City Description

Altamont is a village located in the Town of Guilderland in Albany County, New York. The population was 1,737 at the 2000 census. The name means "high mountain." The Village of Altamont is in the western part of the town. (NOTE: The former Town of Altamont in Franklin County, New York is now know as the Town of Tupper Lake ) The village was formerly called Knowersville. A village fair has been held annually in the local fairgrounds since 1893. Altamont is located at 42°42′19″N 74°2′1″W / 42.70528, -74.03361 (42.705326, -74.033487). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²), all of it land. However, there are two major streams that run through the town center. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,737 people, 646 households, and 474 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,451.5 people per square mile (558.9/km²). There were 674 housing units at an average density of 563.2/sq mi (216.9/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.64% White, 1.09% African American, 0.12% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races.
