City DescriptionBeaufort is a city in Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States, situated on the Beaufort River. Chartered in 1711, it is the second-oldest city in South Carolina, behind Charleston. The city's population was 12,950 in the 2000 census (46,227 total pop. of Beaufort Urban Cluster). It is the county seat of Beaufort County and part of the Hilton Head Island–Beaufort Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Beaufort (pronounced /ˈbjuːfɚt/ "byew-furt", unlike its counterpart in North Carolina) is located on Port Royal Island, in the heart of the Sea Islands and Lowcountry. The city is renowned for its impressive harbor along the Port Royal Sound, and for maintaining a historic character through its impressive antebellum architecture and streetscapes, which have helped it attract tourists and new residents alike.
Before the arrival of European explorers, the Lowcountry region was inhabited by small Native American tribes that have since yielded their names to geography, including the Yemasee, the Coosawhatchie, the Coosaw, the Datha (Dataw), the Edisto, the Ashepoo, the Kiowa (Kiawah), and Combahee. Several of these tribes were rivals and intertribal alliances and attacks occurred frequently ... Read MoreCity Contained By:- Beaufort County

Can someone help me find jobs in Beaufort, South Carolina? Question: I am a new mother looking to support her newborn child and rent an apartment.
Answer:
The South Carolina page of Job-Hunt.org contains over 40 links to SC job resources and employers. More are added often. It is worth checking out -
http://www.job-hunt.org/jobs/southcarolina.shtml
Job-Hunt lists the Craig's List sites for Columbia and Charleston, and there are some new ones. Go here -
http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/sc - to pick out the one closest to Beaufort.
If you aren't familiar with it, Craig's List is a giant online classified ads site, organized in chronological order by category. Be sure to look at both "jobs" and "gigs" (which are part-time or short-term jobs). It also has apartment for rent listings.
Craig's List is free for employers to post their openings, mostly, so you'll find a bunch of junk there (make millions working from home in your spare time, etc.). Just ignore the junk - if it looks too good to be true, it is - and focus on what you want.
Also, see the following local resources specifically for Beaufort:
* Beaufort Gazette classifieds online -
http://www.beaufortgazette.com/classifieds/
* County of Beaufort employment -
http://www.bcgov.net/EmployeeServices/employment.php
* Greater Beaufort Chamber of Commerce member directory (think of it as a catalog of potential employers) -
http://www.beaufortsc.org/members/members_cat_list.php
* Beaufort County Public School District -
http://web.beaufort.k12.sc.us/
* South Carolina Employment Security Commission, Beaufort Workforce Center -
http://www.sces.org/loff/beaufort.htm You may find that you qualify for some training or other support. Check them out.
Remember, don't pay anyone for a job and don't give anyone a copy of your SSN card or your SSN.
Good luck! You are a mother - you are a woman in charge! You will be fine!

how far is it from washington north carolina to beaufort south carolina?
Answer:
It is about 375 miles which takes about six hours of driving. To make the trip, you have to get out of Washington heading west on Route 264 toward Greenville and Wilson until you catch Highway 95 shortly after Wilson. You drive on Highway 95 for almost 285 miles heading south, which should take you into South Carolina. Just before you reach the State of Georgia, you should turn east on Exit 33 on Route 17 until you get to Gardens Corner. From there, you go south on Route 21 which should take you all the way to Beaufort.

Visited, Lived in, or now Residing in Beaufort, South Carolina Area?? Question: My family is thinking of relocating to the area. And we've seen pictures, but sometimes looks are deceiving. Can someone give me a rundown of the general area?
Answer:
Downtown Beaufort is historic and beautiful. There are some run down areas. I like Lady's Island and some of St Helena's Island. But some of St Helena's is run down also. You just have to pay attention.
It is a beautiful area in general but not a whole lot right there for jobs. And it is a heavy military area. That wouldn't matter to me, but it may to you.....
It wasn't as affordable as say...Myrtle Beach was a few years ago but I think with the housing slump, it is getting there.
I know I could move there and be very happy :)

trying to find infro. on Dr.Buzzard in Beaufort South Carolina?
Answer:
I found a small article about him from the library.
Bailey, Cornelia and Christena Bledsoe. God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man : A Saltwater Geechee Talks about Life on Sapelo Island. New York : Doubleday, 2000. ISBN 0-385-49376-2. In this "cultural memoir," Bailey describes the endangered daily life in a small African-American community off the Georgia coast. These descendants of enslaved West Africans kept the folkways of their ancestors, including "signs and spritis and all kinds of magic ("Dr. Buzzard" is the force of voodoo, while the "Bolito Man" embodies the powers of luck).
