City DescriptionApex is a town in Wake County, North Carolina, a suburb of Raleigh. The population was 20,212 at the 2000 census and estimated to be 31,453 in 2007. The town motto is "The Peak of Good Living."
Apex is located at 35°43′55″N 78°51′10″W / 35.73194, -78.85278 (35.731952, -78.852878).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.6 square miles (27.5 km²), of which, 10.5 square miles (27.3 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.57%) is water.
Neighboring towns include Raleigh to the east, Cary to the north and northeast, and Holly Springs to the south.
The town of Apex was incorporated in 1873, named for its location as the highest point on the Chatham Railroad between Richmond, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida. Apex grew slowly through the succeeding decades, despite several devastating fires, including a 1912 conflagration which destroyed most of the downtown business district. The town center was rebuilt and stands to this day, now one of the most intact railroad towns in the state. I've lived in Raleigh, NC for almost 25 years. My parents have lived in South Carolina for 25 of the last 27 years, in 2 different parts of the state.
Of the two states, I prefer being right here in the Raleigh area. The people are friendly. The city is big enough that there's plenty to do but not so big that you spend all your time sitting in traffic. I'm completely unimpressed with my youngest brother's experiences in South Carolina public schools and colleges. In fact, he was much happier going to college in North Carolina, but couldn't afford the out-of-state tuition for more than 1 year.
I"ve asked my parents repeatedly to sell their house and move up here. In fact, they could buy the house next door to my daughter and s-i-l, which would give my mom and dad daily access to not only their first grandchild, but also their first GREAT-grandchild. But they love where they are in South Carolina and in their opinion Raleigh is just too big.
(My husband and I lived in Detroit and then Indianapolis before we moved here - both in the top 20 largest cities in the country at that time. Raleigh is still smaller than Indianapolis was 30 years ago!)
Anyway .... there are great places and not-so-great places in both states. I moved 7 times between the ages of 15 and 23. Staying in one city for so long let us put down roots finally. And now that there's a grandbaby just 20 minutes east of town, I'm not going anywhere.

what kind of seed did I find in NC?

i found a green seed with a nut inside in Apex North Carolina. The seed has four sides and is longer than it is wide. The shell looks has a black walnut texture but it is much smaller and smells like cardamon rather than black walnut. Does anyone know what this is?
