anyone out there ever been to Philmont Scout resrvation in Cimarron, new mexico?
    Question:
i'm getting to go with my scout troop this year, and was wondering if anyone has any tips, or suggestions... i'll give 10 points to a good tip!

    Answer:
my son is there now.......pack as light as possible, but; 1. Take bottles to carry plenty of water, you are at altitude and it is dry and you must stay hydrated. 2. Rain suit, not just poncho, violent thunderstorms are not uncommon. 3. Water filter, they will give you disinfectant tablets but you will still want to filter the water for "chunks". 4. Sunscreen, bug juice. 5. Layers - it can be 90 in the day and 30 at night. 6. Your troop should have plenty of guidelines available. You also should have gotten the field manual. READ IT AND FOLLOW IT. This is not kid's stuff...you are in the outback for a week or more.

Best Hiking Boots for Philmont, New Mexico?
    Question:
I'm going on a Philmont Trek w/ my Boy Scout troop this summer. Our trek is about 75 miles in Cimarron, NM. What are the best hiking boots for their price and why?

    Answer:
If you plan on hitting Baldy or the Tooth you WILL want a sturdy pair of boots. I agree with honorunit go to an outdoor retailer, not academy or walmart et al. Have the boots fitted with wool liner socks and wool outer socks on. Put both boots on and walk the store a bit. If they have a mock hill walk up and down it feeling of the toes. Look for something gore-tex lined or leather that you can snoseal, also consider some gaiters One of the worst parts of my trek was my pants and boots caked in mud from sawmill canyon. Lastly make sure they are well broken in before you leave, and make sure you carry moleskin on the trail. You might also consider a DVD called preparing for Philmont on the tooth of time traders website Best of luck and after this summer you will truly understand the statement "I made it"
