A man who was stranded on an island in a Long Island lagoon after his boat drifted away has been rescued. Suffolk County police say Charlie Sirico went to Fishers Island on Wednesday to work on a house. They say he was about to leave when he saw his boat floating away with his two dogs and cell phone aboard. Sirico tried swimming to the boat but couldn't make it and had to turn back. The Bay Shore resident radioed the Coast Guard and gave a vague description of his location in Great South Bay, a lagoon on the southern side of Long Island.

City DescriptionFishers Island is a hamlet located on Fishers Island in Suffolk County, New York (USA), at the eastern end of Long Island Sound. The population was 289 at the 2000 census.
Fishers Island village and the island itself are in the Town of Southold. Fishers Island has a ZIP Code (06390) associated with Connecticut.
The island was once a private estate of the Winthrop family. In spite of its proximity to Connecticut, it was confirmed to be part of New York in 1879.
Fishers Island is located at (41.261936, -72.007084).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 10.9 kmￂﾲ (4.2 miￂﾲ). 10.5 kmￂﾲ (4.1 miￂﾲ) of it is land and 0.4 kmￂﾲ (0.2 miￂﾲ) of it (3.57%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 289 people, 138 households, and 77 families residing in the hamlet. The population density was 27.6/kmￂﾲ (71.3/miￂﾲ). There were 625 housing units at an average density of 59.6/kmￂﾲ (154.2/miￂﾲ). The racial makeup of the community was 95.50% White, 1.04% African American, 1.04% Asian, and 2.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.38% of the population.
