Is "Good Old Boy Politics" good for South Carolina?

    Answer:
Is up to the people who vote to decide about it.

    Moving to South Carolina?
    Question:
Hi! I’m a 16 year old male and I have lived in New Jersey my whole life. I consider myself a pretty Northeastern person in terms of my views and culture. My family might be moving to South Carolina later this year. My parents have been looking at houses outside the Charleston area and it seems like they definitely want to move. They mainly want to get out of the cold and take advantage of lower taxes (NJ is sooooo expensive). I can see where they’re coming from, but I’m really not sure about going. NJ is part of who I am, and I’m worried about getting used to living in the South. I guess I’m just nervous that I’ll be a Northern city kid out of my element. Has anyone had a similar experience? Anyone from the Palmetto State with any insight? Thank you so much!

    Answer:
i used to live in montana, but then im 04 we moved to here in good ol south carolina. it was hard at first, the weather sucks, way too humid for me, the people are a little too full of themselves (big egos) and its kindove expensive where i live too. which is in mount pleasant 1 min away from the IOP. you will know what the IOP is if you move here. but, other then that, it is pretty cool. people love football. you will either see orange, or a dark red color on most peoples cars. as in CLEMSON - orange annd GAMECOCKS - dark red and black i love the gamecocks!!!!! hmm, hootie from hootie and the blowfish lives on the IOP...(: oh and lastly, beware of the palmetto bug. aka cockroaches, they are litterally EVERYWHERE!!!!! and are 1/2 inches long. i hope i helped some...see you round mabey

Englishman maybe moving to South Carolina?
    Question:
What do you guys think, would I fit in with the City of 'Greenville' SC? I know in New York, sounding English, well people would barely know, or care - as there are 100's of cultures/races/religions there. I had vague ideas of going here you see, but some American people joke about 'Southern types' - saying the are inbred, and 'dumb', violent and unevolved. Surely this is just a joke, yes? Are they so bad? Would being from England make me a target for racial abuse from whites as well as African Americans when they hear my voice? (well spoken English accent). I'm hoping people don't care at all where you come from, or your voice, but a few people have said to me that South Carolina is 'worse than Texas' when it comes to reactionary views/behaviour. So American people, please tell me that 'Greenville', SC, isn't so bad. Personally I like the diversity American offers, and I respect different cultures and want to engage with them - all races too. Many thanks in advance.

    Answer:
I'm in Virginia, also part of the south. As with everywhere else in the world, there are bad neighborhoods and good ones. In Virginia, we have quite a large ex-pat community of English. Many came because of our horse community and because fox hunting is still popular. There are English pubs, groceries and the like. Southern people are not in a rush. They tend to be very "laid back" and slow to anger on the whole. They have a great sense of humor, even when it's at their own expense and are friendly and welcoming to visitors and newcomers alike. I relocated to the South many years ago. I love the warm temperatures, the foods, the rich heritage, the sexy drawls and the hospitality. And as to racism, you will find no more racism in the south than in any other place in the world. There are racist people everywhere, but it is no more prevalent in the south than anywhere else. Greenville, SC is a beautiful city. The ethnic makeup is diverse. The racial makeup of the city was 62.12% White, 33.94% African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.27% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.37% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.44% of the population. There is a thorough entry at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenville,_South_Carolina

Maurice's BBQ eateries here in South Carolina fly the Confederate Flag would you eat in them many races won't!
    Question:
Maurice Piggie Park restaurants have a bad history, granted the BBQ might be good, but even the best food turns disgusting when you dump "poop" (his Confederate flag dogma) into the mix. Recently his restaurants were chosen as having the best BBQ here in the Capitol,Columbia. But many have chosen to boycott and not do business with him (including myself). And not just locals in the city or our state. But on a National level. Many stores don't carry his products because of his devisive and racist views. So this issue is not about color but more about the color of M-O-N-E-Y and he's bad business and an atrocious investment. He complains and whines that he is losing business because of unfair business practices. But the old dude (and he is old) has got to get a grip. The Civil War was about slavery and it has been over forever, the SOUTH lost and Maurice is trying to keep Dixie alive it's dead...let it stay dead Maurice. I wish that we could have a local, national and international boycott!

    Answer:
I would never eat at a place that flew the Confederate flag. As an black person and as an American, I will not fly a Confederate flag nor do I have respect for it. I know the history. The Confederate states(aka the South) broke away from the Union(US of A) because of social and economical reasons. The South wanted to keep their slaves because they thought it was economically viable for the economy,The fact is that slavery is horrible and it is next to stealing when you really look at it. As an American, I will not respect the Confederate flag, so if I ever go through Columbia,SC, I will not eat at any place with a Confederate flag being displayed. You are right. The South lost and slavery came to an end because of it.

Does the North USA really want the South out?

    Answer:
Yeah! I've seen this...the South's secession was stopped by northern aggression...Now is the time for the south to divest the north by exclusion. An example is one northern state represented by a War criminal, a murderer, and a homosexual pedophile! Why would any civilized people want anything to do with a group of people that show who they are by that representation?

