Nelson is located at 38°59′43″N 93°1′55″W / 38.99528, -93.03194 (38.995330, -93.031928).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.9 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 212 people, 83 households, and 58 families residing in the city. The population density was 640.5 people per square mile (248.0/km²). There were 100 housing units at an average density of 302.1/sq mi (117.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.40% White, 6.13% African American, and 0.47% from two or more races.
There were 83 households out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 16.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 2.95.
