City DescriptionAhoskie is a town in Hertford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,523 at the 2000 census. Ahoskie is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. Ahoskie is known as the "only one" because there is no other town in the world known by the same name. The origin of the word Ahoskie was originally spelled "Ahotsky", and came from the Wyanoke Indians who entered Hertford County during the beginning of European settlement.
Ahoskie is located at 36°17′11″N 76°59′11″W / 36.28639°N 76.98639°W / 36.28639; -76.98639 (36.286439, -76.986436).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.9 km² (2.7 mi²), all land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,523 people, 1,853 households, and 1,172 families residing in the town. The population density was 656.5/km² (1,702.9/mi²). There were 2,010 housing units at an average density of 291.8/km² (756.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 37.08% White, 58.88% African American, 1.70% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.79% of the population.
