How important is fertilizer when seeding yard? Question: I just put out some grass seed to fill in some bare patches and overseed the rest. The seed package says I should fertilize the fresh seed. How important is this? I'm trying to keep project costs down, but I don't want to be so stingy on fertilizer that I waste the grass seed by not feeding it properly. It's fescue, and I'm in Missouri if that's relevant.
Answer:
As "d2" stated, you should wait a few weeks until it gets established. You don't want excessive top growth in the early stages. The roots are the main concern at this juncture. The energy needs to be in developing a good root base. There is enough natural nutrients in the existing soil to take care of the germination process and get the new grass started. Hope this answers your question...

What is best to do for trees that had large limbs torn off during recent ice storm? Question: I need to know if there is anything I can put on them to save from bugs eating at the bare wood. Should we trim the limbs to make them even before applying anything? I've heard of applying tar to the scars to prevent insects entering. This information will be useful to many people in Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas.
Answer:
IN MOST CASES, THE PREFERED PLACE TO MAKE A PRUNING CUT IS BACK TO THE PARENT BRANCH OR TRUNK, JUST TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE BRANCH COLLAR OR SHOULDER. DO NOT MAKE ANY FLUSH CUTS. INSIDE THE BRANCH COLLAR THERE IS ENERGY STORED THIS AREA IS CALLED THE BRANCH PROTECTION ZONE THAT ALLOWS FOR COMPARTMENTALIZATION OF THE WOUND.. RESEARCH HAS NOT SHOWN WOUND DRESSINGS TO ACCELERATE WOUND CLOSURE AND TO REDUCE DECAY. SOME STUDIES HAVE SHOWN BENEFICIAL EFFECTS IN SPECIFIC CASES IN REDUCING BORER ATTACK, OAK WILT INFECTION, OR CONTROL OF SPROUT PRODUCTION OR MISTLETOE. WOUND DRESSINGS ARE USED PRIMARILY FOR COSMETIC PURPOSES.

I saw a small mammal in NE Missouri yesterday. Front 1/2 was red & the back 1/2 was dark. What is it? Question: I saw it very closely - from 3 feet for 5 seconds in an isolated patch of tall grass.
I was clearing it of summer stuff & I'd lifted something out. It was standing in a bare spot where what I removed had prevented the grass from growing.
The dogs were standing nearby, but before I could get them tracking on it, I looked back down and it was gone.
I didn't have a camera on me & I'd left my gun at the last spot, so that's best desciption I can give.
The front 1/2 of (the part with the head), was red and the back was black or very dark brown.
The body shape was almost cylindrical except for the head and tail (both medium). I'd say it was 2" in diameter and 6" in length (excluding tail).
I've lived here 7 years and, also 45 miles away for 24 years (starting @ age 0), and I've never seen anything like it before.
This is a argricultural & hunting area with crops, ponds, pasture, woods, & small river. I was the only resident around yesterday within about 300 acres.
Vole - I thought of because I'd never seen one...
I thought shrews were itty bitty things?
But, I've never really seen one except in "ATTACK OF THE KILLER SHREWS" narrated by the MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000) and those looked like dogs with rags on them.
Do weasels look like ferrets?
This was smaller than a guinea pig but bigger than a hampster.
It looked like a cambells soup can
(the condensed kind - not your ready to eat)
with a face sticking out of one end (not the end I was closest to either).and a tail a couple of inches long.
Answer:
Sounds like a weasel, maybe a short-tailed. Weasels have cylindrical bodies, and voles/gophers are stumpier. Here are a couple photos but googling weasel images should give you much more.

Are There Any Wiccan book/Supply stores in the Jefferson city/Columbia Missouri area? Question: I'm kinda new to this, so bare with me. Does anyone know any good placed within a halfhour to 45 minute drive of Jefferson City area that would be a good place to go for books and/or Supplies, besides Barns and noble and ect.? Thnx
Please help out, and if your going to just bag on me or my religous choices don't jump to conclusions you might fall flat on your face, and you'd be surprised what I've been and done so take it elsewhere if your not gonna help me out.
Answer:
I live in a place where there aren't many stores that have to do with Wicca....Most of the stuff that I get are candles picked up from Wal-Mart or articles on the Internet....Spells come from Pagan friends that I have or trusted web sites.
In your situation, like mine, I would try going on the Internet and using stores from there. Here are a couple of websites that might have what you are looking for:
wiccanglade.com
proudtobepagan.com
pagan-magic.co.uk

Okay, I'm being serious for once, What's a good church for my Mom to try? Question: She's been Trinity Lutheran Missouri Synod her whole life, but all those churches in our area contain large amounts of hypocrites--she doesn't have a social life, and I'm TRYING to talk her into church shopping, because she used to like the involvement--Any suggestions?
I promise to keep the serious questions to a bare minimum
Answer:
Assembly of God is great for both spirituality and a social life, as they have lots of small groups that meet weekly outside of church. They're very upbeat and welcoming too.

Should there be Privitization of the Public School system in the U.S.? Question: Our public schools are barely making the grade themselfs. Between the Goverments inputs and laws as wel as each states laws or concerns, there is either no-money or no-way to adequetly give students the edjucation they despretly need. Other countries have there 16 year old at college level Reading & Math. Why, are we not making it more possible to allow a school to become a company? The lottery says they give to the schools but sadly its a bare obscure amont that certain school districts actually see. Plus, Teacher's would be better sought after and paid for there own exspireince as well as there own edjucation. Here in Missouri I feel the schools are in despret need of an over haul.Thank you for your time and comments.
Answer:
While I agree with you in theory it hasn't worked so far. Most of the independant schools have already been shut down. How about paying our teachers what they're worth (they have a bachelor's degree & have to go for the master's to achieve tenure in most states if not all) and give them the resources they need. Kids can't bring books home to study, because they only have one set for each room (and a lot of these are out-dated. Teachers are buying basic classroom supplies out of their own pockets. Let's fix what we have. Instead of sending money to Iraq, let's keep it here & fix our own problems.

Emperess Tree? Question: I planted one of those Emperess trees a little over 2 yrs ago. It WAS growing like a weed lol (went from sapling to 15 ft tall) I was looking forward to this year as I heard they bloom in their 3rd year. I live in Missouri, and we had a very warm spell this spring, then like everyone else had that COLD snap that lasted a few weeks. The tree had already put out several leaves which all wilted & died within a few days. After it warmed up again the tree sprouted a few itty bitty leaves here & there (not normal for this tree with it's huge leaves) but recently these too fell off & now the tree is bare but like all good Emperess trees is sending up shoots at the bottom. So I know cutting it down restarts the fast growth but I REALLY hate to do that. Is there any way this tree might possibly come back next year maybe? Or is it a lost cause & just cut down & start over? Thanks :)
Answer:
I had the same thing happen here in Indiana to my redbud tree :( It was sprouting buds and then the cold snap hit and forget it.....big time dead. If you do have sprouts at the bottom, then definitely cut out/prune the dead parts to the tree. That'll make it perk back up and stop wasting its energy on the dead parts of the tree. Good luck!
