Columbia is the state capital and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 116,278 according to the 2000 census (2007 population estimates put the city at 124,818). Columbia is the county seat of Richland County, but a small portion of the city extends into Lexington County. The city is the center of a steadily growing metro area of 716,030. The city's name comes from a poetic synonym for America, derived from the name of Christopher Columbus. Located just 13 miles (21 km) northwest of South Carolina's geographic center, Columbia is the primary city of the Midlands region of South Carolina, which comprises several counties in the central portion of the state. As such it is centrally located to the rest of the state. Founded in 1786 as the site of South Carolina's new capital city, it was one of the first planned cities in the United States. The area is often cited for its high quality of life offerings, with its many cultural amenities, parks, and recreational features. At the confluence of two major rivers, Columbia is one of the best destinations in the country for kayak and canoe enthusiasts. It is also known for its large number of independent

What is the public transportation system like in Columbia, South Carolina?
    Question:
I'll soon be relocating to Columbia, South Carolina. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like my '94 Mazda will make the trip with me. As a new car and a new policy is a bit out of reach, I'm curious if the local public transports will suffice. Any local or anyone with information regarding Columbia in general or the public transports, please share the knowledge.

    Answer:
We live in Columbia. We do have public buses, however, there are usually not seats or an area to wait. It is a problem the city is working on.. but we do have plenty of public buses. Sometimes there is just a sign in a grassy area on the side of a busy street. If you need any more info about Columbia, just email me at spendergast5@yahoo.com Good luck with the move! We love it here, but it is really hot this time of year. Hope this helps.

How is economy, jobs and taxes in Columbia, South Carolina?
    Question:
We live in Michigan currently (no jobs, high taxes) and are thinking of moving to South Carolina to start a lawn business. We also have 4 month old twins so I am wondering about schools in addition to property taxes, business taxes and income taxes. I know South Carolina has income tax, unlike some states. How is the economy, and how is the weather for a year-round lawn business? Also, is Columbia a good area for lawn business customers and raising kids? Is it more urban or rural? Are there a lot of residences?

    Answer:
Job market is good. Cost of living is low. And, yes, you can do lawn service almost year round (10-11 months for sure). Downtown Columbia is urban. But, about 20 miles in either direction is relatively rural.

where can i find a house for rent in columbia south carolina?
    Question:
columbia, south carolina. in the northeast area

    Answer:
In addition to the newspaper, there is a local publication, a small magazine actually, (which I can't recall the name) that many businesses display. It contains a slew of houses/apartments for sale or rent. The magazine also contains excellent information pertinent to the local area. Also, in addition to Columbia being a metropolitan area, the addition of the army at Ft Jackson creates additional rental units, since many military personnel are only there temporarily and choose to rent.

Columbia,SC has websites. I have been there many times (friends there). It is the state capital. There are many historical sites to visit. There are great parks in or nearby the city.