Do all USA Senators have problems with telling the truth?
    Question:
With economic troubles dominating the race, McCain opened the new line of criticism against Romney at his first event of the day in Fort Myers, Fla., and sought to shift the campaign back to his strength, national security, and away from Romney's, the economy. First, he slapped at Romney without naming him during a question-and-answer session with Floridians, saying: "Now, one of my opponents wanted to set a date for withdrawal that would have meant disaster." Minutes later to reporters, the Arizona senator was more direct: "If we surrender and wave a white flag, like Senator Clinton wants to do, and withdraw, as Governor Romney wanted to do, then there will be chaos, genocide, and the cost of American blood and treasure would be dramatically higher." Asked about the comment in Land O' Lakes, Fla., Romney bristled. "That's dishonest, to say that I have a specific date. That's simply wrong," he said. "That is not the case. I've never said that." The former Massachusetts governor added: "I know he's trying desperately to change the topic from the economy and trying to get back to Iraq, but to say something that's not accurate is simply wrong — and he knows better." Later in Sun City, Fla., McCain stuck to his assessment and said: "The apology is owed to the young men and women serving this nation in uniform." He said he was quoting Romney as favoring a "timetable" for withdrawal and argued that he was not misquoting Romney, saying, "Clearly, the impression was that he was ready to set a date for withdrawal." But Romney quotes circulated by McCain's campaign didn't show Romney making that exact comment — nor did aides back up McCain's earlier comment that suggested that Romney "wanted to set a date for withdrawal." In an interview with ABC News in 2007, Romney said: "There's no question that the president and (Iraqi) Prime Minister al-Maliki have to have a series of timetables and milestones that they speak about. But those shouldn't be for public pronouncement. You don't want the enemy to understand how long they have to wait in the weeds until you're going to be gone." While Romney has never set a public date for withdrawal, he has said that he agrees with Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, that U.S. troops could move to more of an oversight role in 2008. McCain, for his part, has been a staunch supporter of the Iraq war and advocated more troops on the ground for years before Bush embraced that position last year and ramped up the number of U.S. forces in Iraq. The buildup helped curb violence in Iraq, and McCain has not been shy about claiming credit for the strategy's success. Romney aides labeled McCain's charge "stunningly false," while McCain aides portrayed his Iraq comments as part of a broader effort in the coming days to question Romney's leadership, foreign policy experience and judgment. A former venture capitalist and business consultant, Romney has spent the past week arguing that he is the Republican best able to right a troubled economy, given his 25-year record in the private sector. He's argued that McCain, who has spent much of his life in the military and in Congress, doesn't have the qualifications necessary to lead the country out of a potential recession. McCain, in turn, has sought to beat back Romney on the issue by arguing that a president needs to be ready to lead and qualified on both national security and economics, and he offers both — despite having previously acknowledged that the economy is not his strongest suit. He also sought to rebut Romney's criticisms in an unusual fashion: he dispatched high-profile surrogates to talk with the press corps traveling with the former governor. Among them: former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift. She boarded the Romney press bus to repeat similar criticisms to reporters. ____ Associated Press Writers Glen Johnson in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Libby Quaid in Fort Myers, Fla., contributed to this report. * Email Story * IM Story * Printable View RECOMMEND THIS STORY Recommend It: Average (196 votes) 2.7 stars » Recommended Stories Full Coverage: 2008 Presidential Election Off the Wires * Obama runs away with SC primary AP, 3 minutes ago * Racial divide could hurt Obama beyond SC AP, 4 minutes ago News Stories * Obama wins in South Carolina at The Chicago Tribune (reg. req'd), Jan 27 * Obama wins South Carolina at Politico, Jan 27 Opinion & Editorials * Obama's Big Win in SC a Referendum on Clintons The Nation via Yahoo! Answer:
Telling the truth would often result in alienating a block of voters. In a close race that can mean defeat in an election. Getting elected is a politician's top priority, above all else. They all do it. JFK lied when he said the U.S. farmer could feed the world. He knew it wasn't true, but it got him the farm vote along with a lot of the do-gooders votes--farmers saw $ bills while others felt the tug on their heartstrings. Ike Eisenhower was Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe in WWII and later a two-term president. But it wasn't 'til his farewell address to the nation that he warned us about the threat of our "huge military industrial complex". He had basically lied about it for his enire career by hiding from the general public what he knew. And even though I'd call him basically a good man, albeit plenty paranoid, even he was probably overwhelmed by it all. I could not imagine a politician surviving political office by telling the truth all the time. Jesus Christ tried it and you see what they did to him.

