Schell City is located at 38°1′9″N 94°6′60″W / 38.01917, -94.11667 (38.019168, -94.116617).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), all of it land.
On Main St. important building include Farmers State Bank, the Schell City Cafe, T&T repair, Haddix Grocery, City Hall, J&S repair, and Madilins Kitchen. The NEVC elementary school is on 2nd & Hickory in Schell City. River Road Discount Convenience store is located on River Road.
As of the census of 2000, there were 286 people, 128 households, and 84 families residing in the city. The population density was 454.3 people per square mile (175.3/km²). There were 161 housing units at an average density of 255.7/sq mi (98.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 100.00% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.05% of the population.
