A portion of the city, the biggest in the Texas Panhandle, extends into Randall County. Amarillo was originally named Oneida and it is situated in the Llano Estacado region. The availability of the railroad and freight service provided by the Fort Worth and Denver City Railroad contributed the city's growth as a cattle marketing center in the late 19th century. Amarillo is the regional economic center for the Texas Panhandle as well as Eastern New Mexico and the Oklahoma Panhandle. The city was once the self-proclaimed "Helium Capital of the World" for having one of the country's most productive helium fields. Amarillo, Texas?
    Question:
Is Amarillo Texas considered to be a dangerous place to live....or is there a high crime rate? and also, is the population mostly mexican american, or?? I was just wondering, any info will help, thanks

    Answer:
I've never lived there but I've visited a bit. Amarillo is about as Texan as it gets. The people are a mix of anglo, mexican, and indian for the most part - all living together peacefully. I'm not sure about the crime rate but a lot of the outskirts of the downtown area are a bit rundown. The landscape is flat. And when I say flat, I mean FLAT. The Cadillac Ranch is a neat place to visit and the nation's 2nd largest canyon in nearby called Palo Duro Canyon. And don't forget the Barb Wire Museum nearby. It's a nice place to visit for a few days. As for danger - I never felt like it was dangerous but I know places are different when you actually live in a place.

I need a cheap flight from Amarillo Texas to Fayetteville Arkansas?
    Question:
I need a cheap flight from Amarillo Texas to Fayetteville Arkansas leaving on April 12th returning on April 15th. Some help here??? I need a flight under 500 prefereably! Thanks, Jared

    Answer:
I found that sometimes the best way is to call airlines direct. Sometimes the internet is cheaper, sometimes the phone operators are cheaper, sometimes travel agents are cheaper. Check out all three to make sure you get the best deal. There are a few other simple suggestions you should follow too: -- Choose the same airline for all legs of your itinerary whenever possible so you can take advantage of all connecting and round-trip airfares. -- Try to fly on the least popular days: Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday. -- Remember that Saturday night stays are usually required for most bargain airfares. -- Try to select the least popular flight times: mid-morning or late evening. -- Check with discount airlines for cheaper fares. -- Try to book as far in advance as possible. Generally try to purchase your tickets at least 21 days in advance of departure. Many airlines also have specials requiring three-, seven- or 14-day advance purchase. -- In general, the cheapest airfares are available in the spring and summer. -- If you travel around the holidays, book your departure and return flights a day or more before and after peak travel dates. If you're flexible, you might benefit by waiting until the last minute to book your flight because major carriers often run special sales. These sales, however, often have a long list of rules, restrictions and blackout dates. --Consider booking tickets that come with restrictions because they also come with a cheaper price tag. -- Consider using alternate airports near your desired airport. The extra drive can save you hundreds of dollars. --Be as flexible as possible with your dates. If I can be of more assistance, feel free to contact me. Good luck and I hope you have a wonderful trip!

how long will the housing market last in amarillo texas?
    Question:
According to the prime rate, the 30yr mortgage, the economy, and factoring in the growth rate and new industry here in amarillo.

    Answer:
Well, we here in West Texas and in the Panhandle have always seemed to be immune to the country's economy at-large. Even during the recession of the early 90's, our economy was doing just fine. The thing to remember is that, generally, as the prime rate rises, so too do things like wages and hours worked. Unemployment also tends to be dropping. The prime rate is raised by the Fed in order to prevent inflation, so by definition, the economy is growing if the prime rate is being raised. So, even though housing will become more expensive, people will be earning more in wages in order to sustain it.

What is the best restaurant in Amarillo Texas?
    Question:
If you say the Big Texan, you don't know good food. It doesn't have to be a big restaurant or a fancy restaurant. BBQ would be fine too. I am going over the weekend and I haven't been in years. Waterwidget thanks for the smart ass answer. I'm serious you dink!

    Answer:
My personal favorite is Ruby Tequila's. They are on Paramount and have a newer location out on Soncy. Don't skip dessert! Try the Chocolate Chimichanga! It's a Hershey Bar wrapped in a pastry like a burrito, fried, and topped with caramel, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream. Abuelo's is good, too, but a little classier atmosphere. BBQ: depends on your tastes. Cattle Call has a sweeter sauce whereas Dyer's has a more tangy, spicy taste. A lot of people like Desperado's, which is owned by a Dyer who split from the original family restaurant. I believe there is a bit of a feud going on there... The best steaks are at places that have odd hours. David's is an awesome little place, and last year I discovered Outlaw's Supper Club. You can't find it unless you are looking for it. It's out by the airport, but it's worth it. The exterior looks a little rough (if I remember correctly, there is a big lighted arrow sign that says BEER), but the steaks are awesome! Well worth it, but probably not the most family-friendly place. Call ahead for their hours. I don't remember them off them top of my head. Both of these places won Amarillo's "Best Kept Secret" award by the Globe News. David's got 1st place, Outlaw's 2nd. I love Kabuki Japanese Steakhouse. One of those "cook right at the table" places. There's also Sakura, but I prefer Kabuki myself. And don't forget to pick up donuts from the Donut Stop in the morning! My fave: blueberry cake donuts washed down with chocolate milk. Mmmmmm.... Those are my picks. The Amarillo Globe News publishes a Best Of Amarillo special section each year. I wasn't able to find the 2005 one, but here is the link to the 2004 results: http://www.amarillo.com/bestofamarillo/entertainment.html Just ignore the reference to the Big Texan. It won "Best Famous Restaurant", but come on; how many "famous" restaurants are there in Amarillo? My main advice is to stay clear of most national chains. Not that there is anything wrong with them, but there are too many local flavors to pass up on a short visit! Enjoy your visit! Be sure and post where you went and what you thought of it!

Where in Amarillo, Texas USA can I get Clan Keith & Clan Gunn tartan?
    Question:
My family has both Clan Keith & Clan Gunn members and I wanted to make them some gifts with the appropriate tartan, of course :-)

    Answer:
My husband is from the Keith clan too! He wore the clan kilt for our wedding, a beautiful tartan I must say! I am close to San Francisco, so I had the benefit of getting my kilt there as there are some kilt shops there. While I was looking for wedding stuff, however, I did get some stuff online. Perhaps that is what you will have to do. There are quite a few sources and the Keith tartan isn't too hard to find. Keep in mind that there is the ancient coloring and modern coloring, the difference is in the modern colors of the dyes now. The tartan is sold in differening weights too. So, you will need to decide on what weight of fabric/tartan you will want and/or need for your projects. I hope this helps you some! Best of luck. where can i take high school summer advancement courses in amarillo texas?
    Question:
I'm in 10th grade and i want to take history over the summer. i have no idea how to go about this.. help?!?!

    Answer:
If you are an AISD student, you should register for Summer school at Amarillo High. Registration is May 14th at 4:30 till 6:30 pm. All summer class are held at Tascosa or Amarillo High no matter which of the four high schools you attend (at least that is how it was when I went to summer school). When you get to registration, the people there should be more that happy to answer any of your questions. But basically, you sign up just like if you had failed that class except you'll be one of few there to get ahead. You can take up to 3 classes. You might sign up for an art credit or p.e. credit while your there. Do keep in mind that summer classes cost money. Good luck!
