Questions Possibly Related to Athens, TennesseeProvided By Y! Answers
Tennessee vs Illinois - Moving to Athens TN to Greenville IL. Should I live in TN or IL? Question: What are the benefits to living in Tennessee vs Illinois and vice versa. Taxes, cost of living, food, school, jobs enter entertainment etc.
Answer:
To be honest with you i would pick Greenville, Illinois. I live in Illinois but i do not feel as though i am biased. I do love the people here, however, and I think it is one of the best places to raise a family.
After looking at the City-Data website i still feel Greenville is best. It is about half the size of Athens but crime rates such lower crime than half of the population would suggest. Also, because these are such small towns, big cities nearby can be really convienent. On that note I would also go with Greenville. They are about 50 miles from St. Louis and Chicago is always an option for a weekend getaway, especially with the ease of the metra rail lines that run throughout the city and much of the surrounding areas.
Finally the best reason of all is the FEEL of the town. Athens looks like a good ol' hometown out of the 50's but so does Greenville. The town's buildings remind you of something out of leave it to Beaver.
Last but not least the people! Many of the people both men and women, are transportation workers and accomodations and food services. These people tend to be less personal. However, in Greenville the majority of the people are in education. Teachers can be some of the best people you know and are great neighbors! Also, you really get to know who your kid's teachers are if they are your neighbors.
Hope this helped!!!

Can I sack out on your porch, on the sofa, or in your barn? Question: Today I have decided this trek, "Homecoming America 2006." — decided on the evening of Odin's Day, the nine and twentieth of Eleventh Month, 2006.
This will be my Homecoming, the first one since 2003 when I came back from Iraq.
I don’t think I even went back then. I think my mind was still in Iraq.
I will walk all the way from Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia, to Athens, then to Asheville, North Carolina; then to the Cherokee communities south of Maggie Valley, then to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; then to Red River Gorge, Kentucky, then to my ancestral home in Elizabethton, Hardin County, then to the ferry that crosses the Ohio River, then to Springfield, then to Galesburg, once home of Carl Sandburg and Edgar Lee Masters.
I will take one small tent, one blanket, one spare pair of boots, extra socks, underwear, one change of jeans, one pair of sweats, a hat, some drinking water in a camelback, some fire, and a good knife, and a copy of the Koran.
Answer:
This sounds interesting.. you should like have a on-line journal about what you experience.

Global warming - and the new reality - what can we do to treat the symptoms? Question: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nation/5061439.html
In all, 41 deaths in the South and Midwest have been confirmed as heat-related, and other deaths are suspected, authorities said. The Tennessee Valley Authority, the nation’s largest public utility, shut down one of three units at the Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Athens, Ala., on Thursday because water drawn from the Tennessee River was exceeding a 90-degree average over 24 hours. “We don’t believe we’ve ever shut down a nuclear unit because of river temperature,” said John Moulton, spokesman for the Knoxville, Tenn.-based utility.

http://www.usatoday.com/weather/news/2007-08-16-japan- heat_N.htm
TOKYO — Japan sizzled through its hottest day on record Thursday, as a heat wave reportedly claimed at least 13 lives across the country and spurred fears of an electricity shortage.
The mercury hit 105.6 degrees Fahrenheit in the western city of Tajimi and also the central city of Kumagaya on Thursday afternoon, breaking a previous national record of set in 1933, according to the Meteorological Agency.
Elsewhere, rail tracks were bent out of shape in the sun, and authorities struggled to deal with fire alarms set off erroneously by rising temperatures, according to news reports.

Scientists have determined that the ice in Greenland and the Arctic is melting so rapidly that much of it could be gone by the end of the century. (See photos from the Arctic.)
The results could be catastrophic for polar people and animals, while low-lying lands as far away as Florida could be inundated by rising sea levels. (Read a story, see a map of how warming may toast Florida's coast).
http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/science/05/02/arctic.ice/
(CNN) -- Arctic sea ice is melting at a rate far quicker than predicted by climate change computer models and could disappear completely before the middle of the century, scientists have warned.
The study, published in the latest edition of the journal Geophysical Research Letters, found that the actual rate at which summer sea ice had shrunk per decade during the past 50 years was more than three times faster than an average of 18 of the most highly regarded climate simulations.

Well I know here in the U.S., the government does not want us to worry about it, because it is closely tied with there masters, the corporations. They want this to happen, and in a few years it will be even more obvious. The earth is saying to us, you are giving me a fever so either you do something to change the way you live, or you will go extinct so I can heal myself.

