Deadwood, named for the dead trees found in its gulch, is a city in and the county seat of Lawrence County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,380 at the 2000 census. The city includes the Deadwood Historic District, a National Historic Landmark District, whose borders may be the city limits. Deadwood started off illegally, as its location was, at the beginning of its history, part of Native American territory. The Treaty of Laramie of 1868 had guaranteed ownership of the Black Hills to the Lakota people. However, in 1874, Colonel George Armstrong Custer led an expedition into the Hills and announced the discovery of gold on French Creek near present-day Custer, South Dakota. Custer's announcement triggered the Black Hills Gold Rush and gave rise to the lawless town of Deadwood, which quickly reached a population of around 5,000. In early 1876, frontiersman Charlie Utter and his brother Steve led a wagon train to Deadwood containing what were deemed to be needed commodities to bolster business, including gamblers and prostitutes, which proved to be a profitable venture. Demand for women was high, and the business of prostitution proved to be a good market. Madam Dora

My husband wants to visit Deadwood, South Dakota...what is there to do there other than gamble?
    Question:
I'm not a big gambler, hiker, fisher etc. Is there anything else to do there? We get one trip this year and aside from the state being beautiful, it doesn't appear that fun. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

    Answer:
Deadwood is kind of interesting for a couple of days. Lots of tourist things to do like explore the cemetery where Wild Bill Hickock is buried and the mines of the area. The gambling is a secondary thing since it is small time compared to Las Vegas. Deadwood is tourist trap tacky but fun to visit - and then leave to explore the Black Hills natural beauty and to see Mount Rushmore.

Help!! Is there a train station in Deadwood, South Dakota?
    Question:
I'm writing a western short story and I need to know if there is or ever has been a train station in Deadwood! Please, Please help! I really need to know! Also if there is a train station there could you tell me everything or anything you know about it? Websites with information would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in advance! BTW my story takes place in 1876 so if there is a train station but it was built after that year then I won't need any informatin about it.

    Answer:
There were no trains in Deadwood prior to 1876. The first railroad in the region was in 1880 and it was the Black Hills & Ft. Pierre, started by the Homestake Mining Company to bring cord wood fuel to the mills, shops and hoists, and timbers to the mine. It was sold to the Burlington Railroad in 1902 and no longer exists today. The first telephone exchange in Deadwood wasn't established until 1878. Hope this helps. http://www.legendsofamerica.com/SD-DeadwoodTimeline.htm l

what is the history of Deadwood South Dakota?

    Answer:
Deadwood started out as an illegal settlement on land that was designated "Indian Land" by the US Govt, but when gold was found in the area, white prospectors began moving into the region to get the gold, and set up a mining camp that became Deadwood. Being outside legal American territory, and filled with rough living miners, it became a haven of lawlessness, a treacherous hive of scum and villainy. In addition to miners and prospectors, Deadwood began to attract those who would cater to the miners, such as hardware salesmen, but also saloon keepers and brothels. Lots of them. They even set up theaters and gambling dens and other entertainments for suddenly wealthy miners to spend their gold on. Al Swearingen ran one very successful establishment, the Gem Theater, with dancing girls and stage plays and plenty of drinks. At its peak, the Gem was bringing in $4000 to $5000 a night. And this was in the late 1870s, when the average person might make a few hundred dollars a year. The boomtown of Deadwood was one of the first cities hooked up with telephone service. For a while, only Washington DC and Deadwood had any kind of telephone network at all. Deadwood is also famous for being the town in which Wild Bill Hickok was gunned down while playing cards. His friend and companion, Calamity Jane was also a major figure in Deadwood history. A cussing, sharp-shooting, men's-clothes wearing woman who also helped nurse many men back to health during a smallpox epidemic, and even worked a spell as a dancing girl in Swearingen's Gem Theater. The unofficial leaders of Deadwood, such as Swearingen, as well as other figures such as Seth Bullock, were instrumental in getting the territory of Dakota annexed as official US property. Many of these historical events have been fictionalized and presented in the superb HBO series Deadwood. If you're looking into the history of Deadwood I highly recommend getting a hold of the series. The first season is available on DVD. Be warned that some of the events (and characters) in the series are definitely fictional, or modified slightly for dramatic purposes.

    Skydiving in South Dakota?
    Question:
does anyone know if there's a drop zone in south dakota....preferably around deadwood/rapid city??

    Answer:
I don't know for sure, but you can find out on dropzone.com or www.uspa.org. There are a couple websites you need to check out to get good info on skydiving. http://www.uspa.org is the website of the United States Parachute Association, the governing body for sport parachuting in the United States. There is a list of member dropzones on the website along with all sorts of great info on the sport. http://www.dropzone.com is another great resource for everything about skydiving and some BASE too. http://www.skydiveradio.com is just fun and a good place to feel like you’re at the drop zone when you can’t physically be there. Make sure that you contact the drop zone you want to jump at directly. There are a few scams out there, one of which is 1800skyride. They will take your money and send you to any dropzone they want too but only about three dz’s in the country except skyride tickets. So please, please, please contact the dropzone directly. The tandem is a great jump. I’d get video too. I made one tandem a little over two years ago and came back to start student training (good info about student training at uspa.org) and got my license. I’ve been jumping for two years and have a few hundred jumps. I love this sport and I sincerely hope that you’ll become a full time skydiver and I’ll be able to make some jumps with you at a boogie! Blue Skies!

What's should I pack for South Dakota, going end of August?
    Question:
Are the mosquitos very bad? Someone said bring chapstick? If you have any other ideas, please let me know. Going to the presidential monument, deadwood, buffalo trail, and (2) other places. Thanking you in advance for any information you can provide.

    Answer:
The mosquitos aren't bad at all. To tell you the truth, I've probably seen 4 all summer. The west side of the state is a little dry so you might need chapstick if it is muggier where you live? Weird though.... Bring 'hot weather' clothes like shorts and sleeveless shirts....and deodorant, lol. Sunscreen? Sunglasses? Camera? If you are going to Deadwood, bring your poker face lol. Gambling in Deadwood is amazing. Prepare to drive carefully as this is during the end of bike week in Sturgis and there will probably still be a few straggling bikers. Go to the Cosmos in Hill City, it's kinda fun and kids love it. Need any other ideas? Let me know.

    Question:
I am traveling from Deadwood, South Dakota to New York. What cool, funny sites should i stop and see on the way to NY? (i.e. largest rubber band ball, potato chip that looks like Elvis haha)

    Answer:
Well, if you haven't already, check out this site. http://www.wlra.us/ You can search by state and plan what you want to see. As far as specific examples, I don't have any for you except that the world's largest yogi bear statue is in Cook Forest, PA. It's near my hometown, and it's a very pretty area. Definitely try to drive through Allegheny National Forest though. It should be on your way. Have fun!

Can people who are not Driving in a RV drink Alcohol?
    Question:
We are planning a roadtrip this spring for 5 people if 2 of us to not drink and take turns driving, can everyone else in the RV enjoy some beer? going from St. Louis to Deadwood South Dakota

    Answer:
Definitely would have to check every local and state law that you are going across, some places have different ordinances that could get you an open container charge. However as long as there isn't an intense odor coming from the RV I don't think anyone would be searching the vehicle to see if you have open containers.

Have you ever participated in a wagon train?
    Question:
When I was a kid, I used to go with my grandparents. What fun it was! As an adult, I have only been able to join up for a couple of days. There is one this summer I really want to go on, though. It is is to commemorate the 100th aniversary of the Fort Pierre-Deadwood Trail in South Dakota. From what I hear, there are many historic sites along the trail. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe is putting on a pow wow, and landowners have given easements and some have mowed so you can see the old wagon wheel ruts. I really want to go, the boss says he can't spare me (grrr-still working on this) and I was just wondering what wagon train stories you have! Any honey wagon drivers out there? Sorry, the closing of the trail. Settlers started fencing their land and it was closed in 1908. MR- I mean TEM- who is Fritz and what does he have to say? Please give me the heads up about him. (e-mail if you want to) Is he with the Fort Pierre development? What do you have to do to be approved?

    Answer:
My mother and stepfather were active wagon trainers for a few years. The group still camps at her place on their way from Bloomington IN to the Ohio River camp. Their wagon had quite the set up for sleeping and camping. I'd like to have one when we retire and have time to go do this stuff.
