It is the county seat of Aiken County, and with Augusta, Georgia is one of the two largest cities of the Central Savannah River Area. Aiken is home to the University of South Carolina at Aiken. The population was 25,337 at the 2000 census. Aiken was recognized with the All-America City Award in 1997 by the National Civic League.
Aiken is located at 33°32′58″N, 81°43′14″W (33.549397, -81.720689).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.9 km²), of which, 16.2 square miles (41.9 km²) of it is land and 0.06% is water.
Population in 1890, 2,362; in 1900, 3,414; in 1910, 3,911; in 1940, 6,168. As of the census of 2000, there were 25,337 people, 10,287 households, and 6,758 families residing in the city. Is Aiken South Carolina a nice place to live?

Thinking of moving to South Carolina and have come across Aiken during many of my internet searches. Wondering if anybody who has been there could give me any information.
Do not want to live in a big city. Willing to commute for work.

I live about 30-40 minutes from Aiken (in Georgia). I have a lot of friends who live in Aiken and I go there to various events fairly often. For a town its size, Aiken really has a lot to offer. Many cultural events, nice restaraunts, etc. If you like horses - then it is definitely the place for you. I understand tha tthe school system is really good - my friends are all very pleased with their childrens' education. I also think that the property value there is on the rise - some great neighborhoods for a solid investment. And - if you want something that is not in Aiken, the great think is that it is very convenient to both Columbia, SC and Augusta GA - both great cities!

Now if you are looking for something just a little smaller, you might also want to look into North Augusta, SC (which is very nearby). It is an area that is really growing. It sits right at the GA/SC line on the beautiful Savannah River - a great area to live!

check realtor.com this website uploads all the MLS(Multiple Listing Service used by realtors) and they usually have houses everywhere on that website. If you are having trouble contact a realtor. Is aiken south carolina a good place to raise a family ? Would I be able to find 10-20 acres of land for sale?

I dont know anything about that area.
call a real estate agent regarding the land. & talk to a direct mortg. lender or larger bank regarding financing, buying vacant land usually requires 20-30% down.
I imagine you want to build your little castle on this land, so talk to the lender about a "construction to perm" loan. to assist you construction costs.
Make sure to add in cost of bringing in utilities if they're not at or near the site (sewer or septic,, well or public water, electricity or generators) I don't know how desolate this area is.

I was just browsing through the internet looking up different historic places in the South, and came upon a government page from the city of Aiken which has REALLY SCARED ME!!!!
It gives all sorts of precautions about everything imaginable regarding personal safety. The list is too long but anyone can see it if they click on "public safety crime prevention tips for the city of Aiken".
Is it really so bad over there? It has brought back a lot of memories regarding the city where I live, MIAMI, when tourists were being murdered almost every month.... Right now all sorts of things are happening over here. At times I think this is the worst place regarding, among others, criminality, because not a single day goes by when something horrific is reported.
This aside from the usual muggings, home invasions, assaults, drive by shootings, rape, bank and drug store holdups, carjackings, shootouts with the police. Etc., etc.
Haven't checked for similar page here, but I'm concerned about
AIKEN because I'm planning on visiting_and maybe even moving there at some point.
Please, let me know if these are just extra precautions, or if it's so bad over there?

No. Every town or city website is going to give you something like that. Aiken is one of the most laid back towns here in SC. I think you should go visit!

The closest airport is probably going to be Columbia which is not very close to Aiken at all. Unless you have a small personal aircraft you probably wont be able to land at any closer airport. Aiken is a rural town.