Answer:
Not only social security, but schools and health care services are also being used by illegal aliens. They have no right to school or medical care if they are here illegally. They are breaking the law and they should be put in jail and then sent back to Mexico. Why should people who break the law be given any kind of reward or should be allowed to use any government benefits. I see all these rallies on t.v and they are all saying how they are Americans, but they are not Americans at all, they are law breakers and should pay like anyone else. I'm sorry that Mexico is so messed up, but it is not the job of the United states to help you out. I'm sure that if Americans started to cross into Mexico in huge numbers, the government of Mexico would be up in arms and the boarder would look more like a war zone. Mexico wants illegals here because it helps out Mexico, they don't put any money back into the u.s.a, they send it back home. And people also say how they are only taking jobs that Americans won't do, that's a bunch of crap, because they take good jobs from Americans and they drive our wages way down, why pay me 15 dollars an hour when they can pay an illegal 8 dollars to do the same job. Its wrong and has to stop.

Southeast US: Which states do you like/not care for? Why? Question: For me
Like:
1. Texas (homey feeling, friendly, hot (sometimes too hot,) multicultural, cool cities, etc.)
2. Oklahoma (very midwestern, but has southern hospitality)
3. Mississippi (love the people, sweet accents, cuisine)
4. Alabama (like MS, except just a little more expensive)
5. Tennessee (Nashville, Memphis, Smokies, Oak Ridge all great places; friendly, beautiful)
6. North Carolina (although infiltrated by yankee transplants, the scenery is incredible)
7. South Carolina (Upcountry is a neat area, many old south courtesies still intact)
8. Georgia (decent enough outside Atlanta; Athens is nice)
9. Arkansas (the people, but not the scenery)
Not like:
10. West Virginia (those people are OK, but they weird me out)
11. Virginia (no longer the South, rushed like NYC/Boston/DC)
12. Florida (at least its warm, but one of the rudest places I've ever been. Don't go unless I have to)
13. Kentucky (Used to live there. Poor economy, terrible people and drivers, bad schools)
All in all, I love this part of the country, and wouldn't live anywhere else!
Answer:
I like most of the southern states except for one: Florida.
I lived in Florida for about 14 years and it was the most horrific experience of my entire life. Too hot and humid. The wages stunk,cost of living was very expensive. People were very rude.
Too many stupid rednecks(like there's any smart ones).Anything metal rusted real easy. Prices of food would go up in the winter when all the "snowbirds'" would come down from up north.
I'm so glad I finally moved back to my beloved Colorado.

Terrible choices for new monopoly? Question: So a few months ago I saw that they were putting the cities of the world up to a vote to see which cities would make it on to the board. And after seeing the preliminary list I thought they would just abandon the plan to let people vote, but they didn't. Here is how the board looks:
Dark Blue
Montreal, Canada (Boardwalk)
Riga, Latvia (Park Place)
Green
Cape Town, South Africa (Pennsylvania Avenue)
Belgrade, Serbia (North Carolina Avenue)
Paris, France (Pacific Avenue)
Yellow
Jerusalem, Israel (Marvin Gardens)
Hong Kong, China (Ventnor Avenue)
Beijing, China (Atlantic Avenue)
Red
London, England (Illinois Avenue)
New York, United States of America (Indiana Avenue)
Sydney, Australia (Kentucky Avenue)
Orange
Vancouver, Canada (New York Avenue)
Shanghai, China (Tennessee Avenue)
Rome, Italy (St. James Place)
Light Purple
Toronto, Canada (Virginia Avenue)
Kyiv (Kiev), Ukraine (States Avenue)
Istanbul, Turkey (St. Charles Place)
Light Blue
Athens, Greece (Connecticut Avenue)
Barcelona, Spain (Vermont Avenue)
Tokyo, Japan (Oriental Avenue)
Brown (Dark Purple in U.S. editions)
Taipei, China (Baltic Avenue)
Gdynia, Poland (Mediterranean Avenue)
I mean Tokyo barely made the board, meanwhile Montreal and Riga, Lativa are the new Boardwalk and Park Place. And what the fuck is Gdnyia Poland? I mean Warsaw seems like a more obvious choice. Do you like the idea that relatively insignificant cities made it or do you think they should of stopped the vote and used their own judgment?
Belgrade, Serbia??? really? that beat out places like Moscow, or L.A. Not even one South American city? How 'bout Rio or Buenos Aires?
Answer:
I see your point, but people who live in or just like these cities were more interested in voting than people who lived in larger cities.
It makes sense from Parker Bro's perspective. They're just giving the monopoly-community what they apparently want. Reportedly, there were several million votes counted. Unless the voting was seriously compromised, I guess Latvians love Monopoly. Who knew?

