City DescriptionBeacon is a city located in Dutchess County, New York, United States. Although the city's estimated living population is around 16,000 people, the 2000 census placed the city total population at 13,808. Beacon was named to commemorate the historic beacon fires that blazed forth from the summit of the Fishkill Mountains to alert the Continental Army about British troop movements.
The City of Beacon is located in the southwest corner of Dutchess County, in the fast growing Mid-Hudson Region. It sits 59 miles north of New York City. It is also located approximately 90 miles south of Albany.
The area occupied as Beacon was originally settled as the Villages of Matteawan and Fishkill Landing in 1709, which were among the first communities in the state. Beacon incorporated as a city in 1913, amalgamating the two villages as well as a small portion of the Hamlet of Glenham from the Town of Fishkill.
The city served a variety of roles during the Revolutionary War. It manufactured war supplies, and served as a fort and signaling point. The city's name came from signal fires that were atop nearby Beacon Mountain. During the 1800s, the city became a factory town and was known as "The Hat ... Anyone been to the Beacon Theatre New York? What is the view REALLY like-from Right Center-seating?? Question: Im currently scoping out tickets for a music concert at the Beacon theatre New York for next week.
Ive found pretty good tickets, but the only ones that seem available are ones all the way on the far Right-Center (Orchestra).
For people that have been there before-what is the view REALLY like from (far) Right Center (Orchestra)-Vs.- other areas? Pros/Cons-mostly can you really see action on the stage?
Ive heard its one of those venues where you "can see everything-no matter where youre seating"
Any help/honest opinions would be great-Thanks!
Answer:
Well it depends on the act that's playing how much you can see. It is true that the theater does have decent sight lines but the further to the sides you are the more you miss in the back of the stage area or on the sides. If it is a singer who stands at a mic in the center of the stage you will see it all, if you are dying to see every move of the drummer in the band (who are traditionally towards the rear of the set) then you may not get a clear view. If it is an act that runs all over the stage or performs quirky moves then you may miss pieces of it too and would be better off further back but more centered. But pieces are better than none so if you like the act and won't get another chance to see them then go for it.

how far is times square from the beacon hotel new york?
Answer:
Comes between 28-33 blocks given the size of Times Square. If the weather is cool and comfortable, it's a great walk (walk up North in Times Square and you will run into Central Park South, so you'll get to see that as well). Will take 30-50 minutes walk depending on your pace (and if you want to window shop along the way)
Additionally, the hotel is near the 1/2-3 lines on the subway (the red lines). The 1 train is a local-stop train and you can get off at 42nd or 50th Streets. The 2 & 3 lines are express, and you go from 42nd St (Times Sq) to 72nd St (near Beacon hotel) with no in-between stops in a matter of minutes.

Does anyone know if there is a central contact source for left luggage in a yellow cab in New York? Question: My daughter left a sleeping bag behind in a yellow cab October 2nd '06 in New York having just crossed the States with Trek America and jumped in a cab with two friends outside The Beacon Hotel to go to a cheap hostel. her friend thought she'd emptied the trunk but left the Karrrimor sleeping bag behind accidentally. Is there a central source to contact for left luggage in this kind of circumstance? Or does anyone know of an online contact board for yellow cab drivers in New York
Answer:
NYC yellow cabs are run by several independent operators. There is no central place for lost and found. You could try calling all of the yellow cab companies, but I really doubt that it will still be there. Most likely, someone else has already taken it or its been thrown out. You should just get a new sleeping bag.

Have you read this about new immigrants? Question: Newspapers seldom will publish letters to the editor which they either deem politically incorrect (read below) or which does not agree with their philosophy. This woman wrote a letter to the editor that should have been published but with your help it will get published via cyberspace!
New Immigrants
From: "David LaBonte"
My wife, Rosemary, wrote a wonderful letter to the editor of the OC Register which, of course, was not printed. So, I decided to "print" it myself by sending it out on the Internet. Pass it along if you feel so inclined.
Dave LaBonte (signed)
Written in response to a series of letters to the editor in the Orange County Register:
Dear Editor:
So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.
Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.
They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture.
Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity. Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of America as one people. When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.
And here we are in 2006 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags.
And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just yet.
(signed) Rosemary LaBonte
P. S. Pass this on to everyone you know!!! KEEP THIS LETTER MOVING!!
I hope this letter gets read by millions of people all across the nation!!
Ever onward!!
MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA
Answer:
One of the obvious flaws with this 'letter' - 'America' didn't liberate France. The whole world knows that the Allies liberated Europe from Hitler - teamwork. Funny Americans don't know that.
Secondly, how were you able to post such a long schpeel? Normally there is a word limit.
Just curious.