NRA-ILA Grassroots Alert Vol. 13, No. 14 04/07/06 States with updates this issue: Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, New York, South Carolina, and Texas. RIGHT-TO-CARRY NOW LAW IN NEBRASKA! On April 5, Governor Dave Heineman (R) signed Legislative Bill 454 into law, making Right-to-Carry the law of the land in Nebraska! "It took over a decade to bring Right-to-Carry to the good citizens of Nebraska, but those years of hard work have paid off tremendously," declared NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox. "I want to thank Governor Dave Heineman, and Senator Jeanne Combs (R-32), for their support and their efforts in giving Nebraskans the right to protect themselves and their loved ones. Senator Combs' dedication and persistence was vital in ensuring passage of this measure through the state legislature." LB 454 passed with bi-partisan support, as Nebraska senators voted 33-12 in favor of the measure. The bill allows law-abiding Nebraskans who undergo a background check and apply for a permit to carry a concealed firearm for self-protection. Two weeks ago, legislators in neighboring Kansas overrode Governor Sebelius' (D) veto to bring Right-to-Carry to that state as well. Now, of all the 50 states, only Wisconsin and Illinois flatly refuse to recognize the right of law-abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms for self-protection against criminal attack. "Once again, on behalf of our NRA members in Nebraska, I want to thank all the legislators who voted to bring Right-to-Carry to their state," concluded Cox. "And as always, we appreciate the commitment and participation of our members in Nebraska for their part in making it happen." To view this legislation use the "Bills" feature at the following link http://alisdb.legislature.state.al.us/acas/ACASLogin.asp GOV ERNOR RILEY SIGNS ALABAMA "CASTLE DOCTRINE" INTO LAW! On April 4, Alabama Governor Bob Riley (R) signed NRA-backed "Castle Doctrine" bill SB 283 into law. Senator Larry Means (D-10), and Representative Albert Hall (D-22), sponsored the self-defense bill. With overwhelming support, SB 283 passed the Alabama House by a vote of 82 to 9, and the Alabama State Senate by a vote of 30 to 2. ILA's Chris W. Cox, stated, "We thank Governor Riley for signing this vital legislation into law for the people of Alabama. Law-abiding citizens now have the choice to defend themselves and their families in the face of attack without fear of criminal prosecution and civil litigation." The "Castle Doctrine" bill removes the "duty to retreat" if an individual is attacked in his or her home, vehicle, place of business, or any other place he or she has a legal right to be. This legislation also states that victims may use necessary force to defend themselves against the attacker. "I would like to thank the bill's sponsors, Senator Means and Representative Hall, and the Alabama State Senators and State Representatives who supported this bill. As always, we also thank all the NRA members and lawful gun owners who contacted their representatives and urged them to support this vital self-defense measure," concluded Cox. SUPPORT HR 5092-- "THE BATFE MODERNIZATION AND REFORM ACT OF 2006" On April 5, the leaders of the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security--Representatives Howard Coble (R-N.C.), and Bobby Scott (D-Va.)--joined forces to introduce H.R. 5092, the "Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) Modernization and Reform Act of 2006." This bipartisan bill is a critical first step toward finally reforming BATFE. First and foremost, H.R. 5092 totally revises the system of administrative penalties for licensed dealers, manufacturers and importers of firearms. Today, for most violations, BATFE can only give an FFL holder a warning, or totally revoke the license. This bill would allow fines or license suspensions for less serious violations, while allowing license revocation for the kind of serious violations that would block an investigation or put guns in the hands of criminals. H.R. 5092 also clarifies the standard for violations-allowing penalties for intentional, purposeful violations of the law, but not for simple paperwork mistakes. Congress thought it had fixed this problem in 1986 when it passed the Firearms Owners' Protection Act, but the government has ignored that law-and has even argued in court that the 1986 changes were "without practical significance." The bill also improves the process by which BATFE imposes these penalties, notably by allowing FFLs to appeal BATFE penalties to a neutral administrative law judge, rather than to an employee of BATFE itself. H.R. 5092 would change BATFE's enforcement operations in several ways, from requiring the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Justice to review of BATFE gun show enforcement operations, to demanding that the Bureau establish clear investigative guidelines. Finally, the bill would focus BATFE's efforts on violations of firearms, explosives, arson, alcohol and tobacco laws, rather than non-jurisdictional areas. Please be sure to contact your U.S. Representative at (202) 225-3121, and urge him or her to cosponsor and support H.R. 5092, the "Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Modernization and Reform Act of 2006!" SENATOR VITTER INTRODUCES S. 2599--THE SENATE VERSION OF THE "DISASTER RECOVERY PERSONAL PROTECTION ACT OF 2006" On April 7, U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-La.) introduced S. 2599--the Senate companion bill to H.R. 5013, the "Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act of 2006" introduced on March 28, by U.S. Congressman Bobby Jindal (R-La.). This NRA-supported bill would amend federal emergency statute laws to prohibit local authorities from confiscating lawfully owned firearms during times of disaster. Thirty three states have "emergency powers" laws that give the government permission to suspend or limit gun sales, and to prohibit or restrict citizens from transporting or carrying firearms--something NRA-ILA is working to change. In some states, authorities can seize guns outright from citizens who have committed no crime--and who would then be defenseless against disorder. Please be sure to contact your U.S. Senators and your U.S. Representative, and urge them to cosponsor and support S. 2599, and H.R. 5013, respectively, the "Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act of 2006!" You can reach your Senators at (202) 224-3121 and your Representative at (202) 225-3121. SUPPORT H.R. 5005, THE "FIREARMS CORRECTIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS ACT" Representative Lamar Smith (R-Tex.) recently introduced H.R. 5005, the "Firearms Corrections and Improvements Act," which would make a variety of technical changes to federal firearm laws. The bill would roll back unnecessary restrictions, correct errors, and codify longstanding congressional policies in the arena of firearms laws. Among its provisions, H.R. 5005 would: permanently ban taxes or "user fees" on background checks by the federal instant check system--fees that Congress has prohibited in annual appropriations riders since 1998; permanently ban creation of a centralized electronic index of dealers' records--a threat to gun owners' privacy that Congress has barred through appropriations riders for a decade; codify limits on disclosure of trace records--which Congress has already limited through a series of appropriations riders over the past few years, out of concern for gun owners' privacy and the confidentiality of law enforcement records; and repeal of obsolete language from the Brady Act's "interim" waiting period provisions, that expired in 1998. Please be sure to contact your U.S. Representative at (202) 225-3121, and urge him or her to cosponsor and support H.R. 5005, the "Firearms Corrections and Improvements Act!" PLAN TO ATTEND FREE MILWAUKEE GRASSROOTS WORKSHOP! The NRA-ILA Grassroots Division will host its FREE Grassroots Workshop in conjunction with NRA's Annual Meetings in Milwaukee. This Workshop has been a regular part of NRA's Annual Meetings for a decade. At this event, you will hear from NRA officers, NRA staff, and your fellow NRA members on what you can do in your own community to ensure victory for the Second Amendment in this year's elections. We will also discuss how you can work with your local Election Volunteer Coordinator (EVC). Your EVC is a local NRA member who is working with the various pro-gun campaigns in his area to provide critically-needed volunteer support for a variety of activities, including: phone banks, precinct walks, literature drops, voter registration drives, Get Out The Vote & Election Day activities, etc. EVCs also promote NRA-ILA's legislative agenda at the federal and state levels. With the 2006 campaign season in full swing, it is critical that we start implementing our grassroots battle plan to ensure we are ready to meet these electoral challenges head on as Election Day 2006 approaches. Rest assured, the anti-gunners are already doubling their efforts to ensure the defeat of pro-Second Amendment candidates in critical elections across the country, so we must ensure we are prepared to defeat their efforts at every turn. Please take a moment to send Representative Gorman a note thanking her for working with the NRA to resolve this issue and encourage her to continue to work with us to protect Arizona's gun owners and sportsmen. State Representative Gorman's e-mail address is pgorman@azleg.gov. CONNECTICUT As we have been reporting, the anti-gun crowd has redoubled their efforts to pass last year's proposal to make it a crime to fail to report the loss or theft of a firearm within 72 hours from when you "knew or should have known" of the theft. This year's version is outrageous! H.B. 5818, now includes language that would subject gun owners to criminal investigation and jeopardy of prosecution even if they report the theft because a court will now be given the ability to decide whether the firearm was stored in such a manner that provided "substantial and unjustifiable risk" that it would be stolen. Even worse, if the police recover the firearm before the gun owner has discovered it missing and made the report, it will be considered automatic evidence of guilt of violation of this proposed law, as well as guilt of an illegal transfer. Conviction of the "illegal transfer," which is a felony, would permanently end your right to own a firearm! In response to the large number of phone calls that are coming in from legitimate gun owners, Connecticut Against Gun Violence has put out desperate pleas to the anti-gun crowd asking them to write, e-mail and call lawmakers in an effort to drown out your voice! If you have not contacted your legislators yet, we urge you to do so today! The Public Safety and Security Committee could consider HB 5818 as early as next week. The Public Safety and Security Committee can be reached at (860) 240-0570. For more information on the Public Safety and Security Committee please visit www.cga.ct.gov/ps/. DELAWARE The Delaware House of Representatives may be voting as early as Tuesday on H.B. 359, sponsored by Representative Deborah Hudson (R-12), the NRA-backed "shall-issue" Right-to-Carry bill. This bill would allow law-abiding citizens that fulfilled the requirements for a concealed weapons permit to be granted a permit without discrimination. Your State Representative needs to hear from you! Please take the time to call or e-mail your State Representative TODAY and respectfully urge him or her to support HB 359 when it comes before them for consideration. The future of Right-to-Carry in Delaware depends on it! IDAHO Thanks to the efforts of NRA members across the State of Idaho who sent thousands of e-mails and made countless phone calls to State lawmakers, four important bills have become law in the state and a fifth is on the way. Senator Gerry Sweet (R-20) and Representative Bill Sali (R-21) co-sponsored three NRA-supported bills: House Bill 686 will protect non-profit shooting ranges and gun clubs from having taxes imposed on their range fees and membership dues; Senate Bill 1401, "Emergency Powers" legislation, will prevent government officials from imposing restrictions on the lawful possession, transfer, sale, transport, storage, display or use of firearms and ammunition during a disaster emergency; and Senate Bill 1428, "Right-to-Carry" reform legislation, that extends the concealed weapon license from four to five years and, like driver's licenses, requires renewal notices be sent out prior to license expiration. This bill also provides an exemption from the concealed weapon license requirement for a person who possesses a concealed weapon while on property he or she owns or leases. Senator Skip Brandt (R-8) proposed House Bill 608, legislation that creates an NRA motor vehicle license plate. This bill has also become law, so look to sign up for a special NRA license plate in the near future. The fifth bill, Senate Bill 1441, is "Castle Doctrine" legislation that would provide immunity from civil action for anyone who has used lawful force in self-defense. Under SB 1441, if a criminal attacks a victim and the victim successfully defends him or herself and, in the process, injures or kills the criminal, then neither the criminal nor the criminal's family can obtain a judgment against the victim for damages. This bill, carried by Senators Mel Richardson (R-32) and Joyce Broadsword (R-2), has passed both the Senate and House and is headed to the Governor's desk. ILLINOIS Thanks to the efforts of those who contacted their State Representative, H.B. 4853 passed the House with an NRA-supported amendment that excludes ammunition. The House concurred on this legislation with the Senate offered and NRA-supported amendment overwhelmingly by voting 115 to 1. Without this important amendment, H.B. 4853 as originally passed by the House could have been used to target ammunition manufacturers, distributors, users, and owners of property where firearms are lawfully discharged. This legislation will now head to the Governor's desk. LOUISIANA On Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary C Committee reported out S.B. 93, by Senator Joe McPherson (D-29), NRA-backed legislation amending the state's emergency powers act to prohibit the seizure and confiscation of legally possessed firearms in the unfortunate event of another natural disaster in the State of Louisiana. The full Senate could vote the bill on as early as Monday afternoon. Please e-mail and call your State Senators on Monday morning and urge them to support SB 93. Although an official agenda had not been posted as when this Alert went to print, it is expected the House Administration of Criminal Justice Committee may hold hearings on the House versions of measures to end New Orleans-style gun confiscations during a state of emergency: H.B. 36 by Representative Pete Schneider (R-90), H.B. 136 by Representative Troy Hebert (D-49), H.B. 172 by Representative Danny Martiny (R-79), and HB 760 by Representative Steve Scalise (R-82). Please email and call the members of the committee and urge them to support these measures. The committee normally meets on Wednesday and Thursday mornings in Room 6 of the State Capitol. To contact your state lawmakers, check the committee's schedule, and agenda, or for a list of committee members, please call the PULS line at (225) 342-2456 (from the Baton Rouge area) or (800) 256-3793 (outside the Baton Rouge area) or visit http://senate.legis.state.la.us/Senators, http://house.louisiana.gov, and http://www.legis.state.la.us MAINE Representative Josh Tardy (R-Newport) is offering an important amendment that adds two important provisions to L.D.1938, "An Act To Protect Victims of Domestic Violence." The "Tardy Amendment" would do the following: (1) Allow the court to order a person seeking a "protection from abuse" order--who is proven to be in "bad faith"--to pay damages and reasonable attorney's fees to the defendant and; (2) Makes law enforcement officials responsible for damage to firearms resulting from a lack of reasonable care, which are seized, surrendered or relinquished. Presently, the possibility of "bad faith" orders within the court system create a "shadow of doubt"--hurting the true victims of domestic violence. This measure would help eliminate "bad faith" orders from occurring, thus furthering validity for all legitimate "protection from abuse" proceedings. Furthermore, relinquished firearms are often damaged and sometimes never returned to the owner after a "protection from abuse" order is terminated. This amendment would correct that problem. Similar language recently passed the Pennsylvania Legislature and was supported by all stakeholders, including gun owners as well as domestic violence organizations. This measure passed overwhelmingly with bipartisan support. Please call your State Legislator today and respectfully ask him or her to support the "Tardy Amendment!" Your State Legislator can be contacted in Augusta at (800) 423-2900. MICHIGAN Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) signed two pro-gun bills, both sponsored by Representative Rick Jones (R-71). H.B. 4643 addresses a problem with concealed pistol licenses (CPL) being renewed in a timely fashion. Apparently, the Detroit area was taking 9 to 10 months to renew concealed pistol licenses! HB 4643 corrects the renewal process by requiring a proper renewal to be completed within 60 days or the license is extended for 180 days or until the permit is renewed. H.B. 4642 allows a licensed spouse to carry or transport another licensed spouse's inspected pistol. A thank you goes out to Governor Granholm for signing these two important Right-to-Carry reform bills into law. NEW YORK On April 9, members of the Assembly Health Committee are set to consider A. 6608A, sponsored by Assemblywoman Ginny Fields (D-5), an NRA-supported bill that would protect existing shooting ranges from new noise ordinances and nuisance lawsuits aimed at shutting them down. A. 6608A provides that facilities must comply with noise ordinances in place at the time of construction of the range. The Senate companion bill to A 6608A, S. 3353A, is sponsored by Senator Dale Volker (R-59) and could be voted on by the full Senate at any time. Please contact your lawmakers today and urge them to support A. 6606A and S. 3353A. The general phone number to the Senate is (518) 455-2800. The general phone number for the Assembly is (518) 455-4100. SOUTH CAROLINA Thanks to phone calls from NRA members H. 4681, introduced by Representative Mike Pitts (R-14), unanimously passed the House Judiciary Committee's Constitutional Laws Subcommittee with an added amendment that further strengthens the bill. H 4681 will now come before the full Judiciary Committee. This legislation would remove the ability of local governments to restrict the use, sale, or transportation of firearms during a state of emergency, and would also prohibit South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) from releasing the personal information of Right-to-Carry (RTC) permit holders unless the request for the information is part of an investigation by law enforcement. Please contact the members of the House Judiciary Committee and urge them to support H 4681. A list of the members of the Judiciary Committee can be found by going to www.scstatehouse.net/html-pages/housecommlst.html#jud TEXAS P rimary runoff elections will be held on Tuesday, April 11. Please check www.nrapvf.org to see whether a runoff election is being held in your area and to see how the candidates measure up on issues of importance to gun owners and sportsmen. Spread the word to your family, friends, and co-workers about the primary runoff elections, because every vote counts!

    Question:
just tell me if it's good or not and please read it! how can i make it better?? Do you know how and for what reasons the first 13 colonies of North America were found? Many of us today don’t know why these colonies were established, but we should because it’s an extremely important event in history. Many of the first settlers in the North America came from England, they came for reasons such as these: wanted land to plant on, religious freedom, wanted to become rich or famous, needed a new beginning, wanted to escape paying debts and others. The first successful settlement was Jamestown, Virginia and then other colonies arose. The 13 colonies of North America are: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut (New England Colonies), New York, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania (Middle Colonies), Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia (Southern Colonies). Each of these colonies have different laws, government, religious beliefs, way of life and how they were set up. First, lets talk about the New England Colonies and the first successful settlement Jamestown, Virginia. During the 1580s English had tried a couple of times to establish a colony on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, but their attempts failed. Later, The Virginia Company was developed, it was a joint-stock company. In December 1606 they began their journey and on April 1607 they entered the Chesapeake Bay. They named their new settlement Jamestown in honor of their king who granted them the right to organize settlement. The colony was build on a peninsula so it could defend itself from attack but many died do to disease, hard labor, weather and hunger. With the Virginian leader John Smith the colony survived 2 years, but it was later John Rolfe who learned how to grow tobacco and saved the colony. Virginia had made a great profit growing tobacco, then many others came to the colony and House of Burgesses was formed to let people have a say in their government. Groups of people came to the New England Colonies in order to find religious freedom. At that time many people disagreed with the practices of the Anglican Church and wanted to reform it, those people were called Puritans. Others who wanted to leave and set up their own churches were called Separatists (Pilgrims). Separatists were later persecuted in England which caused them to flee to Netherlands. They did not stay their long causing to lack of jobs, so they made an arrangement with the Virginia Company to settle in North America for free religious practice. One of the New England Colonies is Massachusetts. It was founded for religious freedom by John Carver, William Bradford and John Winthrop, and settled during 1620-1630. Second colony is New Hampshire, it was founded because of profit of trade and fish by Ferdinando Gorges and John Mason and settled in c.1620. Another colony is Rhode Island, which was founded for religious freedom by Roger Williams in 1636. Last of the colonies is Connecticut which was founded in 1635 by Thomas Hooker because of profit from fur trade, farming; religious and political freedom. Second, the Middle Colonies, that also play a huge role. The first colony is New York, it was founded by the Dutch settlers in1624 to expand trade. The colony had a really an excellent harbor that the English wanted to acquire. So in 1664 they attacked and Peter Stuyvesant who was the governor surrendered because he was not prepared for the battle. King Charles II the gave this colony to his brother Duke of York, who renamed it New York. New York became a proprietary colony. Later, the colony became widely populated and demanded a representative government. The English government allowed New York to elect a legislature starting in 1691. A different colony is New Jersey, it was founded by John Berkeley and George Carteret during 1638 and gained profit from selling land. The colony did not gain much success and became a royal colony. Another colony is Delaware, it was founded by Swedish settlers in 1638 in order to expand trade. Last Middle Colony is Pennsylvania founded by William Penn in 1682 and gained profit by selling land/ religious freedom. Penn belonged to a Protestant group of dissenters called Quakers. They believed that everyone was equal in god’s view, had toleration towards other beliefs and were pacifists. Penn wrote the city’s first constitution and believed that settlers should pay for land(since it’s the Native America’s). He also encouraged others to come by advertising in different languages and granted the colonists the right to elect representatives to the legislative assembly. Finally, The Southern Colonies that were founded for different reasons. The colony of Maryland was lead by Cecil Calvert son of George Calvert who always wanted to create a safe place for the Catholics. Cecil had sent two of his brothers to rule the colony when he gained it in1634. They at first turned to tobacco as the main crop knowing it saved Virginia, but planted corn as well. The city Baltimore founded in 1729 had became Maryland’s largest port and settlement. As you know there were conflicts between colonies and one was the boundary between Maryland and Pennsylvania. It was soon resolved but another conflict arose when Calverts had welcomed Protestants in Maryland. As you know the colony of Virginia became very wealthy and it kept on growing. William Berkeley had made an agreement that for a piece of land he would keep his settlers out of the Native American lands. Nathaniel Bacon, a leader of the western part of Virginia did not agree. He and others had settled in Native American lands and set fire to the capital Jamestown. It was known as the greatest rebel ever. Bacon’s sudden illness and death was the only thing that kept him from taking charge of Virginia. A new proprietary colony was set up called Carolina. It was ruled by eight prominent members of kings court. They divided the colony and each ruled one part. John Locke was the one to write constitution for the colony. The people of the colonies disagreed and went they’re separate ways creating North Carolina and South Carolina. The Carolina’s was the colony who had many rice fields and more than half of the population were enslaved Africans. In 1729 the Carolinas became two royal colonies. The last colony and final colony is Georgia. It was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe for religious freedom; protection against Spanish Florida and a safe home for debtors. This was a safe colony if you had not payed your debts. In Conclusion, I hope that you understand how important it is to know about the history of these colonies and reasons for their findings. Each of the colony had something different about it and unique. Each colony also has different religions, crops, culture and clothing. This all depends on where and how the colony was developed. From this essay you should have learned who was the founder of the colony, why it was established and in what year it was set up.

