City DescriptionChapin is a town in Lexington County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 628 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Chapin is located at 34°9′57″N, 81°20′50″W (34.165783, -81.347260).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²), of which, 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²) of it is land and 0.55% is water.
While Chapin is a part of Lexington County, the creation of Lake Murray, South Carolina by the Dreher Shoals Dam cut Chapin off from the rest of the county, creating something of an exclave.
The town is named after Martin Chapin, who built the Chapin Hotel in the 1880's along the new rail line that ran from Columbia, South Carolina to Newberry, South Carolina.
As of the census of 2000, there were 628 people, 249 households, and 193 families residing in the town. The population density was 349.6 people per square mile (134.7/km²). There were 261 housing units at an average density of 145.3/sq mi (56.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 92.04% White, 6.37% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.48% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more ...