What does "rose beacon" mean in this metaphor? Question: Extract from page 28 of Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends & influence People", 1981, Simmon & Schuster, Inc.: New York (originally published in 1936)
"In our interpersonal relations we should never forget that all our associates are human beings and hunger for appreciation. It is the legal tender that all souls enjoy.
Try leaving a friendly trail of little sparks of gratitude on your daily trips. You will surprised how they will set small flames of friendship that will be ROSE BEACONS on your next visit.”
What was the meaning or symbolism of "rose beacon" in the 1930s?

real estate question, about to buy a condo, need help? Question: how is the real estate market right now.i heard the stock market is doing great, investors are putting money into the market and not into real estate,is this true.what is a buyers market,is it a buyers market rightnow.,buying a condo(its all i can afford)my town, beacon new york is very up and coming, after 9/11 many people from nyc r moving up here and its driving up real estate prices i guess?the condo complex is kinda saught after as its a minute walk to the trains and a few blocks from a major highway(great commuter location)condo is selling for 145,000.seller is firm, this seems to be the average price in this complex.should i wait or jump on it,im not good at negotiating,im affraid if i put in a low ball offer,i will offend seller!!he did come down from 147,000,to 145,000,and i really want this particular unit,as you can see the hudson river from the deck!!,what should i do?should i wait,or put in a lower offer?is there any good real estate sights?realtors..please help!!!
Answer:
Put in your offer. Don't worry about offending the seller, as long as you aren't 25% below his price, there should be no offense taken. This is a business transaction, this isn't personal. If you really like the condo, be prepared to pay for it, some sellers just aren't motivated to sell and are waiting for the market to come to their price.

Allman Brothers, worth seeing the 40th year reunion? Question: Allman Brothers Plotting Star-Studded 40th
DETROIT (Billboard) - The Allman Brothers Band plans to use its 2009 engagement at New York's Beacon Theatre as the focal point for the Southern blues-rock group's 40th anniversary celebration.
"We're planning a big one, man, a real big one," founding band member Gregg Allman told Billboard.com. "We're trying to get all the people we know that we've played with to come and sit in and play."
A number of performers have confirmed that they'll be part of the celebratory shows, Allman said, but he declined to offers specifics.
"I can't tell you all the secrets," Allman said with a laugh. "Just think about all the people we've played with. We're shooting to get all of them. Of course, people are on tour, but not usually so much in March as they would be, say, in August."
The Allmans' 2009 return to the Beacon -- where their spring multi-night stands have become a tradition over the past 20 years -- will also be big news because the group had to cancel a 15-show stint in May while Allman was treated for long-festering hepatitis C.
"I've never done that," the singer and keyboardist said of the cancellation, "and had it not been a total emergency, I wouldn't have done it this time. But I just flat couldn't make it, man. They make you take this (medication), you might as well plan on staying home for half a year.
"It's hell, man. It's really hell, but it worked. I don't have all my strength back yet, but I'm getting totally back up on my feet again. And the shows have been wonderful."
The Allmans are on a stretch of late-summer shows that wraps October 11 in Atlanta. The group, whose last studio album was 2003's "Hittin' the Note," is playing a couple of new songs, and guitarist Warren Haynes said there's "probably about half an album done" and ready to record.
"We haven't been able to think about much lately except getting through this year," Allman noted, "but, yeah, next year will be really nice to get into the studio. We're looking forward to that."

Answer:
Once I chatted with someone who was at the Filmore East venue on Second Avenue in Manhattan to see the Allman Brothers early in their career, probably 40 years ago. In the late 60s, most rockers like the Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin played the small venue, about 3000 seats at the Filmore East.

Should letters be stopped from being printed by an editor? Question: I was sent this letter and wanted to hear people’s views on it, should letters like this be printed in local papers, or should they be stopped from being printed?

And here we are in 2006 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the
same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing
with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement
card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm
sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe
that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's
deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice
in raising future generations to create a land that has become a
beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they
would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those
waving foreign country flags.
And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it
happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the
immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the
United States just yet.
P. S. Pass this on to everyone you know!!! KEEP THIS LETTER MOVING!!
I hope this letter gets read by millions of people all across the
nation!!
Answer:
I have a degree in journalism and I can tell you this happens all the time. Newspapers gets tons of letters. They can't possibly print them all, so they do have to make decisions on what to cut.
Legally, they are also responsible for whatever gets printed in their pages. (Even if one of their staff members did not write something, they can still get sued for it.) So they have to evaluate things written by the public for content. (They do the same for advertising.)
And, you're right. Some also select letters to support their own editorial positions. (I'm not sure it's ethical to leave out the opposition's viewpoint if you're trying to have a balanced telling of the news, however.)
The fact is, the First Amendment guarantees that the GOVERNMENT can't try and censor your speech - and newspapers are private institutions. They CAN dictate what to leave out.
