Before the arrival of Europeans, the land where Asheville now exists lay within the boundaries of Cherokee country. In 1540, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto came to the area, bringing the first European visitors in addition to European diseases which seriously depleted the native population. As the Cherokee were eventually dominated by European settlers, the area was used as an open hunting ground until the middle of the 19th century.
The history of Asheville, as a town, begins in 1784. In that year Colonel Samuel Davidson and his family settled in the Swannanoa Valley, redeeming a soldier's land grant from the state of North Carolina. Soon after building a log cabin at the bank of Christian Creek, Davidson was lured into the woods ... Read MoreCity Contained By:- Buncombe County

Who is the best for tv, internet, phone packages in the Asheville, North Carolina area? Question: Hi,
I was wondering who offers the best and most reliable tv, phone, internet packages in Asheville, North Carolina?
Answer:
well, i have comcast and they are pretty fair priced. call them and see if they are available in your area. i have what they call the 'Triple Play' plan. Its not available in all areas so u will have to give them your address. Cause like i can get it where i am, but the people on the other side of town can't. The only other one that i heard of that does that package deal is Verizon, so check them out if Comcast doesn't work out.

What is it like to live in Asheville, North Carolina? Question: I'm thinking about relocating to Asheville, NC. I'm looking for a place that is beautiful, artsy, and safe. A place that is half hip and half "Northern Exposure" ( TV show) would be ideal. Is Asheville anything like that?
Answer:
I've lived here for almost 6 years now, relocating from Atlanta. Love it but it did take about 2 years to really feel at home. I actually work downtown, am a real estate broker there, and drive home to a wonderful little place called Black Mountain. Please feel free to contact me for questions. Asheville is very safe but we do have our share of common social elements. Just a "lower-per-capita" than some other parts of the country. Even on the worst day, I can always look around and say "Thank you Great Spirit for putting me in this beautiful place". Hope this helps! Eclectic, yes, by the way!

What should I check out in Asheville, North Carolina? Question: In late September, my wife and I are spending a week in Asheville to celebrate our one year anniversary. We have been only once before and made sure to check out the Biltmore. We also had dinner at the Grove Park Inn.
I wanted to see what others more familiar with area would recommend. We're outdoorsy and love to hike, run, canoe, etc. Any advice as to local haunts, parks, minor league baseball, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Check out Lake Lure. They have a cute little boat tour that shows off the beautiful mountains, and the guides are full of charisma and knowledge about the area. Definitely one of my favorite relaxing aspects of the Asheville area.

How far is the Asheville, North Carolina airport from downtown Asheville? And best way to get into town is...?
Answer:
At the red light at the airport, turn left. Stay in the left lane and go left on interstate 26 (26 west) towards asheville. Go about 6 to 8 miles and you will approach a large interchange in which you can go on 40 west, east, or stay on 26/240. take 240/26 towards down town. stay on this highway until you approach down town and get off on patton avenue exit. this is the exit after you cross the very tall bridge near downtown. if you miss this exit, you can get off at the next 2 or 3 exits (merrimon avenue, charlotte st, so on). Getting downtown once off the exit is very easy and self explanatory. where are you going? i can point you in the right direction if you need more help; just email me. good luck. (drive time about 20 min)