    Answer:
It's decent, but not exceeding. First off, I wouldn't start with a question such as yours. Make it interesting. Grab the readers attention rather then just state the boring facts. I am in 8th grade and we recently finished a lesson on the 13 Colonies, and all of your information is well-organized and correct. However, try to use different transitions other than, next, second, in conclusion.I also noted that your second paragraph was a bit lengthy. Try dividing it into different sections rather than one big blob. In your sentences I noticed you used the term 'and' a lot and words such as "another colony." In my opinion, that is not a very formal way of writing. In you concluding paragraph, you stated that you hoped readers understanded the concept of your piece. I don't think you should type whether or not they learned anything or not. But, you did sum up your points which is good. Overall, you are a good writer and are straight to to point. However, I suggest you put a bit more descriptive and engaging words in your piece to make readers more interested. You simply just state fact after fact after fact. I hope this helped you in a way! Keep up the good work. - Sara

Mormons respectfully I ask you"DO YOU KNOW THESE THINGS"
    Question:
First of all I will use the King James version of the Bible even though I prefer the new living translation. The Bible clearly tells us how to identify a false prophit. Deu 18:22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that [is] the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, [but] the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. Now look at some of the things you founders have said in the name of the Lord. ( if you dare) lets start with Joe Smith Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormons, claimed to be a prophet of God. Was he a prophet of the true and living God? There are two ways to find out. First, compare what he says to Scripture and if what the Prophet teaches contradict Scripture, then he is false. The second way is to examine any prophecies that he has made. If a single prophecy fails, then the person is a false prophet. Please note that having several fulfilled prophecies and even a single false prophecy still means that the person is not a true prophet of God. The test for a prophet is not if he gets them most right, but all right. The Bible tells us... "But the prophet who shall speak a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he shall speak in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’ 21 "And you may say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?’ 22 "When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him," (Deut. 18:20-22). emphasis added. We can see that the criteria of a true prophet is not failing when predicting the future. This is because God, who is outside of time and the creator of the universe, makes no mistakes when he tells us what will happen. Those prophets whom he has called will not make a mistake and prophesy the future, since to do so would mean the person is not speaking on God's behalf. Therefore, if anyone claims to be a prophet of God and speaks in the name of God and gives a prophecy that fails, then the person is not of God. Did Joseph Smith make any prophecies? Yes he did. Here are just a few of his false prophecies. False prophecies of Joseph Smith History of the Church Prophecy about Jesus return within 56 years - "President Smith then stated that the meeting had been called, because God had commanded it; and it was made known to him by vision and by the Holy Spirit. He then gave a relation of some of the circumstances attending us while journeying to Zion--our trials, sufferings; and said God had not designed all this for nothing, but He had it in remembrance yet; and it was the will of God that those who went to Zion, with a determination to lay down their lives, if necessary, should be ordained to the ministry, and go forth to prune the vineyard for the last time, or the coming of the Lord, which was nigh--even fifty-six years should wind up the scene." (History of the Church, Vol. 2:189) See context. Jesus did not return within fifty-six years when 1891 arrived. Doctrine and Covenants Prophecy that the temple would be built in Missouri within Smith's Generation - "Yea, the word of the Lord concerning his church, established in the last days for the restoration of his people, as he has spoken by the mouth of his prophets, and for the gathering of his saints to stand upon Mount Zion,i which shall be the city of New Jerusalem. 3 Which city shall be built, beginning at the temple lot, which is appointed by the finger of the Lord, in the western boundaries of the State of Missouri, and dedicated by the hand of Joseph Smith, Jun., and others with whom the Lord was well pleased. 4 Verily this is the word of the Lord, that the city New Jerusalem shall be built by the gathering of the saints, beginning at this place, even the place of the temple, which temple shall be reared in this generation. 5 For verily this generation shall not all pass away until an house shall be built unto the Lord, and a cloud shall rest upon it, which cloud shall be even the glory of the Lord, which shall fill the house... 31 Therefore, as I said concerning the sons of Moses for the sons of Moses and also the sons of Aaron shall offer an acceptable offering and sacrifice in the house of the Lord, which house shall be built unto the Lord in this generation, upon the consecrated spot as I have appointed." (Doctrines and Covenants 84:2-5,31.) See context. The Mormons were driven out of Jackson County in 1833. They were not gathered there in accordance to this prophecy dealing with building the temple. The prophecy clearly states that the generation present when the prophecy was given would not pass away until the temple was built at the western boundaries of the state of Missouri which is in Independence. This clearly failed. All Nations would be involved in the American Civil War - "Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls; 2 And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place. 3 For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and then war shall be poured out upon all nations," (Doctrine and Covenants 87:1-3). See context This is clearly another false prophecy since all nations did not get involved in the American Civil War. Prophesy that the earth will tremble and the sun be hidden in "not many days": "For not many days hence and the earth shall tremble and reel to and fro as a drunken man; and the sun shall hide his face, and shall refuse to give light; and the moon shall be bathed in blood; and the stars shall become exceedingly angry, and shall cast themselves down as a fig that falleth from off a fig-tree," (Doctrine and Covenants 88:87) See context The sun hasn't yet been hidden nor has the moon hidden its face. This prophecy was given on 12/27/1832. "Not many days hence"? Since the writing of this article on 6/22/06, it has been 63,364 days or 173 years, 5 months, 26 days. I think that 63,364 days is more than "not many days". For reference to January 1, 2000 it was 61,000 days (even), or 167 years, 5 days. Pearl of Great Price Prophecy that Isaiah 11 was about to be fulfilled - "In addition to these, he quoted the eleventh chapter of Isaiah, saying that it was about to be fulfilled. He quoted also the third chapter of Acts, twenty-second and twenty-third verses, precisely as they stand in our New Testament. He said that that prophet was Christ; but the day had not yet come when “they who would not hear his voice should be cut off from among the people,” but soon would come," (Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith, History, verse 40). See context Isaiah 11:6-9 says, "And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the kid, And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them. 7 Also the cow and the bear will graze; Their young will lie down together; And the lion will eat straw like the ox. 8 And the nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra, And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den. 9 They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea." This has not yet been fulfilled. The wolf is not dwelling with the lamb, the calf and the lion are not together, nor are the cow and bear grazing together. The lion is not eating straw like an ox. Nursing children are not playing in the dens of cobras. Interesting Quotes from Brigham Young the Second Prophet of the Mormon Church Brigham Young said your own blood must atone for some sins. "There is not a man or woman, who violates the covenants made with their God, that will not be required to pay the debt. The blood of Christ will never wipe that out, your own blood must atone for it . . . " (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 3, page 247; see also, Vol. 4, pp. 53-54, 219-220.) Brigham Young said you must confess Joseph Smith as a prophet of God in order to be saved. "...and he that confesseth not that Jesus has come in the flesh and sent Joseph Smith with the fullness of the Gospel to this generation, is not of God, but is Antichrist." