Nice Places To Live In The Northern Mountains Of Pennsylvania? Question: Hey!
I am hearing about the northern Mountains Of Pennsylvania being a really nice place to live.
I am thinking about one day movieing there.
Anyone live there or know any information about that?
Thanks.
Answer:
I assume your talking about the Pocono Mountains.
I am from that area and still live in the region.
It is an absolutely beautiful area; although, some areas built up too quickly and have had an influx of "not good" people who live in these nice areas but are into selling drugs and bring their violence and drugs here.
These are certain situated communities though.
North Pocono School District and area are really good and too far from the New York border to currently suffer from any of those problems.

Has anyone seen mountain lions in southern NY or in Pennsylvania? Question: A friend recently told me that she has seen and heard them around her farm in Southern NY....that surprised me...
Answer:
I know a guy who has seen one. I actually did my undergrad work in central PA, and we discussed this in my vertebrate zoology class. My take on the issue is that several of the sitings people have told me about are quite convincing. My classmate, for instance, had seen a brown animal with a tail almost as long as its body in a tree. The animal was roughly the size of a deer, and he observed it for quite a while. There aren't any other good candidates in the area.
However, things get a bit tricky here. If I recall correctly a state with cougars needs a management plan to preserve the population. That means they need to spend money, and no state wants to spend money on an animal they can't clearly verify is in the state, and so the state is going to require a pretty high level of evidence before they admit that cougars are in the state.
Confusing the issue, there is a trade in big cats as pets. At some point the owners discover that big cats aren't particularly safe pets and sometimes just release them, putting cougars habituated to humans into areas where wild cougar populations do not exist.
One last note on this rather long answer: there are certainly bobcats in the northeast, and I've watched people confuse the two at the Grand Canyon when the animal was no more than twenty feet away. Make sure the cougar actually possesses a long tail, which even the spotted cubs have.

looking for recording: Looking Down from the Mountain on Potter County Pennsylvania? Question: I remember seeing a record for this song (maybe 78 or 45 rpm) sometime in the early 1970's. It may have been published some time before that. I would like to find a recording of this song - digital file preferred or perhaps record or cassette tape.
Thanks!
Answer:
I'll keep searching for this song, but this is a tough one! I'll edit if I find anything. ;)
First two links are search resources you can try on your own if you'd care to. Last link is results of my search on that site.
:)
[edit: This is a Potter County website, there may be something about that song since it's about that area.

How well does a hoop house work in the shadow of a mountain? Question: I'm thinking of buying a property that lies on a 15% grade facing to the north, in Pennsylvania. There is a mountain ridge to the south that blocks out 18 degrees of the southern sky.
Is this orientation likely to be a serious impediment to getting productivity in vegetables from the hoop house? Or for other plants grown outside the greenhouse, for instance, plums?
The soil is deep and well drained.
Answer:
I do not actually understand those numbers very well. But if u get 6 or more hours of sunlight a day, the stuff will grow okay.
My plum tree does not take freeze well. i have only got plums one year out of 8 that i have noticed. my area is not as cold as yours i am pretty sure. Other varieties may be different since that is how it is for most fruit trees; some varieties will be able to tolerate different cold than others.
