City Description

Woonsocket is a city in Sanborn County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 720 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Sanborn County. Woonsocket is named after Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Woonsocket is located at 44°03′10″N 98°16′25″W / 44.052797°N 98.273699°W / 44.052797; -98.273699. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.0 km), of which, 0.8 square miles (2.0 km) of it is land and 1.27% is water. Woonsocket has been assigned the ZIP code 57385 and the FIPS place code 72700. As of the census of 2000, there were 720 people, 301 households, and 192 families residing in the city. The population density was 918.4 people per square mile (356.4/km). There were 330 housing units at an average density of 420.9/sq mi (163.4/km). The racial makeup of the city was 97.50% White, 0.42% Native American, 1.11% Asian, 0.42% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.39% of the population. There were 301 households out of which 26.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband
