Alpena (pronounced al-PEE'-nuh) is a town in Jerauld County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 265 at the 2000 census. Alpena is located at 44°10′55″N 98°22′03″W / 44.181843°N 98.367539°W / 44.181843; -98.367539. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.3 km), all of it land. Alpena has been assigned the ZIP code 57312, and the FIPS place code 01020. As of the census of 2000, there were 265 people, 113 households, and 78 families residing in the town. The population density was 161.1 people per square mile (62.0/km). There were 122 housing units at an average density of 74.2/sq mi (28.5/km). The racial makeup of the town was 99.62% White and 0.38% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.38% of the population. There were 113 households out of which 30.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.4% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
