City DescriptionAlbany is the capital of the State of New York and the county seat of Albany County. Albany is 136 miles (219 km) north of New York City, and slightly to the south of the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. The city sits on the Hudson River and has a major port. The Hudson River has been deepened so that ocean going ships can reach the city. The city has a population of 94,172 (July 2007 est.).
Albany has close ties with the nearby cities of Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs, forming a region called the Capital District. This area makes up the bulk of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) with a population of 850,957, making it the fourth largest urban area in New York State, and the 56th largest MSA in the United States.
Albany is built on the site of the Dutch Fort Orange and its surrounding community of Beverwyck. The English acquired the site from the Dutch in 1664 and renamed it Albany, in honor of James II, Duke of Albany. A 1686 document issued by Thomas Dongan granted Albany its official charter. This date makes Albany the second oldest city in the state in terms of its date of incorporation, after New Amsterdam.

What is there to do in Albany New York? Question: I am planning a trip to New York for my boyfriend. He is from a city right outside Albany. What is there to do there in August. Anything that I just have to check out?? Also can anyone give me info about going to see a Yankee game? Thanks for all your help!!
Answer:
A trip to Albany, you must really hate your bf. LOL! just playing with you!
OK, there is really not much to do in Albany, Albany is mostly just boring 30 year old state/federal buildings. Albany is very dull, just like most american capital cities and most upstate cities. Just about everyone who goes to albany is from downstate, NY.
Maybe there are some malls.

How can I ship a car by rail from Las vegas to Albany, New York? Question: I plan on relocation from Las Vegas, Nevada to Albany, New York
Answer:
Rail is typically not the way to go. You should consider a vehicle transport that will ship the vehicle, in most cases, by truck. Some will use rail for very specific routes, but no often.
The best way to find a company is to do one or more of the following:
1. View ratings, reviews and shipping costs for transporting vehicle at: http://www.transportreviews.com/ There are over 5,000 ratings and reviews from past customers. There is also a tool to give you the costs you should expect to pay. For example right now it shows that two others have moved from NV to NY and the average cost was $1,100 (which seems high). So you might want to try...
2. Fill out a form online and get multiple quotes from a site like http://www.autotransporter.com/ This site only gets quotes from companies that are well rated on Transport Reviews.
I hope that is helpful.

Can anyone give me a good summary of the real estate market in Albany, New York? Question: The NY goverment is in talks about a high speed train line that would connect Albany and possibly some other upstate areas to NYC. I think this would be a major boost for Albany and the real estate market up there. I have been to Albany a few times and honestly I was not very impressed. It seemed like a place in a serious rut. I am curious about the upside potential of Albany in terms of real estate. I want to hear from someone who knows the area a little better. I would appreciate some real insight on the current real estate market, and which areas would benefit the most from a the high speed train. I'm also curious as to which neighborhoods currently in Albany are considered the best to live in and which are considered the worst. Thanks a bunch.
Answer:
I'm sorry but I can't. I would just caution you not to act until the talks about the train are more serious or close to passing... Until then, I would do as you are... study that market and get to know it real well. Then if it passes you'll be ready to take advantage of the change...
Good luck,
Joe Ballarino

Whats the weather like in Albany, New York? Where can i get good thermal wears to fit that weather? Question: im moving to albany in may and im not sure what the weather is like, what type of clothings are appropraite for the weather?
Answer:
I used to live near Albany. I don't know what you're used to. In May, the weather is usually warming up, although it can still be kind of cool or rainy. I would say high temperatures anywhere from the low 50s to low 70s. I would get a wind breaker (maybe with a fleece liner for chilly evenings) and maybe a rain coat. You can always just order things like that from LL Bean, but the nearest outlets for shopping are in Lake George (one hour north) or Lee, MA (one hour east off of I-90, (MA has no clothing tax, NY does). The biggest mall in Albany is Crossgates, but also check out Colonie Center.
Good Luck!

What's it like living in Albany, New York? Question: I'm thinking about going to the University of Albany, State of New York.
Answer:
I go to the school now and the most important thing I can impress upon you is this...it's cold. Very cold. If you don't like to be cold do not come to school here. But other than that it's great! Downtown Albany has a lot of cool things to do, particularly restaurants to eat at, the school is gigantic so there's always something to do, clubs to join, teams to be on, parties to go to, causes to get involved in. It's a really diverse campus and a diverse city, there's something for everyone. Also in a lot of ways Albany is sort of a college town, there's a lot of non-college town/more refined areas of Albany but there's also a lot of sleezy dive bars and seedy neighborhoods, you just have to scout it out and see what's good for you! Also it's really easy to get everywhere because the bus transportation is free for SUNY students! So you can get anywhere downtown or to any of the malls, or anywhere in the Capital district for free really.

Does anyone know if there is any free mamogram clinics in the Albany new york area.? Question: With breast awareness month coming up I feel it is important to get examined. But without health insurance it is expensive. So if anyone has any info it would be appreciated.
Answer:
To locate a FDA certified, accredited mammography facility in your area, call the National Cancer Institute at 1-800-4-CANCER. If you do not have health insurance, you have a number of options:
****Call your local chapter of the American Cancer Society (number in your phone book) or the national toll-free number, 1-800-ACS-2345. The ACS will be able to tell you about any low-cost or free mammography programs offering screening to women unable to pay for it themselves.
****Call your State Department of Health (number in your phone book). Every state now has a Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program funded by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This program offers screening to qualifying women unable to pay for it themselves.
****Call the YWCA's ENCOREplus Program for access to low-cost or free mammograms. To find which YWCA facilities offer this service and if you are eligible, call 1-800-95EPLUS or your local YWCA.
****Call the National Cancer Institute at 1-800-4-CANCER for the names of FDA-certified, accredited mammography facilities in your area. If you explain your financial situation, some mammography facilities are willing to work out a lower fee or payment schedule that will make the test more affordable. Ask the facility if they are willing to discuss these options with you.
****October of each year is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and many mammography facilities offer special fees and extended hours during this month. If you are unable to schedule a mammogram another time of year, you may wish to call in September to reserve an appointment.
