Avon Lake is located at 41°30′6″N 82°0′23″W / 41.50167°N 82.00639°W / 41.50167; -82.00639 (41.501595, -82.006309).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.1 square miles (28.8 km²), all of it land.
Avon Lake was designated a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
As of the census of 2000, there were 18,145 people, 6,711 households, and 5,133 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,630.0 people per square mile (629.5/km²). There were 6,934 housing units at an average density of 622.9/sq mi (240.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.31% White, 0.45% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.96% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.25% of the population.