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 9, p. 312). Brigham Young said his discourses are as good as Scripture. "I say now, when they [his discourses] are copied and approved by me they are as good Scripture as is couched in this Bible . . . " (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 13, p. 264; see also page 95.) Brigham Young said he had never given any counsel that was wrong. "I am here to answer. I shall be on hand to answer when I am called upon, for all the counsel and for all the instruction that I have given to this people. If there is an Elder here, or any member of this Church, called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who can bring up the first idea, the first sentence that I have delivered to the people as counsel that is wrong, I really wish they would do it; but they cannot do it, for the simple reason that I have never given counsel that is wrong; this is the reason." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 16, page 161.) Brigham Young compared his sermons with scripture. "I know just as well what to teach this people and just what to say to them and what to do in order to bring them into the celestial kingdom...I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call Scripture. Let me have the privilege of correcting a sermon, and it is as good Scripture as they deserve. The people have the oracles of God continually." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 13, p. 95.) Brigham Young said you are damned if you deny polygamy. "Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 3, p. 266). Also, "The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 11, page 269). Brigham Young said you can't get to the highest heaven without Joseph Smith's consent. "...no man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 7, p. 289). Brigham Young said God was progressing in knowledge. "God himself is increasing and progressing in knowledge, power, and dominion, and will do so, worlds without end." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p. 120). Brigham Young boasted. "What man or woman on earth, what spirit in the spirit-world can say truthfully that I ever gave a wrong word of counsel, or a word of advice that could not be sanctioned by the heavens? The success which has attended me in my presidency is owing to the blessings and mercy of the Almighty . . . " (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 12, p. 127). Brigham Young said that we are obligated to keep all the laws and ordinances of God. "Some of you may ask, ‘Is there a single ordinance to be dispensed with? Is there one of the commandments that God has enjoined upon the people, that he will excuse them from obeying?' Not one, no matter how trifling or small in our own estimation. No matter if we esteem them non-essential, or least or last of all the commandments of the house of God, we are under obligation to observe them." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 8, p. 339). Brigham Young said Jesus' birth was as natural as ours. "The birth of the Savior was as natural as the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood--was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 8, p. 115). Brigham Young said that God the Father and Mary 'do it.' "When the time came that His first-born, the Saviour, should come into the world and take a tabernacle, the Father came Himself and favoured that spirit with a tabernacle instead of letting any other man do it." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 4, Page 218.) "The birth of the Savior was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood -- was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 8, page 115). Note: the late Bruce McConkie who was a member of the First Council of the Seventy stated "There is nothing figurative about his paternity; he was begotten, conceived and born in the normal and natural course of events..." (Mormon Doctrine, by Bruce McConkie, page 742.) Brigham Young said that Jesus was not begotten by the Holy Spirit "I have given you a few leading items upon this subject, but a great deal more remains to be told. Now, remember from this time forth, and for ever, that Jesus Christ was not begotten by the Holy Ghost." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 1, page 51). Brigham Young taught that Adam was God. "Now hear it, O inhabitants of the earth, Jew and Gentile, Saint and sinner! When our father Adam came into the garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is Michael, the Archangel, the Ancient of Days! about whom holy men have written and spoken -- He is our Father, and our God, and the only God with whom we have to do. Every man upon the earth, professing Christians or non professing, must hear it, and will know it sooner or later." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 1, page 50). Brigham Young made a false prophecy? "In the days of Joseph [Smith] it was considered a great privilege to be permitted to speak to a member of Congress, but twenty-six years will not pass away before the Elders of this Church will be as much thought of as the kings on their thrones." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 4, page 40.) Brigham Young comments about blacks "You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly deprived of nearly all the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind....Cain slew his brother. Can might have been killed, and that would have put a termination to that line of human beings. This was not to be, and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 7, page 290). "In our first settlement in Missouri, it was said by our enemies that we intended to tamper with the slaves, not that we had any idea of the kind, for such a thing never entered our minds. We knew that the children of Ham were to be the "servant of servants," and no power under heaven could hinder it, so long as the Lord would permit them to welter under the curse and those were known to be our religious views concerning them." (Journal of Discourses, Volume 2, page 172.) "Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so." (Journal of Discourses, Volume 10, page 110.) Some of the Many Changes in the Book of Mormon Joseph Smith said "that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book" (History of the Church, Vol. 4, page 461). Allegedly it was translated by the power of God. Nevertheless, it has some 4,000 changes in it. Some are mere spelling corrections, but others are significant changes. Why is this so if the book of Mormon was translated accurately by the hand of God? Why would the Mormon Church continue to change the work even after Joseph Smith's death? Following is a very small sample of the changes in the Book of Mormon. Check them out for yourself. 1830 Edition of the Book of Mormon1981 Edition of the Book of Mormon 1 Nephi 11:18"And he said unto me, Behold, the virgin which thou seest, is the mother of [. . . . ] God, after the manner of the flesh"And he said unto me: Behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God, after the manner of the flesh." 1 Nephi 11:21"And the angel said unto me, behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the [. . . . ] Eternal Father!...""And the angel said unto me: Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father!..." 1 Nephi 11:32"...And I looked and beheld the Lamb of God, that he was taken by the people; yea, [. . . . ] the Everlasting God, was judged of the world...""...And I looked and beheld the Lamb of God, that he was taken by the people; yea, the Son of the everlasting God was judged of the world..." 1 Nephi 13:40"...and shall make known to all kindreds, tongues, and people, that the Lamb of God is [. . . . ] the Eternal Father and the Savior of the world...""...and shall make known to all kindreds, tongues, and people that the Lamb of God is the Son of the Eternal Father, and the Savior of the World..." 1 Nephi 19:20"...for had not the Lord been merciful, to shew unto me concerning them, even as he had prophets of old; [. . . . ] for he surely...""...for had not the Lord been merciful, to show unto me concerning them, even as he had prophets of old, I should have perished also." 1 Nephi 20:1 changed in 1964 ed."Hearken and hear this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah,[. . . . ] which swear...""Hearken and hear this, O house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, or out of the waters of baptism, who swear..." Answer:
And what did Jesus say when His disciples showed your attitude? John 10:38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us. 39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. 40 For he that is not against us is on our part. 41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

