Questions Possibly Related to Dupree, South DakotaProvided By Y! Answers
What to expect in South Dakota? Question: I am going to South Dakota in mid August for a week to visit my girlfriend's family. They live in Rapid Valley outside Rapid City but have roots in the small town of Dupree. This is a very general question, but what is it like out there? The People, climate? etc. I am born and raised in Boston, so I am sure it is going to be quite a culture difference. I am really looking forward to going.
Answer:
While I haven't been to Boston, I did live on the east coast for a while and I think you'll find Rapid City quite different. :) Most of the people here are very friendly. Don't be surprised if someone starts talking to you in the checkout line in a store, or recommends something as you're looking around. The population of our entire state would fit into Boston on any given day, so we have to talk to somebody, lol.
The weather here is always changing. Usually during August we have hot days with thunderstorms in the late afternoon or evening. These can sometimes be severe with large hail. The humidity is usually pretty low here, so the heat doesn't feel too bad. The wind blows all the time. Sometimes it's just a nice breeze, other times you feel like you can barely walk since it's blowing so hard. Make sure you hold on to your car door when you open it so the wind doesn't blow it back and damage it.
East of Rapid City, you'll find rolling plains all the way across the state. About an hours drive to the east are the Badlands and Wall Drug. To the west, we have the beautiful Black Hills- home to Mount Rushmore and many other tourist attractions. If you're here between August 15th and 24th, we'll have the Central States Fair in town. It's a fairly large fair (for SD anyway) with rides, concerts, and rodeo's. Be prepared to see lots of cowboys and horse trailers.
Have a great trip!
