City Description

Aurora is a city in Lawrence County, Missouri, United States. The population was 7,014 at the 2000 census. Aurora is located at 36°58′12″N 93°43′14″W / 36.97, -93.72056 (36.969956, -93.720574). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.5 square miles (14.2 km²), of which, 5.5 square miles (14.2 km²) of it is land and 0.18% is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 7,020 people, 2,818 households, and 1,865 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,278.7 people per square mile (493.3/km²). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 563.9/sq mi (217.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.68% White, 0.26% African American, 0.83% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 1.34% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.71% of the population. There were 2,818 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% were non-families. 29.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age
