    City Description

    La Fargeville is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 588 at the 2000 census. The village is named after John La Farge, one of the early proprietors of the town. La Fargeville is in the Town of Orleans and is north of Watertown. The small hamlet has one school LaFargeville Central School that is grades K through 12. The current town supervisor is Donna Chatterton. The village was previously called "Log Mills" when it was first settled around 1816 due to the construction of a saw mill for logs. John La Farge arrived in 1826. By 1850, the village population was about 300. La Fargeville is located at 44°11′39″N 75°58′6″W / 44.19417, -75.96833 (44.194101, -75.968361). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.5 square miles (9.1 km²), of which, 3.5 square miles (9.0 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.14%) is water. The community is at the junction of New York State Route 180 and New York State Route 411 (Plank Road). County Road 181 (Plank Street) also services the village from the west.