    Why Americans are so Single?
    Question:
Last year, the New York Times published the results of its census analysis stating that 51% of U.S. women live without a spouse. However, Sperling's BestPlaces discovered this might not be the whole story. "The Times came to some insightful conclusions with their analysis," said Bert Sperling, lead researcher for Sperling's BestPlaces. "We made some different assumptions to more closely reflect our national lifestyle where fifteen year-old girls aren't commonly expected to get married." The New York Times used, at that time, the latest demographics from the Census Bureau, including women above age fourteen who were unmarried or separated. Indeed, according to a University of Texas survey, the average age of women at their first marriage is 26. Sperling's firm looked at similar Census data, but restricted its analysis to single, widowed, and divorced women age 25-64. Without this cap on the age range, places with higher concentrations of elderly people would show a misleading number of single women. Sperling's conclusion is significantly different than the New York Times. In the 379 metro areas nationwide, 34% of women 25-64 are single. Despite all the attention to this new milestone for single women, the difference between the number of single men and women is not as great as one might think. Nationally, 32% of men are single. Where do the lonely hearts live? "As interesting as the nation as a whole is trending," Sperling said, "we want to see which places had the greatest percentage of single men and women." Sperling's firm broke down the data by metro area, revealing interesting patterns on where singles live. San Francisco seems to attract single people like a good pickup line, if there is such a thing. Compared to every other metro area in the U.S., the San Francisco region, which includes areas south like San Mateo and Redwood City, has the highest percentage of single people. Detroit, with 43% singles, is second only to San Francisco. New York, and Boston round out the top four. Most southern cities are not flush with single people. Those cities in southern states that have more singles are homes to colleges, where students might choose to remain after graduation, or are known for their nightlife. New Orleans, Austin, and a handful of Florida cities all have more singles than the national average. "There has to be a lot going on for singles," said David Evans in a phone interview with BestPlaces. Evans is an online dating researcher based in Boston, a city that is 39% single. Evans said Boston has the key factors for single living. "It's a college town, it has nightlife, culture, and lots of jobs." Whether by choice or circumstance, many are living in some of the biggest cities, surrounded by millions, and still find themselves alone. The Top Ten "Solo Cities:" RankMetro% Single 1San Francisco, CA44.7 2Detroit, MI44 3New York, NY39.8 4Boston, MA39.2 5New Orleans, LA39.1 6Los Angeles, CA37.7 7Fort Lauderdale, FL37.2 8Las Vegas, NV37 9Miami, FL36.9 10Albuquerque, NM36.8 Where are the couples? People tend couple up more in the smaller towns, though there are big city outliers like Edison, NJ, and Nassau-Suffolk metro area in New York. Many places that view themselves as traditional boast marriage rates above the national average. A few college cities buck the trend of having more singles. North Carolina cities, Raleigh and Charlotte--each home to a university with more than 20,000 students--are in the bottom 25% by percentage of singles. Logan, UT, and Provo, UT, both have fewer than 20% singles, the lowest in the country. Texas cities McAllen and Laredo have similarly low numbers of single people. Top Ten Least Single Cities RankMetro% Single 1McAllen, TX23 2Lake County, IL25.1 3Nassau, NY26.9 4Edison, NJ28 5Poughkeepsie, NY28 6Bakersfield, CA28.3 7El Paso, TX28.4 8Allentown, PA-NJ28.4 9Salt Lake City, UT28.5 10Oxnard, CA28.5 What about that gender gap? Bars and clubs that promote the ubiquitous "Ladies Night" might be surprised to find their city's gender gap favors the men. Since the U.S. has about 6% more single women than single men, many cities tip toward more women. Evans said many dating events take care of any imbalance by "stocking the pond," applying a quota so the number of participants of each sex are equal. Still, where there is an imbalance, the dating life is easier on one gender. Online dating companies are cluing into the gender gap. "All the sites are getting to where the ads are different in geographic areas," Evans said. When advertising on TV, the radio, or the Internet, personals websites can alter the ads based on whether the city is likely to have a dearth of one gender. An effect of this, Evans said, is that people perceive that there are plenty of fish in the sea.
