I might be moving to either Tuscaloosa or Birmingham Alabama, which is the best place to live?
    Question:
I am single working woman with eldery parents whom live with me. I was curious to what area in and around Tuscaloosa/Birmingham would be a good place to live. How is the climate in both? We currently live in Mid Missouri. Brrrrrrrr.

    Answer:
I recommend one of the municipalities outside of the Birmingham city limits -- Vestavia Hills, Hoover, Mountain Brook to the south or Gardendale, Fultondale, Mount Olive to the north -- stay away from the downtown area of the city -- it's not the safest place to be or live, and there is NO place to shop. I live in Hoover, which is about 10 miles south of downtown, and I work downtown. I've never even been to Tuscaloosa even though I've lived here now for 18 years. I do know it's a college town. The University of Alabama is there. The climate is typical southeastern US -- it's HOT in the summer, and just right in the spring, fall and winter. I was born in Birmingham, grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, and moved back to Birmingham in 1990.

Can we visit a church of Scientology?
    Question:
Our house closes in 4 days and we want to travel from Birmingham, Alabama to St. Louis, Missouri. We are considering moving to St. Louis. We researched religions/churches, property taxes, homeschooling laws (we've homeschooled our 4 sons for 15 years now), and climate, and we came up with St. Louis. My husband was offered a transfer through his company if he wanted Chicago, but the taxes were too high there. We did drive up there to visit and it is a wonderful place. If we show up in St. Louis this coming weekend, can we go to a Sunday service? St. Louis also has a CCHR chapter. Do they have meetings or is it mostly an online group? We really want to support any group that is against labeling and drugging children. We want to relocate so that we can get involved. Thanks for your help

    Any advice on picking colleges?
    Question:
Here's a list of colleges that have emailed/mailed me (all end with university or college): Austin, Baylor, Birmingham-Southern, Boston, Brown, Case Western Reserve, Centenary, Christian Bros., CO School of Mines, Colgate, Columbia, Fordham, Illinois Wesleyan, Kettering, New York, Rhodes, Rice, Southern Methodist, Texas Christian, Chicago, Trinity, Tulane, Missouri-Rolla, Miami, Rochester, Washington and Lee, and (finally) Washington in St. Louis. I'm a sophmore, from Louisiana, and I have an interest in engineering (either mechanical, automotive, or test). Anyone have any advice with a major in engineering? Advice from people who CURRENTLY major in engineering would be a huge help.

    Answer:
One thing you will definitely want to consider is how set you really are on engineering. Some schools, especially technical schools may be the best for your interest in engineering, but if you try it and decide against it, there aren't many other strong programs at the school. If you are set on it, obviously you will want to enter the top programs, top engineering schools like MIT or CalTech, which are very selective. It's up to you how focused or broad you want your academic experience to be. As far as doing a college search, collegeboard.com has a search feature in which you enter criteria such as cost, distance, program of choice, extracurriculars, etc. and it will give you good matches for what you want.

    Answer:
For Comp Sci look at Texas at Austin, Georgia Tech and Virginaia Tech if you can get in to those. Texas at Austin is a good one because of so many employers in the area. Although Id guess these are harder. Other than those, you may found those in southern states are easier to get into. Also you may want to look into ones that have programs in hot fields like gaming, virtual worlds and genetics/bioinformatics.