Is anti-Americanism a new phenomenon. Or did the WOT just bring out the haters that were always there? Question:
http://www.travelbrochuregraphics.com/extra/the_falseness_of_ant iamericanism.htm
Answer:
Of coarse the haters have always been there. We can't even get a consensus from our closest ally, the British. I suppose we will just need to live with it.
It became a national disgrace when the Clintons took office. These two people are not healers by any stretch of the imagination. These are, not one, but two lightning rods that galvanize the American public. If anybody can drive a stake into the American phyche quicker, it would be Hillary's alter ego, Rahm Emanuel., and she hangs on his every word.

What are my shots at getting into these schools? Question: I'm a rising senior in high school in Virginia. What do you think my shots are at these schools?
University of Georgia - Athens
Univeristy of Texas - Austin
James Madison University
Virginia Tech
University of Tennessee - Knoxville
GPA: 3.39 (weighted), includes difficult course load (3 AP classes this year, 3 next year with one dual enrollment, and the rest honors)
SATs: 540 reading, 710 math, 670 writing
Extracurriculars: Theatre (9-12)*, Male A'Capella Ensemble (9-12)**, Chamber Singers (9-12)***, Conert Choir (9-12), Indoor Track (10), Spanish Club (9-10), SCA (12)****, Dodgeball Club (10-12), Ping Pong Club (12), Boy Scouts (9-10)*****
Other notes: skipped a year in math

Answer:
Here's the breakdown for your school
Georgia
* 63% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
* 23% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
* 10% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
* 3% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
* 1% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99
Georgia seems to be a bit of a reach for you but you could very well get in with your excellent extraciriculars however it could be very tough if your out of state. Do not expect to get in but apply and hope for the best.
Texas
Texas doesnt give a GPA breakdown, however it is very competitive and only 51 percent of applicants are admitted. Also they tend to favor instate students so if your out of state it will be hard. However, your SAT's are good enough
SAT - Critical Reading Middle 50%:540-670
SAT - Math Middle 50%:570-700
TPR Projected Range SAT Writing:600-700
Apply to it as a reach but there is a good chance you could get in.
James Madison
This school seems to be in your reach. 64 percent of applicants are admitted and heres the GPA breakdown
* 43% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
* 28% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
* 21% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
* 6% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
* 2% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99
For you this school is a match and you have a better chance of getting in than not, especially with your extracirriculars and solid ACT.
Virginia Tech
The average GPA is 3.76
Here's some of their other averages
Freshmen Academic Profile
SAT - Critical Reading Middle 50%:530-630
SAT - Math Middle 50%:570-670
TPR Projected Range SAT Writing:600-670
ACT Composite Midldle 50%:23-27
Average High School GPA:3.76
Students in top 10% of HS class:40%
Students in top 50% of HS class:98%
Students from Public School:95%
As you can see your SAT for the most part exceeds their standards and your extracirriculars five u a good chance to get accpeted. But as you can see your GPA is below their standards heres the breakdown
* 50% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
* 30% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
* 13% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
* 5% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
* 1% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99
* 1% had h.s. GPA between 2.0 and 2.49
Ultimately this school is a slight reach but with ur tough course work you could get in.
Tenessee
You have a very good chance to gain acceptance 71 percent of their applicants are accpeted, however its a bit tougher if your out of state. Heres their GPA breakdown
* 41% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
* 22% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
* 17% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
* 11% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
* 7% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99
* 1% had h.s. GPA between 2.0 and 2.49
* 1% had h.s. GPA between 1.0 and 1.99
Also your SAT exceeds their standards i would expect you to be accepted, but its not an automatic, however, it is a match.
Overall, you have shots at all your schools but they are all pretty ambitious and many are reaches you may want to make sure that when you apply to colleges you apply to a safety or 2 but other than that good luck!

Question: So, with Georgia's prior 2 victories to unranked Division I-A opponents being decided by less than a touchdown for both (combined) and UGA being held to only 14 in both games (oddly enough all of their points in the previous 2 games were scored in the 2nd half).
With those previous two games and how weak UGA has appeared to be do you think they will survive matchups against teams like Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, and GA Tech who have performed very well so far? Can UGA turn it around or do you see the Vols "upsetting" UGA in Athens?
I'm a GA Tech fan working with a lot of UGA fans and nothing would make me happier than to see UGA lose all 4 of those games, but for argument's sake do you think they can actually perform or have the last two weeks been a preview of what's to come?
Answer:
I see the Vols shocking the overated Dogs about 24-20 in Athens, Florida should also beat them about 27-17, Auburn should win about 21-14 and Ga Tech will finish them off in Athens about 28-20. Go Jackets!

