City DescriptionBristol is a town in and the historic county seat of Bristol County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 22,469 at the 2000 census. Bristol, a deep water seaport, is named after Bristol, England.
Bristol gained national fame despite its small size as a result of having the oldest, continuous Independence Day celebrations in the United States, earning Bristol its nickname, "America's most patriotic town" a title which is often contested, but never lost.
Bristol's diverse heritage is influenced by a strong Portuguese-American presence, mostly Azorean, and Italian-American. Major industries include boat building (and related marine industries), manufacturing and tourism. The town's school system is united with neighboring Warren, Rhode Island.
The first battle of King Philip's War took place here in 1675; although Philip was eventually defeated, a variant of his Indian name, "Metacomet", is now the name of a main road in Bristol, "Metacom" Avenue RI Route 136.
King Philip also made nearby Mount Hope (Montaup) his base of operations. "King Philip's Chair," a rocky ledge on the mountain, was a lookout site for enemy ships on Mount Hope Bay. After that war concluded, the town ... Read MoreCity Contained By:- Bristol County

Questions Possibly Related to Bristol, Rhode IslandProvided By Y! Answers
Nice restaurants in Bristol, Rhode Island? (Or anywhere near there...Providence, Newport, etc.)? Question: Alright so. My boyfriend and I will have been together for two years in October. He is currently attending Roger Williams University as a Freshman while I am starting my Senior year of High school in Massachusetts. We're maintain the 'long distance relationship' by just talking to each other every night and I go up and visit him every noe and then. We both have no interest in any other people and we both care about each other a lot.
ANYWAYS. For our two year, I wanted to drive my car up to his school (I'm staying the night the weekend of our Anniversary) and take him out to a nice restaurant and buy him dinner. He always buys me food and stuff so I want it to be my treat). I also wanted to take him to a pretty beach or something and just look at the stars, since that is sort of our thing.
Does anyone know any really nice restaurants in the area? Anywhere close by, I mean I don't want to drive an hour but somewhere nice maybe near a beach or something in either Bristol, Providence, or Newport. Not TOO expensive, although I know most places will be because of the tourism, but anywhere is fine. :)
Thanks!
Answer:
Dani, I've located a local list of restaurants that might help. You can drill down the Rhode Island results by cities nearby to you. If you visit several of the restaurants you can narrow down wich one would work best for you. http://www.restaurantreviewsratings.com/Rhode-Island-Restaurants. html

in rhode island, there is a place called Newport. anyone know of it? Question: newport is near bristol, rhode island that has a wonderful park in it.
Answer:
Newport is a wonderful place. It was the summer resort for the rich. In the 19th century many wealthy people had the best architects build elaborate mansions that they called "cottages"
They were very incredibly elaborate. For example "The Breakers","The Elms", "Marble House". These mansions can be visited today. The various Vanderbuilts were competing with each other for the most opulent mansions. Also Newport is a great sports mecca. There is yachting, tennis, boating, etc. It is
home to the Tennis Hall of Fame. It is also historic with several religious buildings like Trinity Church.

Looking for death certificate/maiden name of Mrs. Emily Devol, died 1903, Rhode Island? Question: I have been searching for the maiden name of my ancestor Emily F., who married Thomas Russell Devol. I know from her gravestone that she was born in 1819 and died in 1903. According to the census, she was born in Rhode Island. Her first known residence is Bristol, RI, where 6 of 7 of her children were born. The family moved to La Crosse county, Wisconsin by 1864, where her youngest was born. Emily, Thomas, and some of the children moved back to Rhode Island and Thomas died there in 1876. Emily's last known residence was in East Providence and she was buried along with Thomas and a couple of sons at Grace Church Cemetery in Providence. I have no idea if the F. in her name is her middle name or maiden last name.
I tried to get her death certificate from the RI Department of Health, thinking that there may be a chance that it would have her maiden name or parents on it. But they said that they don't keep certificates that far back but that the county may have it. Does anybody know who keeps the death certificates for Providence in 1903?
Also, her daughter Emily Russell Devol died in 1926 probably in Rhode Island. Her children Ellen and Charles Henry were living in 1930 in Manhattan. Perhaps one of them would have Emily's name, but I'm not sure that I would be able to access their certificates, since I'm not in their direct line. Am I wrong? Is there a way for me to look at these certificates?
Any other ideas? I would love to know more Emily and her ancestors but this is such a huge brick wall!
To Genevievesmom:
According to info that my dad put down, the first date was his birth date but he was the son of George Washington Devol and wife Mary Bosworth. The source was a published genealogy (Bosworth Genealogy), so it could be inaccurate, though I'm little more inclined to believe the part about his parents because his eldest children were named George W. and Mary. Thanks!
