If you like undercooked meat, wobbly tables and a plate of ketchup packets then head on down quickly to Take Down Bar and Grill before the "restaurant" closes for good. The building space is decent, a great opportunity for a fantastic restaurant. Years ago, it was Frick's. A great restaurant and since then, the building has been aching for a successful restaurant. Earlier this year, that space was occupied by Acropolis, a Greek restaurant, where the atmosphere had a little left to be desired but the food was decent. Months later, the abandoned building was lit up once again. "Take Down" is almost an intimidating name for a bar and grill, but the parking lot showed that a few were willing to take the challenge. As my boyfriend, Matt, and I enter the building, we immediately notice that everything still looks the same--the same maroon, library-ish carpeting, exact same booths (same upholstery and everything) and wall paint from Acropolis. We also notice it is busier than we thought it would be so we snag one of only a few open booths. The booth is wobbly; in fact, it rocks; similar to the Titanic right before it went down. There is another open booth available. We sit down, I check its stability. Success! We can eat. We order our drinks from the waitress who seems happy to be there as she flashes her midriff in the "Take Down" spaghetti strap tank with blue jeans "uniform." The soda we ordered comes quickly, and it is not the best Pepsi in the world but it is not the worst. We both order burgers, I go with the half-pound cheeseburger and Matt gets the Bacon Cheeseburger. My thinking is I am at a bar and grill where burgers are many times a specialty, or at the least, a safe bet. We both want fries but are quickly notified by the waitress that they are out of fries and the "boss is out to get more." (At the Target across the street?) So we both get the pub-style potato chips. The menu is that of a typical bar and grill: burgers, wraps, appetizers of fried foods galore and salads. We order. As usual I say "no tomato" with my order, the waitress says the burger toppings come on the side so I can feel free to "shun" (her word, not mine!) the tomato. First of all, I am not a huge fan of wasting food, so save the tomato and give the borderline fruit to someone who wants it. Secondly, my impression is that when I'm at a restaurant, the "waitress" is supposed to "wait" on me and not alter my order. Twenty-five long minutes later, our food arrives. When asked the typical, "Can I get you anything else?" by the waitress, we notice that this must be the only bar and grill in town without a bottle of ketchup on the table. We ask for ketchup and five minutes later we are presented with a plate of ketchup packets "You have got to be kidding me," is the first thought through my mind. Yet again, the waitress has an excuse for the sub-par service, "Our ketchup delivery did not come in today." "Um, ok..." Matt utters. I "shun" the individually wrapped ketchup and bite into my Medium-cooked (or at least, medium-ordered) cheeseburger, sans tomato. It is medium-well, and midway through, it pasts medium-rare. I give up when my burger is about to bleed. I will give Take Down this, though: the pub-style chips are more than decent. We eat every last morsel and then ask for our check. The total price did not blow me away, but I was tempted to argue down my price for my far, far (far, far, far) less than satisfactory meal, although, my desire to just get out of there was stronger than my desire to save a buck. In the end, my vote is for taking down Take Down.