I don't understand a few of the football logos. Can you help? Question: I understand that the Tennessee Titans are the Titans because Nashville is the called the "Athens of the south" because of the other Colosseum built in Nashville. The Houston Texans - Ithink you can figure it out.The San Francisco '49ers are what they are because of the 1849 Gold Rush in California. The DallasCowboys because of the cowboys that lived there. The New England Patriots because in the Revolutionary War, they were the only states that were the United States. And finally, the Miami Dolphins because Florida=Dolphins. Oh, and also the Pittsburgh Steelers because Pittsburgh is a big manufacturer of steel. I don't understand the others though. In case you don't know them right off hand, they are the following:
Baltimore Ravens,Cincinnati Bengals,Cleveland Browns (what is a brown anyway?),Chicago Bears,Detroit Lions,I'm just not sure on this one, but don't the Green Bay Packers mean people that pack cheese?(that'll explain the cheesehead fans),Minnesota Vikings,Indianapolis Colts,
Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers, Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks and last but not least the St.Louis Rams.
I mean the teams above me too!!!!! like the jaguars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Answer:
Baltimore Ravens: Logo - I am not sure what the logo means. The nickname Ravens is because poet Edgar Allen Poe is from Baltimore and he authored "The Raven"
Cincinnati Bengals: Logo - black stripes like a Bengal tiger. Originally the helmet had the word Bengal written accross both sides, but was changed before the 1981 season to what is seen now. The nickname was given them by their owner and first coach (i think he was their first coach, not sure on that) Paul Brown, for a large, intimidating carnivorous feline.
Cleveland Browns: logo - none, simple brown helmet. The nickname is given them because of their first coach Paul Brown.
New York Jets: Logo - a football on each side with the letters NY and the word Jets in the middle. The logo has seen changes, it used to be similar but with a jet on the side. The nickname originally was the Titans, but was changed in 1962 because of america's love affair with jet travel at the time.
Indianapolis Colts: I think someone answered this one.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Logo - A jaguar's head with teeth bared. The name I am guessing is again based on an intimidating, large carnivorous feline.
Carolina Panthers: See Jaguars, they're almost identical
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Logo - a dark red Jolly Roger Flag. The old logo was a tangerine colored man with a huge feather in a large hat, (yeah, it was awful). The nickname to me seems obvious, using the intimidation factor that might be had from the word buccaneer. Little known fact: TB started it's first year in the AFC, and the Seahawks were in the NFC, they then traded places the next year. In 2002, Seattle moved back to the NFC.
Kansas City Chiefs: Logo - An arrowhead with the letters KC in it. The nickname I don't have much knowledge on how it came to be, but I know the team started out as the Dallas Texans and moved to KC in 1963 and renamed themselves the Chiefs.
Denver Broncos: Logo - horse's head. I don't know much on why they named themselves the Broncos.
Oakland Raiders: Logo - an image of a pirate with eyepatch and crossed swords behind him. The logo is actually the image of actor Randolph Scott. The nickname is the result of a contest put out to local radio stations with Raiders being the winner.
San Diego Chargers: Logo - yellow lightning bolt. Not sure how this nickname came about.
New York Giants: Logo - the letters NY. My best guess on the nickname here is that Giants is intimidating.
Washington Redskins: Logo - a circle with feathers hanging off one side, containing an image of a native american within the circle. This nickname is a source of heated debate about racism towards native americans. When the team was founded around 1933, the name was likely deemed appropriate.
Chicago Bears: Logo - a large C for Chicago. The nickname was given the team by it's original owner, George Halas, who wanted to honor the Chicago Cubs. This team is one of only three remaining original NFL teams, (Packers and Cardinals are the other two)
Green Bay Packers: Logo - a large G for Green Bay. The nickname was given them because the company that Curly Lambeau worked for, the Indian Packing Company, put up the money for jerseys. The team became offiliated with the packing company, and the name stuck.
Minnisota Vikings: I think someone already answered this one.
Atlanta Falcons: Logo - a red and black falcon. the nickname is that of a bird of prey, working the intimidation angle.
New Orleans Saints: Logo - black and gold Fleur-de-Lis. I don't know what that is or what it means. I haven't a clue how they came up with their nickname.
Arizona Cardinals - Logo - head of a cardinal (the bird, not the deity). The nickname came about in 1901 (the cards are the oldest continuous active franchise) because the owner, Chris O'Brien, bought some used jerseys for the team. The jerseys were faded red, they were originally maroon, but he is quoted as having said, "that's not maroon, it's cardinal red!" The name stuck ever since. The team started in Chicago, moved to St Louis, and then to Arizona.
St Louis Rams: Logo - gold rams horns on a blue background. The nickname was given to a new Cleveland franchise in 1937, for the NFL. In 1946, the Rams move to Los Angeles. In 1948, halfback Fred Gehrke designed rams horns to be painted on the helmets of all Rams players. This would be the first time a logo would be seen on helmets. In 1995, the Rams moved to St Louis.
