City DescriptionButner is a town in Granville County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,792 at the 2000 census. Butner was managed by the state of North Carolina from 1947 through 2007. A bill passed by the North Carolina General Assembly incorporating the town was signed by Gov. Mike Easley on July 27, 2007.
It is the former site of the U.S. Army's Camp Butner, which was named for Major General Henry W. Butner (1875–1937), a North Carolina native. The area around Butner has several state and federal correctional institutions.
Butner is located at 36°8′18″N 78°45′32″W / 36.13833°N 78.75889°W / 36.13833; -78.75889 (36.138298, -78.758828).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.6 square miles (17.2 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 5,792 people, 1,438 households, and 1,009 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 873.4 people per square mile (337.3/km²). There were 1,489 housing units at an average density of 224.5/sq mi (86.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 48.58% White, 45.27% African American, 0.69% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 3.35% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. ...
