- Charleston's night of holiday jazz
Wednesday, November 26, 2008, an editorial in the Charleston Post and Courier. Editorial Endorses Night of Big Band Jazz Entertainment Times are tough for local arts organizations, and in that context, the community should extend an especially rousing welcome to perhaps the youngest member of the group. The Charleston Jazz Orchestra will perform a program of holiday music, including Duke Ellington's "Nutcracker Suite," tonight at the Charleston Music Hall. Big bands have long struggled to survive as musical tastes have changed and the youthful audience for "swing" has diminished. But the 20-member CJO, created this year, is happy evidence that the tradition prevails. The orchestra, conducted by Charlton Singleton, hopes to serve as Charleston's "big band" for years to come. It owes its existence to dedicated musicians who want to keep mainstream jazz alive. And like other arts groups, its continued viability will depend on audience interest and community support. "We think we have among the best, if not the best, jazz musicians in the area," said local jazz historian Jack McCray, who is serving as impresario for the event. Proceeds will benefit ongoing efforts to promote jazz education and preserve its history in Charleston. As Mr. McCray has noted, Charleston was a founding center for jazz - the most American of musical forms. On our Commentary page, George Stevens, director of the Community Foundation, details the difficulties of operating nonprofits, including arts organizations, in the current economic climate. Musical groups are among those shining "points of light," and offer much of what makes life most enjoyable. Enjoy listening to the Charleston Jazz Orchestra tonight.

City DescriptionCharleston is a city in Charleston county in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It is the largest city and county seat of Charleston County. The city was founded as Charlestown or Charles Towne, Carolina in 1670, and moved to its present location (Oyster Point) from a location on the west bank of the Ashley River in 1680; it adopted its present name in 1783. In 1690, Charleston was the fifth largest city in North America, and remained among the ten largest cities in the United States through the 1840 census. Charleston is known as The Holy City due to the prominence of churches on the low-rise cityscape, particularly the numerous steeples which dot the city's skyline, and for the fact that it was one of the few cities in the original thirteen colonies to provide religious tolerance to the French Huguenot Church. In fact, it is still the only city in the U.S. with such a church. Charleston was also one of the first colonial cities to allow Jews to practice their faith without restriction. Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, founded in 1749, is the fourth oldest Jewish congregation in the continental United States. Brith Shalom Beth Israel is the oldest Orthodox shul in the South, founded by ... How big was the Alligator that fell out of the sky on July 2, 1843 in Charleston, South Carolina? Question: On July 2, 1843 in Charleston, South Carolina, during a thunderstorm, an alligator fell out of the sky, landing on Anson Street. Does anyone know how big this Alligator was, and can you site a specific website or reference material. Thanks!!!

I have heard of fish falling out of the sky, but thas was a result of a strong water spout. Aligaters weigh what 150-200+ pounds. I mot sure if this actually happened or not, hard telling, anything could happen. But I'm pretty sure it involved a water spout.

What area in Charleston South Carolina is the best to live in? Question: I'm looking to move there this summer and I want to know which area has the best crime rate and schools and stuff like that. for my two boys ages 11 and 7 we are coming from Portland Oregon and have never been to Charleston before.
Any help would be great.
Answer:
I am originally from Charleston and I will have to agree with Huguenot that North Charleston really isn't the best place to live. I don't think he really had anything to apologize about because historically the area has been a bad area. It doesn't have anything to do with minorities because all charlestonians know that the area got its reputation from the working class whites that lived there back in the '60s and '70s. Even now the crime rate there is deplorable and it definitely wouldn't be the best place to raise children. I think that Mt. Pleasant would be nice if you could find something affordable. There are plenty of affordable options in that area, especially homes for rent and apartments. Also, you might want to consider Summerville like M has suggested. It does have a much better school system than Charleston county. Like Allison says, alot of people in Charleston do tend to look down on outsiders, but I don't think it is personal. Southerners have been put down by northerners and hollywood for so long that they resent the invasion of their cities by northerners. They obviously would like to keep their culture and that is becoming harder and harder with the northern influence that is constantly overshadowing anything southern. You have to take into consideration that anywhere you go, natives look down on newcomers. Exactly the way most northerners feel superior to southerners.

What is the average cost of living in Charleston, South Carolina? Question: Im thinking about moving there and want to know what the place is like?
Answer:
I agree with both the above answers...cost of living varies in Charleston though...it depends on your lifestyle. Keep in mind Charleston is surrounded by alot of quickly building towns and Charleston is not the only expanding business district in this state. You can be anywhere in the state in about 3 hours.
Just to give you some of the attributes of Carolina living...I added a few things that may be points of interest.
South Carolina is a great place to live. We have everything. Beaches, lakes, mountains, water parks, historic sites, plantations, battleships, racetracks, shopping, a multitude of restaurants, golf courses, (adult or miniature) and festivals.
Trying to keep to a budget can be stressful. Most of South Carolina's historic sites are inexpensive to see (but well worth the trip). From Rainbow Row & the Battery in downtown Charleston, to the U.S.S. Yorktown (retired aircraft carrier) & Fort's Moultrie & Sumter in the Harbor. From Hilton Head (Golf Course & Resort)& Beaufort, (shrimpboats & Gullah traditions) to Edisto Island, Isle of Palms & Sullivan's Island (small uncrowded beaches) to Boone Hall Plantation in Mt. Pleasent (Many movie's have been shot here) to Brook Green Gardens (beautiful flowers & sculptures). Myrtle Beach is a legend;.. Water parks, Ripleys Aquarium, Nascar Cafe, Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock Cafe(in the shape of a pyramid-(you can go in & look around without eating- *food is pricey)...They are opening a Hard Rock Theme Park there in June also)..Alligator Adventure & the boardwalk at Barefoot Landing, House of Blues, Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede (full course dinner plus a live cowboy/indian old west show while you eat)..Lots of bars, including the Bowery on Ocean Blvd, where country group Alabama got their start.
Darlington Raceway & Darlington Dragstrip are just 70 miles from the beach and the big boys of Nascar race there every May, Mother's Day weekend usually.
Columbia (state capital) still has cannon balls lodged in the state house that can be seen from the street. A huge zoo & botanical garden. The mountain region has water falls, hiking, canoeing, old west themed parks/towns. Glorious scenery & even snow skiing in some places.
Various festivals happen around the state at different times of the year.(Most are in May & June). Flowertown festival (Summerville) is beautiful. Grits festival (St. George) is all about the grits..Hell Hole Swamp festival (Jamestown) is about old time moon shine runners..Catfish festival (St. Stephens)...The Shrimp Festival (McClellanville)...The Okra festival (Irmo) is believe it or not a festival dedicated to ..OKRA...--just to name a few.
Tempatures run from hot (muggy & buggy) in the summer to mid 30's & a few snow flurries in the winter. Spring are beautiful, but the pollen gets bad & the falls here are glorious.
Hope this helps...& good luck!!

Where is a good place to stay in Charleston South Carolina? Question: some place that is centrally located where you can walk to the sights.
Answer:
Depends on how much you want to spend. The Charleston Place is the cream of the crop and is located right in the heart of downtown within walking distance of waterfront park, the market, the battery etc. I'm pretty sure there is also a holiday inn right next door that will be a little bit more affordable.
