City Description

Smithville is a town in Monroe County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 882 at the 2000 census. Smithville was the birthplace of Rod Brasfield, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Smithville is located at 34°4′7″N 88°23′44″W / 34.06861, -88.39556 (34.068605, -88.395486). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km²), of which, 1.5 square miles (3.8 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (8.12%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 882 people, 365 households, and 243 families residing in the town. The population density was 602.1 people per square mile (233.2/km²). There were 404 housing units at an average density of 275.8/sq mi (106.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.62% White, 1.59% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.23% from other races, and 0.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.79% of the population. There were 365 households out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.9% were married couples living together, 14.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% were
