, especially the college crowd?
I'm thinking of going late February or early March
Answer:
Thats a great time, as long as you avoid winter break in febuary, and spring break in March. Early March is good time, also early January is a good time---After the holidays.
I skiied out there one time in April, and the conditions were incredible. The crowds were low, and it was basically all locals. So thats always an option also.

Good time to ski in Utah? Question: What month would be best for skiing in Utah? I'm planning to go to Alta, Solitude, Snowbird area.
I want to avoid the big crowds and also have good snow.
Answer:
January, on Sundays. Sundays are the best day to go. Saturday is the WORST if you want to avoid crowds.
Also...alta and solitude are in different areas just so you know. They're in different canyons.
If you are looking for a good deal (alta and snowbird can be expenisve, and solitude can be too) try Brighton. Its at the top of the canyon past solitude, but they aren't a big resort place so there are fewer crowds, great runs, and cheaper lift passes.

What's better, Alta or Snowbird? Question: I am heading out to Utah, which is better Alta or Snowbird? I am going with my 10 year old son. We are both advanced skiers (almost expert). Convenience is key. Any insight is apprceiated.
Answer:
I know the answer to this one!
They are both great! You can get a ticket that allows you to ski both mountains.
The low-down:
Snowbird - a little more glitzy atmosphere, and snowboarders.
Alta - has soul, and no snowboarders.
They are both challenging mountains, but with lots of beginner stuff as well. Alta does have more "flat spots" here and there. Some of the best stuff is only known to locals, and requires hiking, which is why Alta retains soul.
I left NY 5 years ago to ski Alta, and I think I will end up dying here. Best mountain in America outside Jackson Hole. Although Snowbird is a close 2nd or 3rd.
You may need to elaborate on "convenience". I'm not sure exactly what you mean by that. Lodging, shopping? The mountains are adjacent to each other, and share common conveniences. They both have lodging, ski shops, food, etc, and shuttles drive between the two as well. They are both the same distance from Salt Lake City.
Our ski areas in Utah are each quite unique, and I recommend you ski more than one.

Where in Utah is the best ski resort with least people and also are there any good deals for lifts? Question: Iwill ski in Alta, Snowbird, Solitude and Brighton, but i need to know if I can get any great deals for ski lifts. It will be 8 of us/
Answer:
Brighton has great runs and has cheaper prices. Alta is a good deal if all of ya'll are skiers. Snowbird is great if you have 4 kids going w/ u, cuz of the buy two adult passes, get 1 kid pass free. In my opinion Solitude is not good cuz its mainly tourist condo and cabin stuff

What can an east coast skier expect out west? Question: I am thinking about taking my 10 year old son to ski Utah next week. I hear they are getting pounded. Is powder skiing way different? Harder, easier? Safety issues? Will he or I freak out? We are both "advanced / expert" skiers. Not great on the Moguls, fine with steep stuff. Thinking about Alta in Utah.
Answer:
Don't worry about a thing. I skied in the East and the West (and Europe) and you'll find the skiing in the West is far superior. I brought my skis east one season and never dragged them out there again.
Your biggest danger is that once you've "tasted" western skiing you'll never ski in the East again. If you fall, it's a soft fall. You may freak out, however, since it's so much fun!
That said, you should be prepared for lots of powder -- I'm in Aspen and we had three feet of snow over the last few days -- VERY unusual.
Powder is basically skiing in three dimensions, not just two. It takes a bit of extra balance -- don't lean back. The newer shaped skis are very helpful in all conditions including powder and make everything easy to ski. Edges are not that important and just take it easy (it's not eastern hard pack). Also, while you're used to cold, we are expecting some cold here so bring warm clothes -- you can always shed them. Finally, remember to zip up all your pockets or you'll find them full of snow!
As for moguls, when there is enough snow you won't find any. As for the steeps, you'll need them in order to move if the snow is deep enough.
If you're looking for some choices in terms of where you'll find the best snow, check www.onthesnow.com, www.skicentral.com or www.ski.com for snow conditions and other information about the resorts.
Have a great time!

At which Utah ski resort should I buy a season pass? Need some opinions...? Question: Spending my first winter in SLC, Utah, this winter - and I'm looking at all the resorts and trying to choose which one is the best resort for me.
Do you have an opinion or idea about what place you like best? If so, please say why.
In my case, I'm an expert rider - what I need to be totally satisfied is big bowls, some chutes, and lots of powder (no problem with 500 inches per year). Fewer people is helpful (for instance, of the 12+ out-west resorts I've been to, Moonlight Basin (scary chute hike!) and Copper Mtn (best bowls) have
been among my top 3, above Breck, Beaver Creek and Vail...)
I'm a student, so I should get a discount, and Alta is out immediately, since it's a no-snowboard resort.
Whaddya think?
again, I'm not a skier. I was, 12 years ago, but i am not interested in going back to that, not for a resort that I will probably switch away from after a year anyways for a different one... soooo, non-alta recs?
Answer:
everyone on here is out of their mind.... PARK CITY utah is THE best resort i have seen in a while. when i went there again this past season, they have the best ski/snowboard conditions i have ever seen. I've been to Vail and Breck and it seems they are more ski rounded like a lot of resorts.

is it "racist" or rude for a mountain to only allow skiers? Question: i am talking about alta, near salt lake city, utah. my friend (snowboards) and thinks that it is rude for them to exclude people becuase of what they like to do. the fact is that many young children learn to ski there and it is easier with out snowboarders running you over (no offense, but many snowboarders do this, it is harder on skies). the snow is also better becuase snowboarder aren't pushing it all to the bottom of the mountain and packing it down and stuff. so please help me because i love alta and think is definatly not rude
P.S. i totally recomend alta to any skiers with kids-there is AMAZING powder and all levels of slopes
i m sorry i didn't mean either racist or rude i mean racist and rude. my friend said racist but i am sure that she said rude because she doesn't know what racist means. sorry about that mistake.

Best skiing ONLY mountains in the northeast USA? Question: I have gotten bored quickly this winter vacation. Last year, we went to Utah to ski, and the second day, we went to Alta Ski Resort. It was the best skiing ever, mainly because it was not allowed to have snowboarders there. Don't get me wrong, most of my friends are snow boarders, but on the mountains, I hate almost all the snowboarders because they are selfish and ignorant, off the mountain they are cool. So back to the question. Since we can't fly out west, I would like to know the following question. What are the best skiing ONLY mountains in the northeast? What my family was planning on doing was leave early Friday morning and stay out for a while, most likely Sunday night. As long as the distance fine, basically anywhere is New England and New York. Much appreciated if you answer. If there are no such mountains in the northeast, what are the best mountians overall?
Answer:
Sugarloaf in Maine is considered the best skiing in the Northeast.

Can a Native Spanish speaker please proofread this for me? You don't have to retype, only type corrections. Question: Acto IDEAL
Tejas, California, Utah, Washington, Nueva York, Oklahoma, Illinois, Kansas, Nuevo México, y Nebraska.

Candywhite, muchísimas gracias por su ayuda y consideración para leerlo, but I need someone to correct the mistakes in Spanish.
Also, please no on-line translators. 10 points waiting for you! Please help!!!
Answer:
You seem to be asking not for a translation but for proofing of the Spanish, which btw is excellent. This isn't the whole of it, but I can suggest a few changes I think will improve the text:
First paragraph: en vez de haber crecido en... y son...
Second: asistir not atender (also elsewhere); no "a" -- padres is the subject
I don't really understand the last sentence.
Fourth: las leyes
Fifth: En estos 10 estados... hay que haber...
Sixth (and elsewhere): too much conditional; anyhow the list mixes conditionals with infinitives; al gobierno
Sorry, I don't know how to type accents or ennes.

Which High School should I choose to go to? Question: I just moved to a very White suburban town in Utah, coming from West L.A. I will either go to Skyline, Alta, or West High School. It's my junior year, and I REALLY want straight A's in all my AP's. I used to be very popular and cool at my old school, but my unweighted GPA is 3.2, and I want to go to UCLA or U Michigan. To do this my priority is only A's.
I'm just afraid of ending up with no friends and having many lonely lunches. If this happens i might become depressed and completely not care about school.
But as soon as I start talking and making people laugh I will get very caught up in the social scene. This will also affect my grades.
Alta and Skyline are very white and preppy. This will help me stay LOW KEY, because I don't really fit in with them. West High is very ethnic, and even though I am Italian/French I feel much more comfortable with them. However if I get too comfortable I might lose my discipline.
Should I keep it LOW KEY? Should I just go for complete studying and have more fun my senior year when I go back to L.A? I mean, it's worth it right?
But the girls at Alta and Skyline are sosoooo hot.
HELP, WHICH SCHOOL SHOULD I CHOOSE? I have the option
Answer:
briefllama, Only the students really know for sure. http://www.onlinehighschoolreviews.com/Utah-High-Schools.html
